mostly birds here so I will throw in some BIF shots.. (bikes in flight)
used if for the first time at the track this weekend. AF is incredible, never hesitated and locked on instantly. No freeze ups, everything worked better than I expected.
One drawback, I filled a card quicker than in the past. After a while I learned to time my shutter releases better. This thing is my favorite sports camera.
Used the 400 2.8E with ftz adapter and found the focus to be fast and sure footed.
Oh, and the zero blackout has made me not want to use my other Nikons anymore D850 and D5

Good stuff there Michael, I'm hoping to get in some superbike shooting this spring and maybe even try some of these mud slingers too. Z9 arrived at shop today (non-NPS, #2 in line), so I'll pick it up tomorrow and hopefully start adding to this thread by next week.

Thx Creative Edge, it is the first bike pictures i see, done with the Z9.
The itch to buy a Z9 is huge.
95% off my photo's are Motocross,( Flickr ) but the D5 does a great job.
And still i have way to many pictures.
But its on more then 650.000 clicks now.
New shutter, or the Z9.
I was shooting with the D5, D6 and now the Z9. Put it this way I no longer want to pick up the other cameras..
For motocross, the no blackout makes it a gamechanger..

Thanks for the great bikes in flight images. EXIF data on them would be awesome.
I'm not opposed to either BIF's, but motocross was a huge part of my life decades ago. A lot less suspension travel back then. I can only imagine riding today and the possibilities. Bike and gear setup just as the sun was coming up, and beating the heat while riding the unmaintained power line roads north of Phoenix out to the Salt River and back (I'm sure there are houses everywhere now, and a lot more roads crossing the trails). Three of us (two were Team Maico) would race each direction with few breaks.
What AF-area mode(s) did you end up using/preferring, and were you using auto subject detection or specifically people or vehicle?

I too have been around MX since I was a kid and still love it. I never raced but love watching and taking photos.
As far as af goes, used wide no bike or face detection. The less the camera has to do the quicker it reacts.
All were taken with the 400mm at 3.5 fstop. shutter speeds varied. I shoot on manual with auto iso.

These are excellent Michael.
One of my first truly enlightening photography experiences was shooting a Trans-AMA race with my fathers Nikon 35mm camera (ASA 400 film) in 1977. It was a major event. Big names at the time were Roger DeCoster, Tony D., Marty Smith, Kent Howerton, etc.
I need to find some local races & take the Z9 along for spin now. Hmmmm..... :-)
