That said, I interpret sleep as auto power off and according to Canon's own words, GPS signals are received.
I offer no explanation as to why, but the freeze-ups that occurred quite frequently, almost daily, have ceased to occur after having left the camera on now for a week. The only time is is off is when it sleeps. I have awaked the camera successfully dozens of times daily and used it. So far, so good. The only change I've made is disabling the GPS.
