Great series!
The second pictures is my preferred one. It describes the situation at best, IMO.
# 4 shows what the camera is capable of in proper hands.

I think the magic in the "dual stream" viewfinder design is that shooting with the Z9 feels like shooting with a rangefinder or pellicle mirror SLR... there's no mirror or shutter blackout, there's no real lag, and the camera is as quiet (or loud) as you want.
I haven't had a truly blackout-free camera since my old Oly E-10. It's just a pleasant shooting experience, especially when shooting high frame rates and/or panning.
It's a whole lot of expensive technology whose virtue is that it becomes unnoticeable. At least until you pick up one of your other cameras!
As far as viewfinder resolution goes, I don't care so much now that we have focus peaking. A high resolution rear LCD is helpful for reviewing images. A high resolution EVF has limited appeal to me. I'll take it, but I wouldn't pay for a higher resolution LCD than the Z9 has. ...Show more →
The sentence you quoted was because I'm comparing the Z9 to my three other blackout free and lag free cameras I've owned which aren't doing the dual stream (as far as I know, if we take Nikon at their word). Nothing is different or better looking through the Nikon EVF in regards to blackout or lag as far as the experience of shooting goes. All 4 cameras don't have blackout and don't have perceptible lag in shooting. The specs of the Z9 EVF in regards to resolution and refresh lag behind some of the others (refresh for all 3, resolution for one of them) and yet overall the shooting experience is very similar between all 4 of them. Except as I said I really haven't tested the Z9 in the types of situations I noticed were problematic with the other ones if I turned them down to 60Hz.
The only real EVF "spec" that I find better on one of the competitors is the magnification setting. The expansive view you see looking through a 0.9x is something no other camera I've owned has (as my best DSLRs were around 0.76x).
As far as LCD shooting goes, my LCD shooting is holding the camera on the toe of my shoe as I squat down and shoot from an inch or so off the ground/water. So far I can't even notice a difference doing that with the Z9's higher res LCD vs my lower res LCDs. I think it is because I'm not interested in details when doing so...just interested in shapes and movement and a bit more detail on the Z9 just doesn't make a difference for how I'm using it. I do like that I can do tilt-screen shooting in portrait orientation with the Z9. But I do that maybe 2% of the time....still nice to have.

Thank you Sir, for the kind words.
The 1st two, of the gulls chasing the Coot were from a series of about 50 shots, all of which were in acceptable focus. It was an interesting behavioral observation opportunity.
The 2nd pair were from a different part of the lake, where the Gulls were harassing Cormorants and stealing their fish. More of the same, only different.
As Mike mentioned, Gulls make for great practice. Lol!

I tried the A1 and Z9 side by side and while both offer great viewfinders, I found the Nikon brighter and less jumpy when panning

@mholdef out of curiosity, what is your Sony A1 "Finder Frame Rate" setting configured as - standard, high, or higher? that could impact the smoothness

Since some of you got both A1 and Z9, do you feel IBIS better with Z9 over the A1? I saw on youtube yesterday some one tested and found Z9 has better IBIS and it's obvious.

So I just picked up my z9. Does anyone have a good link or suggestions for settings for BIF? I am coming from a D500 and D850 so I’m assuming setting will be quite a bit different as well as a learning curve going to mirrorless. Sorry if this has already been asked. Thanks for the help and I look forward to contributing to this thread ASAP.

This was done by Damien Bernal. At 20:15 you can see the VR (IBIS, or combined, not sure since it was French) comparison between Z9 and A1. Z9 is obviously better.

Not surprising....Sony has always had pretty pathetic IBIS...

Not saying my setup is the be all, end all but here it is for what it's worth...
I shoot in full M changing my SS, aperture and ISO as needed and watching the histogram and live EVF preview.
AF-C, Release Priority, Blocked Shot : 5, Erratic. Eye-AF set to Animal
AF modes limited to Single, Wide-Area (S, L), Auto, 3D
AF limited to AF-C
Shutter button AF usually set to Wide-Area L or Wide-Area S
AF-ON set to Auto AF via the "AF Area" option
Joystick: Recall Shooting Function for my perched birds set to change SS: 1/320, ISO: Auto-ISO, AF Area: Single pt (I may change this to Wide-Area AF (S)), Blocked shot response 3, Steady
REC: Switch DX/FX
Fn1: Change AF Area modes
Fn2: SHOOT
Fn3: Go to top item My Menu (set to Battery but may set this to Subject detection settings)
OK: centers AF point
L-Fn: AF Area Mode changes to 3D
A few thoughts:
* I've been having some difficulty pushing the joystick straight in to bring up my RSF, if I don't concentrate I move AF point. So I tried setting my main AF mode on shutter to Auto and having the AF-ON do the Wide-Area. Set like that there is no AF point to move. However, the issue I ran into with that setup is there is no way to move my Single AF point when pushing in the joystick to bring up my RSF. If I leave Wide-Area on shutter and move the point off center then the Single point brought up by RSF goes to that position. So I think I'm going to have to just concentrate more on pushing the joystick straight in.
* Vertical shooting I have it save a different AF-Area mode and position. I have it on Wide-Area L positioned up in the frame as the only time I shoot vertical I'm shooting something like a close up heron where the head will be on the top 1/3 of the frame.
* So far I'm not really a fan of 3D. I prefer Auto. But I will give 3D a bit more testing time to see how it behaves. I found it jumping off even a straightforward perched subject with distant, grossly OOF background. It still may be okay to run instead of Auto for a BIF after initiation with Wide-Area.

I would venture to say that 90 percent of the shots I am getting with the Z9 I could get with my D500 when the light isnt really low....however that 10 percent that would be difficult for me to nail with the D500 makes me smile when the Z9 nails one of those shots. This is one of those shots.
