p.4 #1 · TTartisan Leica M to Sony E adapter with 6-bit code

I figured out that my 2 lenses and 1 adapter that are misread as coded by the TTArtisan adapter work fine with the following workaround:

- First insert the adapter to the camera with adapter's front cap in-place, without any lens or stacked adapter
- Set the desired fl on the adapter
- Turn on the camera once and this will fix the fl setting as long as adapter is not disconnected again
- Turn off the camera and remove the front cap from the adapter
- Insert the lens or stacked adapter + lens on the TTArtisan adapter while the adapter is already on camera
- Turn on the camera again

This way the fl setting gets fixed while the camera is first turned on while there is nothing mounted on the adapter (except it's front cap), and there is no code being read. The fl stays as set on the first power-on as long as the adapter is staying on camera, regardless of what lenses or adapters are mounted on the adapter afterwards.

I also observed that today my CV 50/2 Heliar classic was read by the adapter as a 21/2.8 lens (when connecting adapter+lens combination together) whereas on my first day of testing it was consistently being read as a 90/4 lens. Not sure why it changed but I guess the incorrect code reading that happens with this lens is bordering between 2 different lens codes.

Additionally I tested the adapter's thickness compared to my CV VM-E close focus adapter II by checking where the best infinity setting is with some of my longer lenses. The TTArtisan is noticeably thinner that the CV adapter, and the CV is noticeably thinner than my Rayqual adapter. With many of my lenses the Rayqual is spot-on for infinity, but there are a couple that don't reach perfect infinity with the Rayqual. I've usually used CV adapters with those lenses to make sure they can reach perfect infinity. With the TTArtisan adapter it seems that all lenses will need noticeably more pullback for perfect infinity.

With my adapter, the focal length selector is already malfunctioning. With uncoded lenses, only the 28mm and 135mm focal length are correctly transmitted to EXIF. The middle ones (35,50,75) do not work anymore.

Same results with all my uncoded lenses. Even tried Juha's trick above (with the front cap) and the middle FLs still don't work.

Can this adapter’s firmware be updated? Or do you rather think it’s an electro-mechanical issue?

As far as I can tell, the firmware can't be updated by the user. I don't know what happened to my adapter but could be a malfunction of the FL wheel after one day of usage. I am hoping this is an isolated event.

Hi Juha,

Thank you for that testing and the suggestions. I went through all 5 of my non coded and mis-coded lenses and followed your prcedure. As long as I did not make an error, everything registered/recorded as the correct focal length. I will have to test this more and make sure that I use this method at least when I am changing lenses. I presume this will be true if I have 2 adapters. I will also have to test and confirm what happens when you leave the attached lens on the camera. Also, will need to make sure that I am adjusting and setting/recording the f stop that I am using.

I picked up the adapter from the post office today. I carefully followed the Kannisto Method and the adapter recognised my Tele-Elmar-M 135/4 as a 135mm lens. I did not find lens—>adapter an especially tight fit. When I removed the adapter & lens from the camera and put them back on again, the focal length in the EXIF was recorded as 35mm. Again I followed Juha’s instructions and it was properly recognised as a 135mm. When I turned the camera on and off with the adapter & lens attached, the focal length setting was maintained.

So it would appear that every time I want to use the Tele-Elmar, I’ll have to detach the lens from the adapter and go through the steps again. On the other hand, the adapter recognised my 6-bit coded 90mm APO-Summicron correctly even when the adapter & lens were removed and reattached. The 90 APO fit was definitely tighter than that of the TE 135. So all-in-all the adapter seems worth keeping.

Good to hear that my workaround is useful for others as well

I found one limitation to it so far. While the workaround has been applied and a lens that has a "6-bit code misreading issue" is staying on camera (& fl is set correctly via the workaround), if you try to charge the camera via USB-C with camera turned off, and then stop the charging and turn the camera back on, the 6-bit code gets misread again and the effect of the workaround disappears, so that it becomes necessary to reapply it. I tested this with a very short charging time of a couple of seconds and it effectively wiped out the workaround and caused the 6-bit code to be read again.

EDIT: Afterwards I have been unable to reproduce the problem where USB-C charging would retrigger the 6-bit code reading.

There might be some other conditions where the workaround gets lost as well. I'm going to test if it is still effective after a longer power-off time (such as all night etc.) as long as charging is not done...

EDIT: The workaround seems to persist for longer time of power off as well, I tested more than 12h of power-off state and the workaround was still in effect after that.

On other news, I found out that my CV 50/2 Heliar classic that had the 6-bit code misreading problem on my earlier tests can be quite easily connected to the TTArtisan adapter so that the hole where the pin on the adapter is supposed to click into is moving further (counterclockwise) than the pin's position and the pin doesn't click into place, although the lens is sitting tight on the adapter. If I make sure the pin is clicking into place precisely, there is no misreading of 6-bit code anymore with this lens. On the other hand, my M-Rokkor 40/2 still always has the misreading problem even though the pin is clicked into correct place.

One question ...
I'm happy to receive my adapter soon, but I read often that the lens/adapter side is very tight.
What about using LTM lenses with M-ring, can you detach the lens with LTM adapter or is there a problem due to the tightness?

This is definitely a concern. However, both Leica and Voigtlander made an M-mount rear lens cap with three protrusions that match the three cutouts on an LTM to M adapter. You press the back of the cap against the LTM adapter so that the protrusions “slot in” and it’s then easy to remove the LTM adapter from the M body or, in this case, the TTA M to E adapter. Here’s an eBay listing for one (and the photo accompanying the listing):

I have many LTM lenses and I tried connecting all of them to the TTArtisan adapter wlth LTM-M rings attached to the lenses. I didn't have any problems where the rings would have been stuck to the adapter with this adapter. However, I have one other Shoten helicoid adapter for M to Leica L-mount and that adapter is much tighter with lens connections than my TTArtisan adapter. With the super-tight Shoten adapter I've sometimes had problems with LTM-M rings getting stuck on the adapter when trying to remove the lens... Some of my lenses need really hard squeezing to be properly connected to that other adapter.

I guess it might depend on the copy of your TTArtisan adapter though, in case some of them are much tighter than others.

This is the TTArtisan video on how to use the adapter.

I've tested it on an A7R2 and A1 with Voigtlander lenses (all 6 bit coded) - the adapter works fine. I have also used it with a couple of uncoded Leica lenses and the FL wheel works fine as well. The adapter to lens fit is TIGHT, adapter to camera body is normal. Keeping my fingers crossed that it will continue to perform well. Having the exif data and IBIS is nice

Wow, thanks a lot!
I do own a Voiglaender lens cap like this, but never asked myself about these "knobs"

Adjusting the 4 metal sections (pushing the bent area upwards) will tweak the adapter tightness.

I'm getting my second copy today. My first worked fine for a day but the FL selector is malfunctioning now.

I just received my second TTA adapter and this one works perfectly. The FL selector works with all my non-coded lenses.
In the case of the Leica 75/1.4 Lux and Leica 135/4 TE, I painted the screw white. For these old lenses, there is a screw on the 6-bit area and it was tricking the TTA adapter.

My second adapter is scheduled for delivery later today.

Also, I found that when removing the battery from the battery compartment of my camera to charge it that the setting information for the adapter and lens are lost (at least for un-coded lenses). The adapter and lens must be removed, reset the focal length, reattatch the adapter and lens and turn the camera on as ususal.

Amazon has the TTA 6-bit adapter for only $36 (prime).
It's probably a price mistake but I was able to order one. Hurry up!

p.4 #17 · TTartisan Leica M to Sony E adapter with 6-bit code

I want to report in again this time about both of my adapters. Again, the second adapter is quite a tight fit for my M-mount lenses. This time I only checked one of my Leica M coded lenses (24mm f3.8 Elmar Asph), one of my properly coded lenses (CV 90mm f2.8 Apo-Skopar), and the following uncoded or mis-coded lenses: CV 28mm f2 Ultron II VM, Minolta CLE MC 40mm f2 M-Rokkor, Zeiss 85mm f4 Tele-Tessar ZM, and Leica 135mm f4 Tele-Elmar V1 lenses.

Now the good news, both adapters read and recorded the Leica coded and my coded lenses properly.

Now the not so good news, the new adapter does not read my uncoded and mis-coded lenses as well as my first adapter.

Both adapters almost always read the CV 28mm f2 Ultron II VM using the method in the TTartisan short video when the adapter is set to 28mm.

Both adapters usually read my Minolta CLE MC 40mm f2 M-Rokkor lens as 35mm when the adapter was set to 35mm using the method in the TTartisan short video. I believe the new adapter had more misreads but using Juha's method I was able to correct this issue.

My Zeiss 85mm f4 Tele-Tessar ZM was set for 75mm and I believe there were fewer misreads with my original adapter than the new one using the method in the TTartisan video. These mis-reads could be corrected by Juha's method. Some of the misreads I believe may have been by careless adjustment of the Adapter focal length setting to 90mm.

The poorest showing for both adapters was my Leica 135mm f4 Tele-Elmar V1 lens. The original adapter was always set to 135mm using the method in the TTartisan video, the lens would always read as a 50mm f2 lens on my original adapter. When I used Juha's method for correction, the lens would read as 135mm f1.0 lens. As to the same lens on the second adapter which was also set to 135mm, it would read as a 21mm f2.8 lens when using the method in the TTartisan video. When using Juha's method for correction there was no change noted and it still would read as a 21mm f2.8 lens.

This is a very disappointing showing as far as I am concerned. At least with Leica coded and properly coded lenses, it appears that the adapters do a very admirable and good job of reading and recording. As to reading and recording uncoded and miscoded lenses, it appears that there is a fair bit of variability or relatively poor QC so that adapters are not reading the same and some read better than others. In fact, some adapters are not even able to read some lenses as in the case of my 135mm f4 Tele-Elmar.

It will be interesting to see what these adapters will do with my Novoflex 6 bit Leica R to Leica M adapter that was finally shipped from Hobart, Tasmania. I hope to receive it in a week or two. At that point I will mount my Leica R 180mm f3.4 Apo-Telyt, Leica R 80-200mm f4 Vario Elmar, and probably my Leica R 28mm f2.8 Super Angulon PC with the Novoflex ASTAT-NEX ring for support. I will report back on this once the adapter is in hand.

Received my adapter today.
Unfortunately it recognizes my Skopar 3.5/21 VM on my Sony as a 3.4 18mm lens.
My M10 shows 3.4 21mm SEM correctly.
Does anyone have the same problem.

Got a mail with a very short answer from TTartisan today.
Unfortunately the SEM 21 is not supported with this adapter.
So it seems not included in the FW.

I sent back the adapter, as I use 21mm very often ...

I can confirm this. My 21 SEM shows up as 18/3.4 with the TTA adapter.

I wonder if there is a way to update the adapter's firmware when attached to the camera body. Did you ask them if this is possible in case of a future FW update?
