Question - how do you guys carry this lens when it's out of the pack in the field? Strap or just grab it by the foot? Sorry if it was already asked/answered in the 33 pages here.

I use a shoulder strap but sometimes will just carry by the foot. I also keep a monopod clipped to a Molle belt and will use that if doing video. But I would say I split time with a strap or just carry it by the foot.

I went out to shoot the rather elusive tiny Pin Tailed Parrotfinch yesterday so I had my 800PF/Z9 set up on a tripod waiting. Suddenly a Great Hornbill showed up behind close enough that some people just used their phone
I grabbed my 800PF off the tripod and backed off as much as I could.
Parrotfinch picture was cropped down to just over 10mp. No cropping needed for the great hornbill

Hate straps... always carry by foot or on a tripod.
IMHO... lens performs best from a tripod.
I stopped shooting with a tripod years ago. I only started using one again define the fall if I'm doing some video. To restricted with a tripod and with things not happening on a schedule with wildlife i need maximum agility.
It's whatever works for you best is all that matters though

@Eric214 & @suteetat - what straps are you guys using for a z9+800PF combo. I have a kirk qd plate on the body and use a luma labs qd strap with smaller lenses. I had trouble balancing it with Z9 on a 400 4.5 with kirk foot (qd)... so for that setup I use peak design with anchors. Just trying to figure out my options when the lens arrives next week.

Just the Nikon strap that came with the lens. It is small and light enough not to bother me when I have the lens on tripod. Really good balance for walking longish distance.

Ricci Sharpness Dilemma!
Despite Ricci statement that he is shooting a per-production unit.
He is shooting a side bu side test which usually should have the same camera parameters and yet the Shutter Speed is different for each lens as you can see from the screen grab.

There is no discrepancy. f/1.2 1/20s iso 64 is equivalent to f/1.8 1/7s iso 64 and the second pic is taken at 1/8s which is why it is a bit darker. In manual mode one cannot normally set 1/7s.
Comparing both lenses wide open gives an indication of how well the lenses hold up in that kind of usage. Another pair of comparison pics is typically taken at equal apertures which is also valid and a sensible thing to compare but many people expect shoot both lenses wide open in practical use, so the presented comparison is reasonable. No one wants to pay 3499€ for an 85mm prime only to shoot it at f/1.8 and no wider.

More images from the frigid mid-continental north where animals are often pushed to the limits...
This is the same coyote I photographed last week, and the eagle is one of two that I have photographed on a nest... I love discovering patterned behaviors, as it allows me to learn the rhythms of my subjects and increase the chance of producing unique work... hoping to see the coyote again!
Handheld and DX crops... Topaz was used to reduce the noise.

bruce

Just received my 800 f6.3 PF and hoping to get out and give it a test run today. 😁
Looking forward to what you can do with it when you have it for more than a couple days, Lance. Mine is hopefully showing up tomorrow. Lots of rain in the immediate forecast here though.
