I have been away for awhile, been having some problems with my hands which has keep me away from my camera. My wife and I traveled up to the southwest part of Colorado for several days to enjoy the Fall scenery. I took my Z9, 24-120 and the 100-400 as the combos are light enough for me to handle.
We ran across the largest group of Elk that I have ever witnessed. There was a really nice bull that looked to be in his prime with a harem of at least 30 cows, not counting the offspring. What a sight to behold, although it was short lived after a bunch of old farts like myself starting pulling over to see the spectacle as well.
I was having a heck of a time getting that dang camera to focus where I wanted it to. It would focus on their butts, on their feet and any twig or branch within five feet, but not their eyes. Anyway I fired away hoping to get a few keepers at least. I thought to myself, this could be a once in a lifetime event for me and my camera sucks! Then I remembered I didn't look at how I had it setup before using it, duh! Didn't have time to screw with the menus so I switched into manual focus (noted by MF on the equipment used) to try and get some backup photos before the harem moved away. Fortunately I got some keepers from both methods.
The first one is cropped pretty heavy. The last two were taken around a town named "Ironton", gee I wonder how it got its name!

There are animals that the Z9 does not recognize and these Elk may amongst them. If that happens to me I will turn off face recognition, switch to 3d AF, place AF box over eye, activate AF and it will stick on the eye. I use recall setting to turn off face recognition with a single button press and have 3d AF assigned to another button. I have the d pad set to centralise the AF point.
If you can face reading long tedious text, then buy Perry's Z9 AF ebook. There is great info in it but it could be condensed into 10% of the space.

I really like your idea of a single programmed button to switch facial recognition on and off! Now if I can just remember which one it is.
I thought I had it set up where I wouldn't have any major problems on the trip and not have to deep dive into the settings. I just checked my settings and they were Focus Mode AF-C, AF-area mode 3D and AF subject Animal. The trip was more for enjoyment and not so much for photography, but I do always take a camera for Just in Case.
I am not disappointed with camera or lens choices I made, just the opposite, the camera and lenses performed as expected. The only disappointment was with the "Photographer" needs to learn how to use all the bells and whistles that come with it.

To switch off facial recognition with one button, I use Recall Shooting Functions (Hold) in f2 Custom Controls (Shooting) with just that one function set. I assign it to a press of the sub selector centre. I only wish Nikon would give us more recall states as it is a brilliant thing.
