Last weekend I made an amazing discovery regarding the Z9. It can be used to shoot things other than birds... and... even more surprising... it can be shot with a manual focus lens too. :-)

I would think A1 would be a much better competing choice to Z9 than A7r IVa. I do have A7r IV and its AF is nowhere near the capability of Z9. Its laggy EVF is also no contest and its high iso won't be hearly as good. for action/wildlife, I don't think the extra 15 mp is worth the drop in AF/EVF performance. In a grand scheme of things, A7r IV is much closer to Z7 ii than to Z9, I think. One rumor I heard is that Z8 will be a high MP body but with stacked sensor. It won't be as fast as Z9 but if true and if you don't need 20+ FPS, it could be a nice compromise as it should still offer excellent AF coupled with blackout free EVF. However, it is only rumor so far so we will have to wait and see.
I am eagerly waiting to hear about the weight of the new 400/2.8s. I think if you use 3kg lens, Z9 make a lot of sense as it will be more comfortable to use with bigger grip. Of course you can add grip to A1 but by that time, weight won't be much of an issue. It is more of a problem when you attach say 50/1.8s, 35/1.8s etc then weight of Z9 can be a bit more annoying
With 50/1.2s, Noct 58/.95, yes, they weight a ton but much better balance and easier on the hand than using these lenses with Z7 ii.
In the end of course yes, the A1 would be the much better body. There is a cost issue though for me, and as I already have the A7RIVa, I would be more than happy to use the 600GM on that body for a few years, and give my wallet some time to recover.
The Z9 is also expensive, but I expect the cost of the 800PF to be lower than that of the Sony 600GM by appr. the amount of a Z9, and I already have the 500PF.
I would personally not be interested in a high mp Z8 for use with the PF lenses, because they don't have the very high resolving power of the classic f4 big primes. The Sigma 500/4 easily outresolves the 500PF and I expect the Sony 600GM to make sense on a very high resolution sensor like that of the A7RIVa as well. For the pf lenses though, 45mp ff is just about right, they don't really resolve any higher so more mp's would be lost.
I personally don't get the argument that big primes need big bodies. For me, the opposite is true. I can handhold a +/-3kg lens comfortably on a 700-800gr body, but not on a 1,5kg body, which the Z9 is if you include the ftz.
I don't get the balance argument either to be honest, the Sigma 500/4 is 3,3kg and it balances absolutely fine on the ungripped D500, I have zero balance issues shooting that combo handheld.
I will wait for the official 800PF announcement and then make the decision. Both options have their pros and cons I suppose. The output of the Z9 makes it a very attractive option.

That's a really nice set of a unique Spoonbill, Lance. It appears you had his attention. ;-)

Some of the preference definitely will be depending on how the camera feel in your hand.
Personally, I never like the form factor of A7r series very much and I own every itineration of A7r. I did not like it much when I used it with 50/1.4 or 85/1.4GM. Although A7r x bodies are evolving in the right direction but just not enough for me yet. They just feel uncomfortable and I mostly used A7r x bodies with small manual focus lenses which are fine and more comfortable for me than using Leica bodies for example. On the other hand, Z7 body fit my hand better and I am more comfortable with bigger heavier lens on it. However, on lenses like 500/4e FL, 600/4e FL, I find bigger body like D850 or D500 more comfortable to hold and D6/Z9 are even better. Despite the weight, the bigger grip just felt right. This is entirely personal preference though and if you are already comfortable with form factor and weight distribution of A7r IV on bigger tele lens then that's all that matters for you. A long time ago, I had D2X which I used mainly inside a housing for underwater and absolutely hated it for landuse. When I had D810, I though 70-200/2.8 was way too big and uncomfortable to use despite the excellent image that I got. Eventually, when I got 200-500/5.6 then 500/4e FL etc, suddenly gripped body just does not bother me anymore as I can deal with weight better as long as the body is comfortable to hold (not so GFX100, whoever designed GFX100 body should be dragged through dirt and left out in the sun during Bangkok's hottest month ).

What a photogenic bird, and a great series of photos! Nicely done, Lance. Photos of birds in warm places make the negative temperatures here a bit easier to tolerate.

Thank you very much, CKrueger!
The bird was in a great spot on a cloudy day with a dark background, he was nicely lit and was having a bath and doing all sorts of shenanigans. Sometimes you can be lucky.

Does anybody have trouble getting their images off the card? Every time I try to import it takes forever for Capture One to read the images and then when I start to import to a drive the card reader just gets ejected.

First time out tonight with the Z9. Tracked pretty well with the 800 5.6, but had to sometimes tap the shutter again to re-aquire focus; more likley I just need to adjust the focus tracking with lock on; I had it on 3, maybe should move it up to 5?

Which raw format are you using? I think capture one pro supports only compressed raw and not high efficiency raw formats yet. I'm able to import raw files from capture one pro.

I was using the compressed one, not HE. I didn't get anything to work in Capture One and had to import in batches and then just ended up switching to LightRoom. gannis wrote:

Any Sigma 500 F4 Sports users that already own a Z9 in here? I would love to see some pics and understand its compatibility and performance vs OEM glass.
