Where did you guys order from? I did just like last time at B&H with the 105/50 macros at about 6 am on the first day. Still getting stuck with backorder status.

Same here. I just figure the whole production distribution system just isn’t what it was pre-COVID.

I have included some more testshots in the same album mid distance, also with the Z35. https://flic.kr/s/aHsmWS62ZG
There is some WB difference between two, but I would say that 40mm is sharper and punchier than 35mm.
The 40mm F2 is going to be very popular lens, it looks like, it's a very good performer.
Thanks for posting those!
Thank you for these, very informative and moreover count me impressed! The 40 looks every bit as sharp as the 35 which is frankly a surprise... It does appear slightly cooler rendering than the 35, but that's easily correctable. The falloff and bokeh are quite pleasant as well. All in all I am impressed, it appears a winner and I can't wait to mine!
Went to our local camera store to rent a Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM to test it out. And ... they had 1 Nikon z 40mm f/2 in stock .. just 1, that arrived 2 hours ago. Bought it of course, so Imma spend a few hours today and tomorrow, comparing the 2. 😬😬
Got a shipping notification from Calumet yesterday so mine should be here soon. Been looking forward to this thing since it first showed up on the road map so it's been a while.
Comparing the 40 f/2 images to ones from a much more expensive lens, I am really disappointed.
They're all soft at f/2 on my z7ii, while the other lens (different brand, but it doesn't matter here) is sharp even at f/1.4.
I'll try the lens on my less demanding z6ii later today. If it's still soft, I will return it tomorrow.
It's not front or back focus, but just soft.
These were with the camera fully resting on the ground.
f/2
f/4
f/8
f/2 - again, camera fully resting on a stone wall
f/5
Compared to a much more expensive 35mm f/1.4 .. both handheld
35mm f/1.4 handheld at f/1.4

Your 40 f2 has “glow” (spherical aberration) wide open. I’ve seen other 40 f2 samples and they are crisp wide open. Try shooting a different subject, different light, and distances and see if there are any improvements. If not, personally I’d return it and get another sample.
I had better luck on the z6ii .. although I did not shoot the same type of subject as I did with the z7ii.
Enlisted my girlfriend to model for an hour (that's her limit these days before she gives me "the look"), testing the 40 f/2 and a 35 f/1.4 this evening.
Joseph .. you're probably right. The store only has 1 lens in stock, so I may return it and wait a bit for a better copy.
At f/2, handheld and processed
On the z7ii .. other subjects, as Joseph mentioned above

I don't think it's your copy or Z6 vs Z7, but rather the performance at close focus distance. Many lenses are soft / show spherical aberrations at close distance wide open. Seems like the lens is optimized for longer distances.
Picking up my copy later today & will test my hypothesis over the weekend
Maybe so, or maybe a bad copy. Looking forward to your tests at close focus distance wide open.
