Going back to the Leica 50/1.4 Lux BC..how many "500" special edition runs we are going to have?
I feel bad for the first 500 buyers who thought production would end soon. Not, it's even in Portugal!

Yeah, Leica completely changed their mind on that one. It is only limited to how many people buy one before it's discontinued one day

The 50 Lux BC arrived today.

I tested for optical vignetting and don't see any issue when compared to the 50/1.4 Lux. I was worried that the 43mm vs 46mm thread would cause higher vignetting for the BC.

The worse optical vignetting is always at infinity. So I set both lenses to infinity distance,

I have machined a B+W polarizing filter to make it fit on the 28mm Summilux ASPH with the hood (i.e. below the hood). Be careful with any metal dust that may settle on the filter or even on the lens if you keep it nearby.

I don't know whether that would work with this particular problem, though.

After playing with the 50/1.4 Lux BC and regular 50/1.4 Lux today, I decided that I prefer using the latter.
The BC version is absolutely beautiful but I think the tab is still useful on the regular version which gives the choice of using ring or tab. The hood situation is also an issue for me.
Perhaps if I had a black-chrome M body instead of silver, I would be more tempted to keep the BC.

Both are identical optically so it's really about looks and haptics.

I find it really awkward on my 28 Lux to move from the tab and find the narrow focusing ring by feel. I wish the focusing rings on the tabbed lenses were wider. No reason we couldn't have the scalloped ring design combined with the tab as well Ė not sure if that would be some kind of lens design abomination, though.

So far I'm so happy with the CV 50 APO, I don't think I will re-buy a 50 Lux until they update it with a shorter MFD as has been rumored.

Really glad to hear there's no vignetting difference on the BC

The Leica 50 APO has a tab which I do find useful plus a twist and lock hood but for me the BC 50 Lux is too beautiful to replace with the regular version.

I just bought a new 50/1.4 BC and thought the filter + lens hood issue was resolved but it was false alarm. ;-)

If I send it to Leica for their "workaround" solution, it seems they will add threads to the upper section of the hood so it attaches directly to the filter.

Question though: I've heard they would send back the hood in two pieces. Would it be possible to re-attach the pieces to each other in order to bring back original hood design if desired?

Yes, it can be put back to the original condition, so save the original bottom half that they send back with the new top.

Here's what I understand that they do:

1. Disassemble the original hood into its two parts
2. Add a thread ring to the bottom of the top half
3. You get back the new top half that screws into the filter along with the original bottom half

Keep two things in mind: an impact to the hood will now put leverage on the lens threads instead of the outside groove of the lens barrel end, and you will loose the cool engraving on the bottom half of the hood that is removed. The whole contraption ends up looking a little odd in my opinion from a design perspective.

I agree with your two points.

However, it seems that it's a non-brainer to send the hood to Leica for modification. Like that it can be used with the lens + filter and also could be put together for when not using filters (or to retain the original look/value).

Thanks for confirming the two parts can be put together making the hood whole again.

I think it has to go back to Leica to be put back to its original state, though. Just making sure I didnít make it sound like the modification made it interchangeable by the user.

You could still have the modification done and buy an extra unmodified hood

I will ask Leica to send me just the top of the modified hood without having to send my original one. It's worth a try. If it does not happen, I will just use the lens without the hood when using filters.

That makes sense. With mine, I put the hood back in the box and never used it. I loved using the retro metal lens cap instead, which was very satisfying to use due to the brass weight and felt lining. The lens cap still works great with filters.

I will post an update when I hear back from them. Yes, love that brass cap!

I have received an update from Leica. They will ship me a modified Leica hood for the 50/1.4 Lux black-chrome. This hood will have threads to attach direction to the lens or a filter. It will only ship in November though as they are low in parts.

After I owned my first 50 BC, I purchased (too) many different 43mm filters trying to find one that would fit the BC with the hood in its original configuration. In the end, I ended up using a filter from Japan that only "kind of" fit.

In July of this year, I bought my current 50 BC and recalled seeing a review on B&H that referred to a filter that the reviewer said would allow use of the hood. The reviewer states, in pertinent part:

"This lens is brand new, high performance and compact and very nice. I recommend this UN filter https://www.un-satellite.jp/html/products/detail.php?product_id=308. The genuine hood can be used with SCHOTTs glass protection filter 43 mm.

UNX-9622(43mm): JAN CODE:4907822096227"

The website, however, is in Japanese and Google translate wouldn't work with the drop down lists in the checkout portion of the site. Ultimately, I was able to message their corporate headquarters and I received a very cordial e-mail explaining the website only allows for shipments within Japan. It was offered that I could send them a PayPal payment and they sent me the filter. I did so and finally own a filter that fits with the lens hood intact (FWIW, the filter has to be both thin enough in diameter and not too tall to fit within the space allotted within the hood).

Once again, the model that fits is "UNX-9622 43mm filter".

If you're interested, you can send an email to:

Shinji Sano
Managing Director
U.N Company Ltd.

Shinji's e-mail address is: [email protected] with the subject line: UNX-9622 43mm filter

Hope this helps.

@palexy, thank you so much for this information. I have ordered the UNX-9622 43mm filter and received it today. It works perfectly with the Leica 50mm f/1.4 Summilux Black Chrome + original hood. The hood fits firmly just as if there is no filter attached.

This filter is made in Japan, well made and super thin...so thin that it looks like the lens has no filter attached. Seems to be very high quality as well. (SCHOTT glass). Highly recommended!

Update: The filter UN UNX-9622 for the Summilux 50 Black Chrome can also be purchased using the service "Buyee". They will ship it to the USA. Here is the link:
https://buyee.jp/item/yahoo/auction/n1064286385

It's a high quality UV filter that allows the Leica 50/1.4 Summilux Black Chrome original hood to be attached without any problems. It's also super thin at ~1mm thickness!

Here are some images showing the filter on the lens:
