I was headed into Utah's La Sal range for a day of winter photography in January until a snowstorm turned me back. The area was socked in by clouds but the weather satellite animation showed potential clearing right around sunset, so I switched plans and hiked to Delicate Arch.

It’s a wondrous location that I have been avoiding returning to the last 10 years due to crazy crowds, but this day was not bad and everyone there was respectful. The snowstorm hung over the horizon and there was no view until half an hour before sunset, when the clouds gradually cleared to reveal the freshly snow-capped peaks of the La Sals as a stunning backdrop for this iconic arch. I was grateful to get the golden sidelight before sundown followed by pink glow on clouds as dusk neared.

It was a good day! Thanks for viewing.

Congratulations, Ross, your persistence paid off! Both images are gorgeous, but the matching sky color with the red rock in the second image is simply incredible!

These are some of the best images that I have seen of Delicate Arch, and I have seen many pictures of it! Everything about these photos comes together so magically, the drama of the light and the clouds, the fresh snow, the La Sals in the background. I'm not sure which of the two I like better. Bravo.

It got my vote just because you were able to get the shot without a fat teenager in yoga pants stretching and taking selfies while putting tracks in the snow under the arch

Unless you cloned that out like I always have to.

Two compelling interpretations. I lean more towards the second one for its softer appeal.

Very nice! I have lived in Utah for almost 7 years now, and been to Delicate arch once. Photos like yours want me to head down there right now

I have never seen a shot with the mountain range so defined in the background at Delicate. This is top notch my friend!
