First test shot with the Z 100-400 with 1.4TC attached. Need better light, but that's still nice bokeh at f8. Shot was at ISO 9000 Not a cloud in the sky here for a month, and the day something new shows up...

Got my 100-400 and 2x teleconverter a couple of days ago. Been shooting with it and testing. Lens is growing on me and I have never had a 2x converter work as well on a lens as this one does.

Well I got my 100-400 yesterday, that is the good news.
The bad news is I got a bad copy, it shows image smearing at all apertures from 100-400 to varying degrees in the lower right hand corner, worse at the 100mm end. It appears as soft at 4.5-5.6 and then I stop it down to around F8 and it actually gets worse, serious smearing.
I ran it through it’s paces, three different bodies, VR on and off, filter on and off and it shows the same result.
I have a note in to NPS, will have to use it on a job this week that is not corner critical and then get a loaner until I either get a replacement or this one fixed.
Other than that, seems like it is going to be a good lens to have in the kit.

Not super promising that out of a very small sample size on FM, 2 copies have been so bad that they needed to be returned.

I probably shouldn't panic yet, I just got it two days ago, but I did notice some weird things happening with mine on Z7II (FW 1.31).
The lens is sharp as hell of the tripod with VR Off, but sometimes hand held, I get completely out of focus images, even at 1/1000, regardless focus confirmation (CAF, or SAF and VR On).
I tried electronic shutter, and mechanical (front curtain) shutter.
I tried very carefully with my left hand against the wall with ES, and I notice that focus point jumps of the point I aimed towards after trigger.
When I zoom in 100% to the image, it centers that new position, not the one I aimed to, before I pushed shutter.
Someone may think I caused it to move, but I'm pretty sure I can control steadiness.
I tried even with timer to make sure lens stabilazes before image is taken.
I need to do more testing, but that made me a bit concerned.

Candidly, something strongly suggests, as Scott mentioned, that you have some nervous fingers pressing something or ( my suspicion) that you have touched the focus ring while shooting which I think is the culprit. With the 100-400S attached to the Z7-II (I own this pair) go to custom setting A12 and disable the focus ring on the lens while in AF mode. Again, you MUST have the 100-400 lens attached to even see custom setting A12 available in the custom setup menu. I think this is your problem. If it is, then you need to be aware that your grip on the lens can accidentally de-focus your lens unknowingly.
I understand how your problem manifests itself. Been there; done that. I don’t like a lot of buttons and ‘stuff’ active on the lens usually. Disable all of these options to work through what’s causing the problem.

I ran through the menu yesterday to try to disable it, and I skipped that option somehow.
I just did, I'll give it try tomorrow again.
Thanks for pointing out!

If you know offhand, what was the other bad sample like?
I am hoping to get a loaner from NPS and then get this one in the shop to get up to snuff, less hassle than getting a new one and hoping it is in spec. A few years back I had a badly de-centered 24mm 1.8G that I bought new and they had it back in less than a week in top shape. Here is to hoping...
