p.3 #1 · (Apparently minor) Changes in B&H Payboo Card on January 17th

Comenity has been TERRIBLE to deal with. I had locked our credit after the credit rating agencies were hacked due to their gross negligence safeguarding the personal information of over 137 million customers. We were one of many whose information was stolen and subsequently had a few identity theft attempts. Last Payboo card I had opened my credit while on phone with the previous bank running the Payboo card and had them run the credit check with Transunion on the line then immediately locked the credit again. That worked fine.
I am not a credit expert but opened up the credit for a few hours with one agency but apparently Comenity used a different one. The letter in the mail says I should unlock the credit with all three agencies for 30 days and THEN reapply. REALLY!!!!! 30 days. They must be nuts. I would be reluctant to shop elsewhere but there are other reliable places to shop just down the road.

p.3 #5 · (Apparently minor) Changes in B&H Payboo Card on January 17th

The new bank is Comenity Capital Bank of Columbus, OH. The following is an email I tried to send to B & H just yesterday to an email address THEY gave me to communicate with their executive offices but which was kicked back by the gmail system as the address couldn't be found or was unable to receive mail:

"Would you please ask someone in your executive department to call me regarding the treatment I have received from the new bank that is handling the Payboo cards, Comenity Capital Bank? I am VERY upset with the way they are handling the credit card applications. I have a near perfect credit score, 839 the last I checked through Chase Bank, and was denied a Payboo card b/c I put a freeze on access to my credit history information with the three credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

I did this for a very good reason. I was the victim (along with scores of others) of a massive data breach at Equifax several years ago, even though I had purchased a product with Equifax that was supposed to give me extra protection for my personal financial information. I was advised by Equifax that my information had been compromised, and I was advised by numerous sources to place freezes on my credit history information with all three credit reporting agencies which would force them to contact me if anyone attempted to open an account in my name. I did just that.

When B & H began its Payboo card program with Synchrony Bank of Tampa, FL, I had no problem. I believe they called me and said they needed to access my credit history, so I unlocked the freeze for 48 hours or so, they checked my credit history, and approved me for the Payboo card. I have used it extensively to make purchases from B & H over these past years that has saved me a lot in sales taxes to the State of Louisiana that I otherwise would have had to pay.

Comenity Capital Bank has been anything but easy to deal with. When I filled out the application online from the link on the B & H website and clicked submit, there was no confirmation that it had been received by them, and I got no email to that effect either. I expected they might call me to say, hey, we need to access your credit history information, can you unlock the freeze for a short window so we can check. But no, instead I got a form letter in the mail saying that I was DENIED a Payboo card because they could not access my information, and that I needed to unlock the freeze with ALL THREE credit reporting agencies for an unspecified time so they could gain access to it, and that I was INELIGIBLE to re-apply for the Payboo card until a month had passed since the date of their letter. I called several times and everyone just said that were their rules and there was nothing else that could be done. I finally spoke with a supervisor with Comenity Capital Bank named Brooke, and she was as cold as ice. They really don't care about your customers, I can assure you of that. She said they had sent me another letter in response to my first call to them, but I have not received it, and I spoke with Brooke roughly two weeks ago.

I have worked hard my whole life, have never refused to pay a bill that I rightfully owed, have never written an NSF check, paid my house off fully in 1991, raised two kids and helped them through college, and now just have my monthly living expenses. I am a retired lawyer having practiced litigation in federal and State courts for nearly 45 years, and have taken up photography as a hobby again. I have enjoyed B & H's website, its product offerings, and the general courtesy of its customer service representatives. However, I will stop making purchases if I cannot get a Payboo card without being made to feel that I am less than worthy because your new bank will not do the courtesy of simply calling me and asking me to unlock my credit freeze for a brief window so that it can verify that I am credit worthy. I am simply NOT going to do as they asked and unlock my credit freeze indefinitely for their convenience so they can take their merry time in checking me out no doubt without notifying me that I can put a freeze back into effect. MY DATA WAS BREACHED ON THE EQUIFAX SITE, and I have no idea who may have my personal financial information. I have to protect myself, and if I have to go without a Payboo card and cease doing business with B & H, I guess that's what I'll do. You can help though by contacting Comenity Capital Bank and telling them to be fair and reasonable with your regular customers or you are going to start losing business. You can ask them to contact applicants for the Payboo card by phone who have placed freezes on their credit history so the applicants can unlock the freezes for a brief, reasonable period of time so Comenity can check their creditworthiness without jeopardizing the applicant's credit information that may have been previously breached in order to prevent unauthorized accounts being opened in that applicant's name. I can't be the only one of your customers who has experienced this issue with Comenity Bank. I had no such issue with Synchrony Bank when I applied for the Payboo card with it.

Please forward this on to Mr. Jeffrey Gerstel or someone with authority in your executive offices to respond to me. Thank you.

Respectfully,"

So, I contacted B & H by phone yesterday on February 16, 2022, and spoke at length with a representative in their executive offices, and she gave me the email address xxxxx, and guess what, the email did not go through. So, I'm done with doing business with B & H for now. So, be careful of dealing with Comenity Capital Bank. I suspect that their relationship with B & H will be short.

Mr. Posner: Please see my reply on this topic regarding B & H's new bank, Comenity Capital Bank. I called B & H yesterday to get a good email address to send my detailing of my experience with Comenity to your executive offices, and the email address I got was kicked back by the gmail system as undeliverable. So, perhaps you can cut and paste my message posted on this forum and send it to the people in charge with B & H. I will not be purchasing any more camera gear from B & H as its Payboo program is now a joke. Comenity Capital Bank is treating B & H's customers rudely and unprofessionally. My experience is a testament to that. Regards,

Hell, I just use my Apple Card and get an immediate 2% back. I deduct the rest on my business income tax. Of course until Brandon does away with that option. Good luck in your quest, Frank, you're gonna need it. And good as Mr. Posner is - and IMHO he is - he can't be of any help to you (though I remain hopeful that he will).

+1 for some issues with Comenity, the application process is really difficult. Still haven't received a response after 10 days. When I called this morning, I was told there is nothing that I can do at the moment, just wait for a response in the mail. I have no idea why there is a problem, I have a good credit history.

The process to get the previous Payboo card with Synchrony bank was very smooth. Not sure I want to fight to get the new card, I may just end giving up on ordering from B&H. (wanted to order the Sony 70-200 GM II with the new Payboo card)

The Comenity switch has been extremely disappointing for me. I know I'm a small-time customer with B&H (only spent ~$20k with B&H in 2021) but they're already losing a big chunk of my business due to this switch. I had a large enough credit line with Synchrony to buy high-end equipment and then pay it off in full each month.

Right now the credit limit with Comenity is so low that I barely managed to pre-order my new Mac Studio with my Payboo card (that's with no consumer debt, an 800+ FICO score and a 99th percentile annual income). Now I go and try and buy $500 worth of ND filters and a few other items and I can't even do that because the card is maxed out from the pre-order. I've requested a credit limit increase, they sent a secure message saying I already had a recent increase.. which they must confuse with just opening an account...

I have zero incentive to purchase at B&H without PayBoo.. I get 5% cash back at Amazon, so will just continue to do that. Really frustrating, as I like B&H and enjoyed supporting someone other than Amazon, but at this point they've just shot themselves in the foot with this Comenity partnership.

I am very sorry you're dissatisfied with the Comenity but this statement is what really disturbed me. After all this time I wouldn't think I'd need a list of reasons why someone would want to keep B&H at the top of their list of go-to retailers. Brnadon, I am sorry we seem to have failed you.

Thanks for the response, Henry. I didn't intend to disturb you, but just sharing my viewpoint. I'm truly not clear on what value B&H provides to customers sitting at home in the context of other ecommerce retailers in the space.

It seems like from barrage of "This is a real B&H Customer Story.." YouTube ads that the proposed value may be rooted in experience and knowledge with the products.. but I'd question if that's a tangible value to customers who don't come to NY? I don't call B&H and ask questions about products, I use YouTube, Google, read reviews, etc.. I don't think that "we have a lot of experience" value really translates too well outside the context of an in-person experience.

If the value is catalog depth, I'd suggest Adorama and Amazon combine to match that pretty easily,..

I appreciate that B&H offers overnight shipping, which I typically use, but not sure if that's much of a differentiator.

I trust B&H more than Amazon with respect to counterfeit products, but that trust and my purchasing decision is always devalued a bit by the less-than-flexible return policy.

The clear value and differentiator for me was PayBoo.. I could quantify and easily stack that benefit up against purchasing elsewhere, and B&H almost always came out on top. But now that Comenity has significantly diminished that value for me, there is truly not much to incentivize me to use B&H.

Now, like I said, I'm just small time @ $20k a year, very possible I'm not the target customer and that's fine... but if I am a target customer, then I'd suggest there may be some dissonance between B&H's perception of customer value delivery and reality.

After all this time I wouldn't think I'd need a list of reasons why someone would want to keep B&H at the top of their list of go-to retailers.

I want to support B&H, I am a fan of the company, I want you all to succeed. But B&H cannot rely on historical perception as a marketing and customer retention strategy. Don't look at my messages here as a complaint.. look at them as a challenge. Tell me or show me why I should shop at B&H?! I am telling B&H right now, despite my positive sentiment, I do not have a reason to shop with you. What is B&H going to do to change my mind..? (That's rhetorical, not a direct question for you, Henry).

I know it may not sound like it, but I am rooting for B&H. I look forward to the Comenity situation improving and reassessing where I purchase equipment.

You're asking what distinguishes B&H from other retailers in our industry. Let me assure you I'm under no illusion. While i think we're very good I know my opinion is not objective. I know there are other very good retailers out there and each has a well deserved following. I believe that B&H combines the best features of all those others. I'm reluctant to dislocate my shoulder patting myself on the back. We have the best trained, best informed, most experienced sales staff and by experienced, I do not mean they're terrific sales people, although they are. Most of them are also experienced photographers, videographers, audio specialists, video and audio editors, and so on. For just about any specialty there's someone here who knows most of what there is to know. For the products we carry, there's often more than one person who knows the brand, its competition, subtle distinctions, accessories, and so on. And they're free to offer advice and do so without a care if the advice benefits them, as long as it benefits you. We don't pay commissions and there's a reason. Because many of our people make or made a living in the industry, many know brand managers, tech specialists, and how brands fit into the marketplace. They have access to our buyers which gives them access to a broad base of knowledge and a range of assistance not readily available to individual customers. Just one example. A customer bought a Sony dlsr a couple of years ago. It stopped working recently. The Sony warranty and our return policy expired. Because we reached out to Sony the camera owner will get warranty service or a replacement even though contractually he is not entitled to either. Why? Because we took it upon ourself to ask and our relationship with Sony USA is soo good they were willing to help. We sponsor professional photographers, professional organizations, trade shows, etc. And, what other retailer provides access to someone like me? I know I'm not the biggest deal in the playground, but I do think in general access to me benefits you. Possibly I am mistaken about that. I lave it to you.

What a shame that purchaser <ketang> cannot have a similar outcome as did this customer. I have since quit my affiliation with BH. Too many other genuine dealers out there who "step up" and "fess up" when they've "screwed up," and, by all reasonable accounts, BH has failed even to "get up." I"ll no longer spend a dime with your company.

I wonder who will be the new bank. I gave up the Payboo card a long time ago because I heard so much negativity about Synchrony Bank. Even the name "Payboo" is annoying at best. When I need to take out a loan, I use https://hurtigudbetaling.dk/ , and there you can choose different interest rates from different lenders. Recently, I wanted to return the Payboo card and called the operator to find out some details of the new card, so they still don't know how the whole system will work, and I changed my mind about returning to this card.

The bank which administers the new Payboo program is Comenity Capital Bank. There is more on the new program on our site at https://www.bhphotovideo.com/credit-cards.

You do not have to return a Payboo card from the original Synchrony program. That program is no longer in operation. More on that at https://www.bhphotovideo.com/credit-cards/SYF-FAQs. If you have unanswered questions please email bhcardoffers @ bhphoto.com

I think it’s a real shame that the bank is now Comenity. While being far from a 1%er in terms of income/assets I am apparently a 1%er in FICO/TransUnion numbers but that isn’t good enough for Comenity.

My dealings with B&H have been excellent thus far but this has affected my purchasing habits significantly. 100% of my camera/computer dollars have gone elsewhere since the changeover.

When I applied for the new card, I got a message from Comenity "your application will be reviewed, and you will get a mail " with no other info. I tried again a week or 2 later, with the same result. Then got several mails a few weeks later saying because I had a lock on my credit report, they couldn't proceed. Have to wait at least 1 month to re-apply, after reception of the last mail ...
Would have been a lot easier to tell me this right away when I entered my contact information. It takes me 2min to unfreeze my credit reports. I was going to order 2 lenses from B&H when I applied. Bought one of them from another vendor because of that, and missed when B&H had the 70-200GM II in stock recently.
