Been a long wait for my 800PF and the wait was well worth it. Here are a few shots spent with a pair of Hooded Mergansers. Not been much to shoot lately so I am still looking for some really good opportunities.

Here is a Northern Pintail set, the in-flight ones were on a pretty overcast day. This 800mm with the compression far out punches it's weight class for an f6.3 aperture in regards to the bokeh/OOF backgrounds and in my opinion handles the backlit spectral highlights much better then the 500PF does.

Not that you guys can tell that I am already in love with this 800PF. This will be my last post for a bit lol. Just a few random shots of some Northern Shovelers, Marsh Hawk and a Mallard

This set is fantastic... congratulations. The 800PF is a special lens. We Nikon shooters are fortunate that Nikon set the price where they did. While not inexpensive, it is not the $12000 plus that the 5.6 commands!

This is why I wanted the 800PF. While I enjoy photographing birds, I love wildlife landscapes.
I've seen a coyote in this area about once a month. Every time I've seen, it's gone quicker than my ability to grab a lens and shoot. On Sunday I caught a glimpse of it on a hill and it began to retreat. I grabbed the 800PF and ran parallel to the woods, and it appeared once again.
In my haste I forgot to activate VR (had just been shooting from a tripod w/ VR off). Fortunately, 20fps saved me, and I managed to nail a few in focus shots...
Both images were taken in DX mode... so 1200mm field of view @ 1/1250 second w/out VR!
Incredible tool for Nikon wildlife shooters!

Hey, thanks! Appreciate it.
OMG yes! the F mount 800 f5.6 is $17k brand new. This is the top end that I would pay for a lens unless I was making a living on wildlife photography. As it is I am make enough to cover some trips here and there but not the gear yet.
And we are spoiled! I know A LOT of Canon and Sony shooters seriously thinking of jumping to or back to Nikon because of the 400f2.8 TC, 600f4 TC and the 800PF lenses

Good news - my store just notified me they'll be receiving the lens tomorrow (1st one since August). I should be getting it next week.
Could you share when you placed your order? Mine was placed mid-day on the first day of ordering, but at one of the larger shops. Not NPS. I fear I still have a bit of a wait...

Camera Canada. I'm non NPS but I moved to the top of preorder list in August (order placed even before the lens was officially announced). The situation in Canada is different though - while US was getting a steady trickle of lenses in the recent months, Canada got ZERO lenses since that minor delivery in August.

A few heavy crops with the 800PF lens just to put it though some difficult scenarios. Not that I would look to do this on the regular but just trying to see the full resolving power on the Z9
This in DX crop then 80% crop on export.

The kingfisher looks great. The falcon - a bit of heat haze?

Hi Eric
Glad to see you're having fun with your new 800.
No critique..... just a request here.... and to everyone out there .......
It would be interesting to see ya'll include the original images (right out of the camera) with the crops.
Thanks Eric
Robert
I have 2 already exported before the crop but the kingfisher I will have to get to after work. These were shot in the DX crop so 19.2mp before copping on export

I've found that the lens is sharp with or without the 1.4x TC. Atmospheric conditions are the biggest negative for using this lens, especially shooting from a car in cold temperatures. Heat shimmer is a problem, so I won't use the 1.4x unless I am certain the conditions are good. It took over a year for me to get it, but it's a great lens and I can't wait for spring bird migration.

The more I see and learn about this lens, the more I see it as a likelihood for me.
I like shooting "out in it" in the winter. Part of this is for the solitude and then there is studying how nature is surviving in the cold. Nature is fascinating. It's much more interesting than anything man's got going on.
This lens will be tack sharp, even with the 1.4TC, if it has been out in the cold long enough for the entire unit to be as cold as the outside.

It is certainly worth it. I can hand hold with the Z9+800PF down to 1/2 second, that's half a second with the full VR, not sport and I can shoot 4k 120p in 2.3x crop for 1200mm FOV, hand held pretty well which is insane. Not to mention it's crazy sharp.
