Here's hoping the 7IV has 8K25p and 4K60p (in FF) but I'm betting it will have neither.

Smaller yes, lighter, not by much but yes, but really the only difference in weight is the mirror box, no?

Yes, most certainly so. A huge amount of mirrorless marketing has been focused on 'smallest/lightest' cameras, including most recently the A7C (which is the smallest FE camera but not the lightest, the original A7 holds that crown).

That said, the push for decent grip designs and better handling, as well as video record time (ie cooling) are the main drivers in size gains, small is a tradeoff against nice grips for a given mount diameter, and bigger generally means heavier. Adding extra sensor cooling also adds size/weight.

Adding IBIS has also added to the weight as can be seen by the big weight jump between the A7r and A7R2.

Agreed, I was mostly skipping over that because that happened so long ago and we're still seeing regular increases in weight after that.

If the rumors of 33mp sensor are correct then it will not support 8k.

Anyone expecting 8K will be disappointed. Not going to happen, especially at this pricepoint. Next 8K camera from Sony will likely be the A7RV.

4K60p on the other hand is likely, it's a good iteration over the current competition (which do 4k60p with crop, yes even the R6 is 1.07x crop) and the higher-MP sensor means that it probably can be done FF like the Z7II does.

The FCC and many a local off air TV station haven't even perfected 1080P HD yet! Sure I have a 4K TV (Sony of course!) but many of my local off air channels are still at 720P and 1080i. Some are still at 480P! Anyway. 8K is not going to happen in the A7IV. Time to wake up to reality. And it won't be a perfect 4K either.

Impossible to offer 8K from 33MP 3:2 sensor. The best this camera can offer is ~6.7K 4K60p will only be in super35 crop mode. Now way are they putting 8K in a entry level FF even if it had the requisite 39MP. A7RV might get it given the Canon R5 has it.

So quite disappointing if true about the 4K60.

Do we know it's getting a 33mp sensor or is that another sorry SAR rumour?

There's a patent from 2018 out there that states that there's a 36MP sensor out there with 33.2MP (technically enough for 8K) available for video output. That's about all we have and SAR decided to run with that I think. https://photorumors.com/2018/12/01/new-sony-imx435aqj-sensor-with-36mp-and-8k-video/
It's certainly possible that this IMX435AQJ will be in the A7IV, but nobody really knows.

Nobody knows what SAR is up to these days:

Why people bother themselves with that sure is beyond me, but each to their own I guess.

8K is probably unlikely, but since it's almost 10 years since the first 8K camera and since phones have 8K resolution, I thought it might be a possibility.

I just wish it came in at 1999. But there's no way.

Well the Sony teaser on YouTube reveled tags used by Sony that could be the specs based on SonyAlphaRumors

I'd personally be quite surprised if it turns out to be a maximum of 10 fps in all modes. The A7III already has that. It really would be the Achilles heel for the camera compared to some of the competition.
We'll see I suppose!

I guess for an entry level camera, do very many photographers need more than 10fps. If so, Sony already has the A9 and A1.

The A7 is an entry level full frame camera. 10 is just fine and the industry standard for this spot in the market.

I actually wouldn’t be surprised if it’s 10fps.

The A1’s mechanical shutter is 10fps. My guess is Sony will use the same shutter mechanism to cut down on costs.

I doubt the same shutter very much. The A1 shutter is very robust with long life and also a higher sync speed I think 1/400

Nothing on the A1 will get down to this level is my bet

Personally I don't really see the appeal of this new A7IV (at least for photos). It is a nice evolution from the A7III but nothing ground breaking. If it comes in at ~2.5k, then I would rather get the A7RIV when it is on sale.
