p.1 #1 · (Apparently minor) Changes in B&H Payboo Card on January 17th

I received the following email from B&H regarding a new card issuer and other changes for Payboo beginning January 17th, 2022.

B&H
Dear Valued Customer,

In May 2019, B&H introduced our Payboo® loyalty program credit card that offers the unique and unparalleled “Save the Tax” instant benefit on every eligible purchase made with the card. Two and a half years later, we are grateful that the Payboo® program has grown tremendously, benefitting so many of our customers, and continues to offer the most valuable loyalty benefit in our industry.

To ensure B&H’s ability to maintain this great loyalty benefit for our customers for the long-term, we are switching our card-issuing bank partner. While this change will require some action by our customers, the good news is that our unique offer of an instant reward equivalent to the sales tax customers pay will remain unchanged in eligible states.

We will be launching a new and improved Payboo® Card in mid-January 2022. The ‘new’ Payboo® Card will provide the same “Save the Tax” instant benefit you currently receive plus, based on customer feedback, we are adding the option to choose promotional financing for most transactions (cardholders will be able to choose either the “Save the Tax” benefit or the promotional financing, but not both).

What does this mean for your current Payboo® Card?

Your current Payboo® Card, issued by Synchrony Bank, will be valid for use with the “Save the Tax” instant benefit until January 17, 2022
You will receive a notice from Synchrony Bank soon stating that your current Payboo® Card will no longer be usable for new B&H purchases after January 17, 2022. (Please continue to manage your current account and pay off any outstanding balances in accordance with the terms and conditions)
When we launch our new Payboo® Card in mid-January, we will email you sharing the terms of the new program, including the same “Save the Tax” benefit plus the promotional financing options. This information will also be available on our website, in the B&H NYC SuperStore, and by phone
While we regret the inconvenience, customers will have to complete a credit application to apply for the new Payboo® Card. Once approved, customers will be able to use the new account right away and continue to enjoy the Payboo® benefits
The Payboo® loyalty program has become a key ingredient of the B&H shopping experience and has earned tremendous acceptance among our customers. We are pleased that with the introduction of the new Payboo® Card, we will continue to offer the same “Save the Tax” benefit into the future, though programs like this are always subject to change.

Again, we regret the inconvenience of having to apply for a new credit card, but we believe the new Payboo® Card will result in greater payment flexibility, ease of account management, and excellent service, while allowing us to continue offering the “Save the Tax” benefit. If you have questions, please email us at [email protected].

If you also have a B&H Financing Card, you will receive a separate letter advising that your account will remain available for new B&H orders until January 17, 2022, and will no longer be accepted for new purchases thereafter.

And YES, the name will still be Payboo®!

Thank you,

Jeffrey Gerstel,
Chief Marketing Officer

The question is if applying for the new PayBoo card will show up as a hard inquiry on your credit history. If the answer is yes, I will just let my PayBoo expire and apply for it when I need to purchase something from BH in the future. No need to get a new card immediately. "Once approved" wording seems to imply that it will just be like applying for a brand-new CC.

It's been a wonderful year and a half on PayBoo. Easily Saved over $500 in taxes. 10.25% sales taxes in Chicago makes it a no brainer IMO.

Second the sentiment about applying for a new card. Since they're switching issuing banks from Synchrony to _____, I suspect it will be a new account and hard pull on the ol' credit file.

While this would stink for those getting another hard pull because they're changing issuers, I try to avoid any Synchrony issued cards so this is a welcome change.

I work in banking. It is absolutely an application, hard inquiry, and subject to approval.

Yep. I'll wait until I "need" it. I was unhappy in the extreme with the hoop jumping needed for the Synchrony card. It was slow, it was excessively intrusive, the attempts to capture facial images, etc., were awkward on phone cam, etc.

I'm anxious to find out who the new bank is. I had passed on the Payboo card because I've heard so many negative things about Synchrony Bank.

I’m just gonna let mine lapse. I’ve had less than stellar experiences with B&H as of late.

Even though the name “Payboo” is cringeworthy at best I ain’t mad at saving 10.25% on purchases.

I wonder what happens to a rather large credit I have on my card.

And if you return an item after Christmas will they just give you a B&H gift card

Edit: I wrote them to see what they'll do. I'll let you know what they say.

This isn't as minor as they put it. A new hard pull for another credit card. I am just hoping they don't go with a bank that is stingy with limits. Some banks just give crap limits, I mean we have lenses that are 15k a pop.

I don't expect Synchrony to just close all those accounts, they'll probably just convert them over to some generic card that they offer so that you will hopefully continue to use it.

This is actually an issue for any backorders that aren't sent out before the Jan 17 changeover. I talked to someone at B&H Customer Service and they said if the backorder doesn't ship before the change you would need to call to have the order changed to a new payment method so that the payment doesn't fail. Alternatively you could also arrange to prepay the order on your current Payboo card by calling.

What's concerning, is that I called, asked them the same question, they "checked" and told me the opposite of what you were told
I.e., that for orders place before 1/17 things will be the same (will charge old card and get sales tax back) even if order ships after 1/17.
I will call and talk to a supervisor next week and update this thread.

Ugh. I don't like the conflicting responses Perhaps they don't have this worked out yet...

It's possible it will depend on if the authorization is still valid. In my case the authorization has expired.

I'll look forward to seeing what you find out. I had also sent the question to the person referenced in the email. I'll post if I get a response.

It will affect your credit score (at least transiently) if you apply for the new card as mentioned it requires an application for additional credit. It is still worth the savings for me.

I have been a mortgage banker for 25 years and am intimately aware of the results of credit pulls. Unless you are in the middle of buying a home and don't want to do a little extra paperwork to show the closing of one card and opening of another it is basically a non issue. A single hard pull does next to nothing to your credit. What will actually cause your credit score to temporarily go down a bit more is the opening of a new account. But the effects of that are temporary. Like most things it is part of the cost of doing business. If you want to continue to save the tax then get your credit pulled one time and go one with your life. I will not even consider worrying about it. I will close the old card and open a new one as soon as I receive the offer. I spent more than $8,000 at B&H this year and did not pay a penny in tax despite living in New York City. So that has saved me over $700 this year using my payboo card. Getting the new account is a no brainer for me despite the credit pull and the opening of a new account.

I just received emails from B&H and Synchrony regarding back orders. They are both similar. Here is the one from B&H.

All orders placed on or before Jan 17, 2022, including pre-orders or backorders, but are not yet charged will process to your existing account through March 31, 2022. If any orders placed on or before Jan 17 are still outstanding in March, we will contact you regarding available payment options should your item(s) not ship by March 31. Rest assured you will not lose you position on the backorder priority.

Thank you,

Your B&H Credit Card Team
