There was a question on this thread earlier regarding using the GM with an achromatic polarizer. Here's a shot of a bumblebee in my front yard from a few weeks ago

Just got my hands on this long awaited marvel of a lens.
First outing with it had to involve some kind of aviation spotting...(plus a bonus forest picture).

This is a superb result. How much did this filter set you back? Seems like a perfect match for close-up work.

I disagree. The 70-200 is a superb landscape lense, always has been. It is definitely sharper than the 100400GM, especially into the corners. Also the 100400 falls short for birding, 400mm is too short 90 percent of the time. Most are probably better off with a 70-200 and 200-600 in my opinion. Comparing the 100400 with 200600 and f5.6 vs 6.3 is only 1/3rd of a stop which is insignificant. Add the 1.4tc to the 100400 and now your at f8 @560mm with degraded IQ, sharpness suffers with vignetting, where the 200600 bare will outperform it @600mm f6.3. And yes I have owned the 100400GM twice, and sold it because the 200600 replaced it for me. So I know the lens abilities having had more than one copy. The new 70-200GM MKii with 1.4tc gets me the reach I need when shooting landscapes and anything else I'd shoot with such a lense, the exception is wildlife where I'd much rather use the 200600, because with birding you can never have enough reach. Very different lenses, each excelling at different situations. Personally, I would never give up a 70-200 2.8, too many uses. It's truly a swiss army knife if there is one, and pairs beautifuly with the 200600G. Not saying the 100400GM isn't a good lense, because it is.. but too often I see comparison between the 70-200 2.8 vs 100400 5.6 which are vastly different lenses with some focal length overlap. One is 2 stops faster with shorter focal length , one has more reach but is 2 full stops slower. Pick what work's for your style of shooting

I just got one and I can confidently say that my existing 100-400GM is never going to be de-throned as my main wildlife and landscape lens. The 70-200 is more a photojournalism lens and, while good wide open (where mine will remain 90% of the time), probably won't hold a candle to the 135GM at f/2-2.8

What's the consensus of this lens in terms of portrait rendering? I had the first version and it was good, not great. 135GM too contrast for my tastes. Currently use the 85gm and SAL 135 1.8 but could really use a good 70-200 for weddings/events that doubles as a top notch portrait lens too.

Its extremely sharp, but holds up well to frequency separation and post processing to give good portraits.
If you are looking for "character", like with a 200 f/2 or 105 f/1.4, you may not find it. All I know is .. its an awesome lens for most shooting.

It works with rockets too ! From a beach in NC (~400 miles away from Cape Canaveral, Falcon 9 launch). I wasn't prepared to see this, just quickly grabbed the camera(a7riii) + 70-200 GMII, set it to 200mm f/2.8 and let the camera do the rest to capture a few shots and videos.

@Maxxus46 - oh sorry - I missed this! The filter is a Nisi achromatic maginifier and is $150 from B&H, but recently the local Boston based chain Hunt's Photo and Video has had it for $120. 🤦🏻♂️ I'm embarrassed because I buy all my glass from Hunt's and usually buy tripods, ND filters and CP filters online.
