Hmm, I wasn't aware Z9 does not offer variable shutter. This seems like something that should be added via firmware update, as there is no mechanical shutter to fall back on...

Makes it a complete non starter for me. Won't go back to Nikon anyway. I am starting to look at the A1 more seriously though

BTW all this crap about dropping is truly pathetic. Dont drop the damn thing to begin with. Seriously it all depends on where it actually hits is what counts

"Perhaps Geoff can test with his?"
This looks like the only way this question can be resolved. Geoff (a.k.a. Arbitrage) should run a series of drop tests with his A1 and Z9 to see how they each fare.
He can then file his report here. That will definitively settle this issue and everybody's happy.
Edit: I suggest running the BIF AF test prior to conducting the drop tests.
Even after Geoff does the drop test , people will argue about what angle, what was the windspeed, did it hit the hard part of the ground or soft part of the concrete. It will never end! Just use the camera and if you drop it, access the damage, fix it or replace it. if you had camera for more than couple of years, its time to replace it because new technology is already has made you camera ancient.
Hope people stop this and spend more time to photograph with whatever camera you have. its the photographer not the camera. Sorry camera can make your life easier but it want replace your skill.

I agree, that for me the size of the Z9 is too much. However, put that technology in a reduced size Z8 and you have a big time winner.

Let me put it this way, I have small hands and am starting to show some wear and tear as I have aged. In no way would I ever consider the size and weight of the Nikon Z9. No question for me, the only option would be the A1.

I think it's good for us all that Sony, Nikon and Canon are producing such amazing cameras. For me I do not need the A1 but I am hoping for a new A9. Having said that I will only buy it if the sensor is an improvement and not just in MP. It's the most disappointing thing about the A7iv, the sensor is no better than the A7iii other than MP. The camera is a big improvement in handling but im not sure that leap will be made with a new A9 considering the A9II has the newer bigger body already.

Recently I have been doing a lot of HSS Flash photography. So correct me if I'm wrong, but the Z9 wouldn't be able to do this any HSS, or even Hypersync.

How about that 400/2.8 TC coming in at 14,000? Somehow I anticipate theyll be even harder to find than the 600 GM
Brilliant move on Nikon part I say. Though given the current situation (and from the past experience), this lens won't be widely available for a long while.

I think all these big lenses are hard to find these days. Many month waits are the norm. I know two people who have orders in for the Nikon 400S. One of them is local so I may get to see it in person. I'm not ordering one. Too expensive to just add to my 600GM. I'm not prepared to sell my 600GM for this lens especially after comparing Z9 to A1 AF

Im convinced they are making about a dozen 600s a year.
