Just got my Z9 and I'm playing around in the house between meetings while the light quickly fades outside.
One thing I recall hearing complaints about is how--with other makes--you could assign a button to one AF mode, and a second button to a second AF mode. The case I heard commonly attributed was, one button is area AF for face detect, and the other is single AF for traditional focus/recompose. And I've heard people with Z9's talk about using shooting banks and other workarounds to accomplish this on the Z9.
I was just setting up my controls, and the "AF-area mode + AF-ON" option for my various Fn buttons. To play around, I set my AF-ON button as traditional back-button focus and set the camera to AF area. Then I set Fn1 to 3D tracking+AF-ON. Then I set Fn2 to Single-point+AF-ON. Now, I can press one of three buttons to engage one of three AF modes.
Isn't this what everybody was clamoring for? It sure seems to work nicely, as I chase my cats around the house wishing it were daylight...

This feature is standard on Nikon bodies. As far as I know, on Sony, you can assign a few AF options of your choice to one button and press that button to toggle between only these choices quickly. I think this is a nice feature on Sony that could be handy and it is just a firmware implementation. If I remember this discussion correctly. Not sure if this option is available on A7r IV, never used it myself

Yes and no. Yes that is the feature everyone wanted back from their Nikon DSLR days because a lot of us used that on D500, D850 etc. Nikon took it away in Z cameras until the Z9.
No, in that Canon and Sony just allow a lot more things to be programmed when pushing a button than just an AF change. Nikon Z9 does have this feature called Recall shooting function. That allows for a few more things. However, Sony allows three of these and Nikon only one.
There are also a few other features in Canon and Sony that allow more customization but I won't get into them here.

Thanks for the background. The Z6 is the only other Nikon I've owned, so this feature is new to me. I find the implementation pretty nice, although I'd like to have an indicator of the middle of the frame, cause it's a bit difficult to guesstimate to kick off 3D tracking accurately.
I've always assigned the AF Area button to Fn2 on my Z6, so switching modes is as easy as holding the button and spinning a dial... I think I'd actually prefer that to a button that switches, as an A->B->C->A progression seems like it would be slower.
In any case, I find this "multiple AF buttons" mechanism extremely intuitive and helpful, and I wish my Z6 supported it as well.

So I picked mine up this afternoon. In case anyone was wondering, the Delkin Power 128GB (not the Black) gets ~76 shots off in lossless before hitting the buffer, and it clears very very quickly.
It’s probably the best option for anyone that doesn’t need or want 325gb, 512gb or higher on a single card, which the other top performers are.
I don’t plan on much 8k, but wanted the option, and also wanted to lay on the shutter while tracking a harrier or something every once in a while, but generally am not taking more than 1000-1500 shots a day, and I also still wanted 2 cards so I went with 2 of these for ~$300 instead of spending $800-$1000 on 2 cards I would never come close to filling up, just to get the high performance option.

I think I see why I'm so happy with this feature and others are still left wanting. All I really want is quick access to two AF modes, so when the area and ML modes are inappropriate I can quickly focus/recompose with a single AF point, like I used to do with my ancient Canons.
Some of these Z9 features are pretty nice, and I hope some of that trickles down to the lower models. I particularly like the control dial sensitivity setting. The lower sensitivity is much nicer to use, and how the other cameras should have been configured from the start!

Thank you very much, Rick!
Yes, I think I do get more BIF shots with the Z9 than with any previous DSLR including the D850 and D500. It locks on much more readily and more tenaciously. It's not perfect but it depends on AF settings as most are learning. Most of the shots above came from a series of shots where they were all in focus.

Welcome to the World of modern stacked sensor mirrorless photography. It is an amazing thing and will just keep getting better as you learn the camera and optimize its potential.

Yeah I'm glad I passed the Z7II over for it. I could've gotten the Z7II for free with my trade ins, but I wanted something above the second gens regarding AF capabilities. The Z9 is built like a brick poop house, but it's very fun to use. this is me wrote:
Yup, the Z9 feels right.
