p.4 #1 · Pixii - Digital Rangefinder Camera

$3k seems like a lot to spend on an apsc camera when you can find an m240 for the same or less. but the pixel density is high

Thanks for the link. I’m not a fan of YouTube reviews but very much enjoyed this one. He addressed the Pixii’s shortcomings in a straightforward fashion, noting which had been solved with software updates and which were inherent limitations. And the review was illustrated with some very good photographs. I wouldn’t buy a Pixii because the APS-C format is a deal breaker but now have a much better appreciation of its particular strengths. Ironic, isn’t it, that a tiny company can produce the software driven camera that Zeiss attempted and failed so miserably to do with their ZX1.

Yeah but it is a new/never used camera instead of a 5+ year old camera. It is coming from a very small boutique mfg so they don't have pricing scale.
And it is still cheaper than the APS-C Leica Cl, when the Cl was released.

My "problem" is I already have a Fuji Xpro3 which has amazing native lenses that go wide or go long, and the Leica M, which has amazing native lenses that go wide or go long.

I still think the Pixii is very cool. I mean, if they can make a digi RF M, why can't Cosina?

The Leica CL was $2,795 upon release in 2017. The 8GB Pixii model is cheaper (at the current exchange rate) but I wonder whether you might get hit with US import duties.

IMO it is a very cool camera (with excellent image quality) but in APS-C land I already own the (by Leica cowardly abandoned) Leica CL and TL2 and the Ricoh GR III. Not sure whether I want to add to that.

If they go FF though I will be first in line.

Leica’s M sensor design places offset microlenses above each photosite to solve the problems of vignetting and color shift that occur with lenses with large ray angles. Perhaps this sensor design is so heavily protected by patents that neither Cosina nor Zeiss nor anyone else can produce a full frame digital M mount camera. I used the Snapshot-Skopar 25/4 and Biogon 25/2.8 lenses—both of which are terrible on FF digital cameras—with various Sony APS-C cameras and got excellent results. Similarly, the Pixii gets around this limitation by using an APS-C sensor so a full frame Pixii may not be possible.

Even if they could make a full-frame version, it would probably be close in price to Leica. Kind of a catch-22, either compete directly with Leica at a high price point or compete with Fuji at a lower price point.

In ways I think the Xpro3 is a much closer alternative to the Pixii because it has the same sensor size. Using the same lens on both cameras will give the same crop. The Pixii has the ‘advantage’ of an optical rf. The Fuji has the optical vf with manual focus performed with a little screen within the screen. It of course also has the advantages of a full EVF if wanted so you can use any lens w adapter, not just a limited focal length selection. It can use strobes. It has a mechanical and electronic shutter. Doesn’t have slow down issues after firing off a few shots.
Hmm.

I didn't realize but apparently the Pixii has the ability to produce monochrome raw files:

The more I look at this camera, the more impressed I am, and more bummed it’s not FF. This B/W RAW is interesting—would love to see just how monochrome-y it is.

Do you include Leica M digital cameras?

Badly worded on my part. I was thinking of stock Sony full frame cameras when I wrote it. The Biogon ZM 25/2.8 was fine when I tried it on the Leica M10-P though 25mm is a wider FoV than I prefer on a full frame sensor. I haven’t tried the Snapshot-Skopar 25/4 on a digital Leica but I did shoot a couple of rolls of film with it on my MP a week or two ago and not surprisingly these looked good. I do prefer 28mm but the Skopar has focus ring click stops at 1m, 1.5m, and 3mm which turn the Leica M into a very appealing point and shoot camera.

I've been really curious about this camera...and Mattias Burling is one of my favorite content creators. That said, I wasn't really blown away by the monochrome images in that video....I don't know how they would compare with a Leica Monochrom, but they didn't grab me the way some of the Leica Monochrom images do....too small a sample to know whether that's a real thing or imagined...

He mentions he bought his Pixii but also is an ambassador for them.

Is no one worried that the memory is not replaceable with no expected life published? All flash memory has a finite life. This thing could easily be a 3k Euro brick in 3 years. In contrast, I still have dSLRs and mirrorless cameras that work just fine from 2010...

I have a M7, M10P and Q2. I really got the Pixii out of curiorisity. The discussion above is very valid, but to me, it's not a deal breaker. The Pixii is one of the more charming cameras in recent memories. I have not shot enough with it to share a more complete view, but so far, while it is clearly a work in progress, the IQ seems outstanding despite its

Interesting little camera! I have really enjoyed using 35mm and 50mm lenses on APS-C DSLRs, in the past, which has resulted in my considering adding a CL or TL. If the PIXII can survive, in this camera market environment, for a couple of years, I may well consider buying. (Now retired, or at least between careers, I have to spread my purchases more thinly, over longer periods of time.)

The lack of owner reviews is very disappointing. And frankly quite surprising.

There are more reviews online of this camera which was only released 3 weeks ago:

I don't think so. I actually want to read reviews of the Pixii, and not by its brand ambassadors who basically say ignore the issues, use it to its strengths. Which is ok I guess, that is how I used to use my Leica M9. But that was 12 years ago.

Where are the real owner reviews?
