Congratulations to sboerup for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 10 votes - View Previous Winners

It's been quite a while since I've posted here mostly because I haven't been shooting much. I shoot some family snaps here and there but nothing I would say I'm intentionally "crafting" as a portrait.

A family I worked with 10 years ago for their first daughters high school graduate portraits reached out to me because they really wanted to work with me again. I got to play with some new MagMod toys to boot so that made it even more fun.

I've always strived for OCF that blended into the scene, with just a touch of light to brighten up and shape the face naturally. Of course this model was super photogenic, but I strived for a natural elegance with this portrait. Always open to critique!

Well done! Only thing I would add is not cropping her feet out of the photos. Especially if she just had them done. Thanks for sharing.

Good set of images. I really like your creative use of lighting in the second shot.

For some critique I would have to point out that the highlights are way too hot for my liking in the first shot. As well, in both the first and last shots the highlights on her skin are looking a bit too far on the magenta side of things and I might suggest making some white balance adjustments to correct or reduce that. Otherwise good work.

The second image is wonderful for the manner in which you have exploited the light.

A very engaging, beautiful, shapely young woman! I agree about #2! She takes a beautiful picture!
Well done!

She has the smile of smiles Just a natural beauty and you treated her well. Very welcoming look to her.

Your images look very casual in poses and she stands out. Some things mentioned about feet I agree with. I would like to see the last with the perspective straightened as to me it feels she is falling forward and that makes the image a little 'unrelaxed' for me?

Glad you had them request you, that is always a nice compliment

Appreciate the thoughts regarding cropping, just personal taste to have it slightly closer to me. Sometimes full body looks too "static" to me.

It was mine and her favorite of the bunch!

Ya, can't say it was a difficult subject to work with

Thanks for the thoughts! As for the slant, to me it gives the shot a bit more energy and accentuates the natural S curves through the body position. Straight lines on the sides makes it feel too rigid to me. I tend to prefer shots that have architectural elements in them to not have lines parallel to the frame of the photo as I think it draws too much attention to the building/structure than to the subject. Just personal preference is all, no specific rule that I'm employing here

This was my first session with the new RF 85 1.2 DS. Wide open the image quality is stunning, way better than the previous EF version. There is almost NO chromatic aberrations, and the sharpness is through the roof. Simply amazing lens, one notch above the amazing 50 1.2.

Spencer,

Good to see you back in here again. I hope your life with MagMod is going well. Your company has become a staple in our industry.

Love these shots! My faves are the first one, sitting, and the fourth one, with her walking toward you.

Ron

I really liked very much the second pic. It stands out for being original, and specially for positioning the girl within one of the windows, opening the viewer's mind for abstract. Within all this the girl body positionr required imagination and is harmonic with the whole picture.
The colors and tone match very much
I would like to see the lower part of her legs, but this is far from harming this highly good image composition.
Lovely!

Hi Spencer, good to see a set from you. I also haven't been very active here for a number of years, for similar reasons. I'm jumping on the 2nd shot is my favorite bandwagon.

Nice shots. I don't like the electricity meter or whatever it is just above her head on the 5th shot. You could try and clone it out. You probably didn't notice it (easily done).

It is mine and my clients favorite image of the set. Unique and different is what we were going for!

I agree, it wouldn't have been that hard to remove but they said they didn't mind it...I'm partial either way because it's not always about doctoring the photos for perfection for me, but taking it out wouldn't have taken away from the image!
