I hope they move the AF assist beam it's useless where it is on Sony cameras.

What Sony needs to do is to somehow make a cheaper version of the A1 and a more highly specified version of the A7C. Either of those cameras would sell extremely well and would serve real purposes for photographers.

An A9III with 33MP and a A7cR with 61MP would end up costing me a lot of money...

So here is a chance for all accessories manufacturers to make a little add on piece with fiber optics that links the AF-assist light from the current lamp over some small stick that sits in the flash shoe to project out at a better place.

Thats true, forgot about the a7C, but that 3 year old tech. Im not so sure about the rumors, if they are true, who's ever going to buy an a7S III again? Dont think Sony is that dumb. Id be fine with a new sensor, 4K 30p with no crop and better IBIS for a slight price increase. $500 is way too much.

and at least the a7III is better suited for professional work with the dual card slots and joystick, the a7c is not an option for working photographers that got into the a7III for its affordability, it doesn't make sense to me either, seems like a bad move

hope the 2500 price is about euros, that accounts for VAT, so the real msrp could be below 2300 USD

Looks like the A7IV will only offer 4K60p from super35 crop, showing sensor scan speed won't be anything special. Maybe 1/30-1/50s. It would require 1/60s minimum to do 4K60p from FF without line skipping/pixel binning. Now it might do 4K60 with line skipping, but they say it will offer 4K60p from oversampled 4.8K super35, whihc will be high quality. No mention of lower quality 4K60 from FF.

I wonder if the A7IV will have gyro data stabilization like my previous A7C which I sold in anticipation of the A7IV. Not a huge deal if not however once in a while I used it with the A7C.

I think it will. Not having Gyro would be a miss - this will become mainstream camera for a lot of people and best way to test improvements in Gyro would be to add in this camera. I am sure many are counting on it.

(btw my first post here..just been a reader, but now that I am in the same boat - couldn't stop myself from posting..hopefully i will be more active participant/contributor in future)

Welcome! It's always great to see more posters, and especially from around the world! I agree with you, the A7IV is the benchmark camera. If they don't include certain tech already present in other bodies they are shooting themselves in the foot.

Remember, the A7IV isn't Sony's benchmark camera, its Sony's high volume consumer/amateur camera. The A7 is deliberately limited vs the higher-end bodies to meet the price point.

BTW, the A7's have had gyro's since the A7II. IBIS requires them. What they don't do is write gyro data to the image/video metadata.

Sony's strong point, at least for video (over canon) is less overheating than Canon, easier to process codecs, and longer recording times. Canon IBIS is better, and combined with OIS even better. R6 has 4K 60, CLOG3, Flip Screen - but overheating beyond a time. Sony, in mind, will not make a mistake to not include Gyro data in the files. Speculations can be fun though, so we will see

It will likely end up being the bread and butter of a lot of photographers, and considering Hybrid nature of work now a days picking up (video, photo) combined - Gyro makes a lot of sense. I know many photographers who have already or about to put up their A7 III for sale as soon as the IV becomes available.

From SonyRumors

I have been told the A7IV has basically the same A7SIII body. It means it also has the same heatsink and a HDMI type A port and can take both UHS-II SD-cards and CF Xpress A cards

Sony A7IV rumored specs:

launch in October (if chip supply permits this)
Newly developed 33MP sensor
4k30 video is oversampled from 7K
5.5 stops of IBIS (+ AS)
Same A7sIII body design
Full size HDMi
UHS-II SD-cards and CF Xpress cards

https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/rumor-sony-a7iv-a7siii-body-and-same-a7siii-heatsink/

In reality, it needs all these specs to get back in the front of the line - for Sony users and competitive purposes. These are present day expectations on all brands now. Sony can’t afford to fool around with a half baked upgrade. The a7IV is their ‘conversion’ camera to pull in the new users. And keep the older ones as well.

$2500 for an entry level camera and a $500 price increase over the previous model? Anyone else think both of these are huge mistakes? Let’s be honest, the biggest reason for the a7III success was its magic $1999 price point. I cannot think of another camera where the successor was $500 more expensive. Fuji and Hasselblad are actually making their updates better and LOWERING prices. Sony is sure getting greedy these days.

For what it is/was at release, the $1999 price tags was a fair one. If they include the specs being rumored, a $2500 is also a fair price tag.

This is where I am also, but also I'm thinking why not go for a lightly used A7rIV for around the same price? There are some minor differences, but for stills shooting primarily, I'm not seeing anything that would be better in the rumored specs. Unless you view the large files as a downside, but I greatly appreciated going from 24MP to 42MP when I got the A7rII. Perhaps I'd downgrade in this area is for a smaller body or stacked sensor. I'm hoping that Sony will surprise us with something that makes the A7IV more interesting than what we've
...Show more

That is exactly what I did - just bought a LN a7r4 for the price of a new a7III, instead of going for the new a7IV model. More megapixels for the dollar and a superbly performing camera. You can do even better with a used a7r3 for less. I have both bodies (and with a new pair of 128GB UHS II V60 cards in the a7r4), they provide than enough in performance for me.

It is adding up over generations and while each individual increase maybe small the total increase is substantial:

A7: 474g
A7II: 599g
A7III: 650g
A7IV: 700g?

Also the Sony A7x bodies are smaller compared to other bodies of similar weight and that makes them feel even heavier.

Agree and not really a welcome trend. It is becoming as heavy as old-time DSLRs. Hopefully, A7CII doesn't go with this trend.

Also wondering why full-size HDMI is needed.

A lot of people seem to forget this. Some are even saying that it's a bad business move to use the "cripple hammer". I'm sure they'll show us their disappointment when their A1 topping wishlists don't come true.
The A7IV will be a serious upgrade, and there will be long waiting lists to buy it, no matter how hard Sony limits its features.

Were mirrorless cameras ever promised to be significantly lighter than DSLR's?

Smaller yes, lighter, not by much but yes, but really the only difference in weight is the mirror box, no?

With the release of the A7IV a week away Sony is warning that they are expecting shortages for some other products:
https://www.sony.jp/ichigan/info2/20211012.html

"[Main products that take time to deliver]
Digital single-lens camera: α7S III / α7 II series / α6400 series / α6100 series / ZV-E10 series
Digital single-lens camera Interchangeable lens: SEL20F18G / SEL50F18F / SEL50M28 / SELP18105 etc.
Professional camcorder: PXW-Z190"

I'm guessing that they'll prioritize the A7IV over those other products mentioned?
