p.4 #1 · R3 Locking up

People are experiencing freezes with SD cards only, as well as with CFExpress cards, and when not even trying to take photos. Considering it is a minority of R3 users on this forum NOT experiencing freezes, I’m going to go with it being a software issue that you just happen to not be hitting.

New firmware released. See release note below#6.
I haven't had the camera long enough to experience any of these issues.

Firmware Version 1.1.1 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:
1. Adds the ability to use Smart phone link adapter AD-P1.
2. Adds the ability, when using EOS Utility or Browser Remote for remote shooting with two cards inserted, to set the recording method and select the card to be recorded to.
3. Adds the ability to cancel [Subject Tracking] by pressing the Quick Control <Q> and then <INFO> buttons.
4. Adds Ukrainian as an option to the language of "Browser Remote".
5. Improves operation stability during FTP transfer.
6. Fixes an issue that in rare instances, the camera may become inoperable when shooting in the Servo AF setting while operating the <AF-ON> button.
7. Fixes an issue, in which the camera cannot be used as an access point if the camera is being used in a region that only support 2.4 GHz bandwidth for Wi-Fi connections.

One can only be optimistic, however when my R3 froze, it was asleep or, mostly, I was doing nothing. Only once was I actively shooting. Right now my original R3 has gone back to Canon. It is being replaced and the new one goes out today. I'll try it first with the original firmware and the upgrade and see. Finger's crossed...

Of the two times my R3 locked up one was exactly like this - set it down for a moment and when I returned it would not wake from sleep & on/off didn’t work. Had to pull out the battery. So I’m curious, did Canon offer to replace rather than repair (replace the firmware)? Also did you buy direct from Canon or from a dealer, go through CPS or regular customer support?

Sorry for all the questions. Just trying to figure out if I should try for replacement or return while I can.

When mine first locked up, it was during the first week I had it. So it was within the return the unit period, if you will. Of course getting it replaced with the number on backorder now is tricky. So by getting on record with Canon during that 'period', I preserved my return it right. I was dealing with CPS at that stage and they recommended a repair vs returning it and taking a chance on a replacement. So I tried the repair. They replicated the issue on the bench and their fix was to reinstall the firmware, after which they could NOT get it to freeze. They sent it back to me and sure enough, it still froze up. And so I got up with CPS who put me over to sales. Sales was a joke and so I escalated to Customer Relations. I hit gold there and they agreed to the return and replacement, but it took them two weeks to arrange a replacement unit. I purchased direct from Canon online, otherwise I would have had to go back to the dealer. I'm glad for having purchased direct in this matter.

That's the odd part - does not seem to be a single cause.
The problem/result is broadly the same, but can it really be cause by so many different variables?
Obviously the million dollar question is which software issue or setting? I read the posts mentioning the issue, and cannot come to a conclusive single cause ...nor combo of several.
Hopefully Canon gets an hold at whatever it might and gets a firmware update that solves it

one thing has not been mentioned is, are freezes happening with a RF mount lens or with EF-R adapter?
RobAmy seems to be using mostly native RF lenses; I am using only EF lenses with adapter, but could it be with certain RF lenses only?

p.4 #7 · R3 Locking up

Canon replaced my R3 and the new one arrived yesterday with the original firmware 1.0.1. I loaded my settings saved from the previous camera via a CSD file, which worked perfectly. Yesterday I did some shooting with no issues, having left it on for most of the afternoon, waking it to engage in activity. All good.
This morning, I went to upgrade the firmware from 1.0.1 to 1.1.1. After the updated completed, I went immediately to updating the firmware for the RF100-500 lens. As I did so, I found the "Set" button was non-responsive, yet, as before, I could use the touchscreen. At that point, I realized the camera was frozen and would not respond to any button or dial, as before. Again, a battery pull was necessary to reboot. About an hour later, the camera was on, went to sleep, and froze again, not being responsive to being awakened by any means aside from a battery pull. I've notified Canon and shared with them my settings, via the CSD file, along with specifications, i.e. lens and memory card specs. Should be easy enough for them to replicate, as it surely did for me. So it seems to me it is related to configuration, as it seems the same across the product line, unless I've been shipped two bad cameras. We'll await to hear from Canon.

My friends,

I believe I found the issue causing freeze-ups in the Canon R3!!!

Recall the following:

1) I experienced freeze-ups with my Canon R3 the first week I received it.

2) Canon CPS took the camera in for repair, replicated the issue, reinstalled the firmware, reset it to factory settings, tested it, found no more freeze-ups, declared it fixed and returned it to me.

3) I restored my settings manually and the freeze-ups still occurred.

4) Canon replaced my original R3 with a brand new R3

5) I updated my firmware to V1.1.1 and restored my settings from a CSD file this time, and the freeze-ups still occurred.

6) In all cases my freeze-ups were such that the buttons and dials would not respond, yet touch functions still functioned. It would also freeze-up, at times, while asleep and could not be awakened. Of course, still the screen was black, no touch function could work. The only way to restore the camera was to pull the battery and then reboot the camera.

I have since, of course, contacted Canon and am awaiting a response, as Canon's engineering department seems to be in a denial mode, yet recall a repair technician in Virginia replicated the issue when it first went in for repair.

I advised Canon that while I await their response, I was going to, one by one, change my settings to default and see if any particular setting eliminated the freeze-ups.

My first setting change was to restore the aperture and speed change dial settings to default, as I had them reversed. No change. I still had freeze-ups, so I restored my setting.

Next, I reasoned that, since the freeze-up even occurred while the camera was asleep, the only function I had changed that occurred doing the sleep mode would be the GPS setting, which I had set to Mode 2. I disabled the GPS altogether. Since I have done so, I have left the camera on 24x7. Not once has it failed to awaken from sleep mode nor has it frozen at all while awake and being used. I have been testing for a solid week now (on 24x7) and I'm optimistic that this is the cause of the freeze-ups.
I'm asking that some of you who are experiencing freeze-ups with the R3 such as I have been experiencing to check this setting and 1) verify it is enabled on your camera and 2) verify that by disabling it that the freeze-ups no longer occur.

Similarly, those of you who have an R3 and experienced no freeze-ups, can you verify that your GPS is disabled.

Again, I'm optimistic that this is the issue, but I'd like to get feedback from others to verify what I'm experiencing.

Steve

I have an R3 with GPS mode set to Mode 2, time autoupdate, position update every 15s, GPS logger disabled. In the three weeks I have had it, I have had no lockups. The first few days were with firmware 1.0.1, the rest of the time with 1.1.1. GPS mode 2 is not supposed to supposed to look for data when asleep so I doubt this is the cause of your issue.

Mode 2
"GPS is off with camera off but GPS signals are received periodically in auto power off"

That said, I interpret sleep as auto power off and according to Canon's own words, GPS signals are received.

I offer no explanation as to why, but the freeze-ups that occurred quite frequently, almost daily, have ceased to occur after having left the camera on now for a week. The only time is is off is when it sleeps. I have awakened the camera successfully dozens of times daily and used it. So far, so good. The only change I've made is disabling the GPS.

I have not had any lock ups with my first R3 and just got a second with no issues for far, granted have not used it much yet. I use mainly my RF 400 and RF 600 but adapt my EF 200-400 a bit. I have used the EF 400mm DO II and the RF 100-500mm also but I no longer own them so have not tried them on the new R3. I have never used GPS on them, both have the same exact settings. I do not use back button like I did with a DSLR. I do use it as another AF selection.

I haven’t had any lock ups with my R3. When I bought my R5 I had a few lockups within a couple of days of having it. Another member here suggested I reformat both my CFExpress and SD cards with the “low level format” box checked. Once I did that my R5 never locked up again.

So when I got my R3 I made sure the first time around when formatting a card, I had the low level format box checked. To be clear I only have the low level format
box checked the fist time I am using a card. Unless the cards are new, or if I was swapping cards between the R5 and R3 (which I don’t do) I don’t have low level format checked.

For what it’s worth I use Sony Tough CFExpress and SD cards in the R5 and Delkin Black CFExpress and Sony Tough SD in the R3.

I've now had several other R3 users advise me that turning off GPS resolves the freeze issue. I've advised Canon on this and they haven't replied as yet. While that may resolve one cause of a freeze-up, it doesn't do much for those who would like to use GPS without freeze-ups.

I just recently turned on GPS on my R3 but my several "failure to awaken" after 10-20 minutes of "sleep" happened several times prior to using GPS and has happened once since beginning to use GPS. The only thing I see in common with my several "failures to awaken" is that they were all solved by quickly removing/replacing the battery--neither the On/Off switch nor anything else would do anything at all...
