Suteetat and Phil Waring. What is the 400mm f2.8 lens case like? Can you fit the Z9 + 400 mounted? Also, what is the outer diameter of the lens hood?
There is only a softcase with one non-removable shoulder strap. The lens is shipped with white foam padding at the bottom.
If you remove the foam padding, you can put in the lens with Z9 attached to it with no problem. There are two small side pockets for batteries, cards etc. The soft case is a excellent for traveling by plane as a carry on when I went on my trip this past week.
Much more useful than the hardcase in my opinion.
The hood is approximately 6 3/4 inches in diameter in front. The rear is 6 1/4 inch, just under 7 inches if you include the knob to fasten the hood (sorry about imperial unit, the measuring tape that I happened to find immediatley only have inches, I am sure if someone from the US ask, the measuring tape I find first will be in metric ).

Thank you for the feedback, Suteetat. Much appreciated.
I quite like the bag and also the hood that fits on the lens as a lens cap. I might invest in the hood cap and check out the bag for my 400 f2.9E FL VR. However, like everything Nikon these days, the cost may be prohibitive!

The bag might be tricky. 400/2.8e FL is .9 inch shorter but FTZ adapter is a bit over an inch long so Z9 with FTZ and 400/2.8e FL may just barely fit or may be not quite. There should be on problem using it to transport the lens alone though.
With 400/2.8s VR TC and Z9, the fit is not extremely tight but very snuggle and there is not much room left.

Actually it might be ok as the 400 f2.8 + TC at 380mm is actually 22mm longer than the 400 f2.8E FL VR at 358mm.

I've been waiting on that video as well!!
I wonder why it’s taking so long. He posted the picture of those super teles almost 2 months ago.
I’m starting to wonder if he’s under some kind of embargo or possibly something is wrong with the preproduction unit and need new firmware and tweaks. This is all my speculation of course.

Man I don't know what's going on! I'm thinking Nikon said hold off for some reason? Production issues, firmware tweaks who knows but I hope they get going on whatever it is I'm getting anxious! 🤣

The way I see it is that the longer it takes me to get this lens, the less likely I will keep the order. Once 800pf is announced and possibly more information on the 600f4S, this 400f2.8 is less attractive to me. I really need to be at least 600mm to shoot what I want to shoot around here. I just thought this 400f2.8 would be a better lens to travel with with the 600f4. And I also want to improve my bird approaching technique to be closer to them and not a mile away with IQ crippling atmospheric pollution.
My better shots are from bare 600E since I was able to handhold and not have a tripod with me. I was using the 600VR before that and it always had a 1.4x TC and on tripod. Even when I had more than 800mm, I didn’t like having tripod on all the time.
This is why I’m really looking forward to these lighter super teles.

I am impatiently waiting for the new 600mm F4S too. I am selling my 600 F4e fl tomorrow and I'll try to get a used tamron 150-600 g2 in the meantime. I have the 100-400 but I need to put at least the tc 1.4 on it and I'll be at only 560mm F8!!

I had a lot of fun today with 400/2.8S and TCx2. March is supposed to be the windiest month here and best time for kite surfing, wing foils etc. Mother nature did not cooperate very much and wind was not really strong enough for surfers to do some acrobatic moves on water unfortunately but it is still a lot of fun.

Here with TCx2 tracking a person doing a 360 jump.
He was already in the air when I realized that he made a jump so the first shot in the series in this one.
Then....
There were 13 shots in the air and a couple is a little soft as he was reaching the apex with his head turning away.
A few other random shots, all with TCx2
PS
This is the second time I shoot kite surfing. The first time was several years ago when a friend of mine hosted an international circuit competition which was a lot of fun. Camera was on tripod on the beach, standing height almost at water line. Looking at these pictures, I wonder if the pictures might be better if I lower the tripod down say to a foot above the ground?
What do you think? It would look a bit more dramatic I think but I would need to use flipped LCD screen instead of EVF.
In yesterday condition, flip screen would be totally useless as it was so bright out that I could not even review a picture quickly. May be adding a shade to LCD screen might help? The good news is that EVF is so bright that even with my sunglasses on, I have no problem seeing through the EVF at all.
