I think all these big lenses are hard to find these days. Many month waits are the norm. I know two people who have orders in for the Nikon 400S. One of them is local so I may get to see it in person. I'm not ordering one. Too expensive to just add to my 600GM. I'm not prepared to sell my 600GM for this lens especially after comparing Z9 to A1 AF
I was wondering if your 600GM might start to feel neglected!
I won't be getting one either, I don't even have a Z9 yet....
I cannot imagine it would give you much over the A1+600GM combo, but perhaps the Nikon Z telephoto lenses will set a new bench mark for optical performance, you never know..
The only thing that has me waiting for a Z9 to become available, is the coming Z800 pf.
My intention is to use a Z9 with the two pf lenses, 500 and 800, and sell the Sigma because of the weight penalty with the Z9.

That is my final answer about the 400S....you can read what you like into the latter part
I still want some time to test the Z9 in sunlight before I write anything too definitive about my early impressions....stay tuned next week (if I get the opportunities I need this weekend)....

Thanks for the info Daran.
I took a look at the video. I like the Matt admitted he made an error. And owned up to it.
I kind of blame Nikon too though. Seems like the marketing department wanted something to brag about with the firmware release. This maximum buffer depth requires very specific settings. Settings that most people wouldn’t use in normal shooting. I’m glad it’s all true. But seems kinda of an odd thing to brag about. It’s not like Nikon needs to boost sales or anything! 😉
As far as the Atomos affecting AF performance. Looks like Matt was just thinking out loud that perhaps that his other videos may have been affected by using the Atomos. I’d be interested to see him test that. But at this point, pretty speculative.
And yet, I’ve seen this repeated by quite a few people as fact. I’m not talking about you. You made it clear that the Atomos “might” affect AF performance. But I’ve seen more than one person say it’s why the Nikon struggled in certain segments of Jared Polin’s video.
I shouldn’t be surprised though. It’s the internet! 😀
Anyways, I appreciate the information.

I don’t know about the Z9, but atomos definitely affects the AF performance of Z6ii.

Hmm, I wasn't aware Z9 does not offer variable shutter. This seems like something that should be added via firmware update, as there is no mechanical shutter to fall back on...
According to Ricci (Nikon employee, “Ricci Talks” on YouTube) the Z9 does variable shutter in background when anti flicker is on, it’s just not shown. Idk why they hide that and are transparent about effective aperture with macro lenses.

nikon told dpr that it's only effective in the same(100-120hz?) frequency range as it would be with a mechanical shutter.

That would be great, because IMHO that's the way variable shutter should work (automatically). However, I doubt it because the marketing would be boasting about it normally ... so I'm more inclined to think it works like "regular" anti-flicker (as described in the post above). It's not that hard to test though so I hope someone can confirm it soon.

people shouldn't have to watch youtube to get unofficial z9 specs from backdoor channels, or in the case of dpr, rb refused to name the nikon employee that he spoke with, and in fact he argued that his anonymous source is just as valid as reading the info in the nikon manual... like everyone is going to read dpr article comment sections, it's a bunch of fake accounts that are constantly trolling sony.
another example... sony and canon both have 30fps lens compatibility lists, and while the canon version was half-backed at least they put something out there, has anyone seen a z9 30fps lens list?
Conflicting info, eh? Yeah I don’t know why they wouldn’t mention it if it was in fact built in. Not even in the manual. Probably best to assume it’s not there and hope fw update addresses it.

Once again just reaffirmed how happy I am to have the A1 with it's 240fps video, 30fps RAW and AF system that hardly misses a beat and all without needing a monster lens - not withstanding the cost I think tracking these guys with such a big fixed focal length lens would be next to impossible for me. I find zooming out is critical in order to first acquire or reacquire focus. I think I must spend 4 hours or so waiting for things to happen and can't image doing so with heavier equipment.
Some images can also be found in the 200-600G thread.
p.26 #11 · "Nikon Z9 vs Sony A1 – The 10 main differences"
Yeah, the lack of 240fps would require me to keep the A1...makes switching to Nikon (which I'd consider doing just for the lenses) problematic for me. I really do like the Z9, large body and all, but other than the Z-lenses, it appears to come up short against the A1 ex the video animal/bird eye-AF which the A1 sorely needs.
As an aside, what I'm really wrestling with now is whether to buy into the FX6 for the Picture Cache (v2.0 firmware) and built-in ND's. Hummm...

I’m also pleased to see that Nikon showed ‘balls’ by doing a few things Sony hasn’t done yet, like getting rid of the mechanical shutter, incorporating 8K 60P RAW, and even just adding the flexible Apple Prores codec. All these changes show they’ve been thinking a lot about how to give users the best quality possibility, but also flexibility.
Leaving off the mechanical shutter concerns me on a camera aimed at Photojournalists. Just about every indoor location today is illuminated by a jumbled mess of Amazon/Home Depot sourced crappy/flickering LED lights. Nothing easier than a good old mechanical shutter in such environments, virtually impossible to dial-in that electronic shutter when in close quarter combat with a bunch of hungry paparazzi.
