Ha! I'll keep one D500 and my 500pf will be for the Z9 if i get one. I'd honestly prefer a Z900 like when the D5 and D500 was released. Save the money and keep the reach I'm used to with the D500. But if not, Z9 here i come, i think 😁
Z900 is certainly possible. Consider one not so far fetch rumor is of Z8 with 80mp, it would means that using the same architecture, you can get 30+MP DX sensor. Now, I have no idea if the 80mp sensor is a stacked sensor or not, if it is, then
I don't see any reason why Z900 would not be a no brainer.
However, that is not going to be something that we will hear much about until next year at least. If Z900 is stuck with 20+MP sensor, I think Z9 in dx mode can also cover that and the only benefit of Z900 will be cost.
If track record for Nikon is to be believed, I don't think Nikon ever released a single digit D body that required firmware to fix a major bug afterward or delivered performance not suitable to professional field on launch day. Sure they will have firmware for bug fix and some improvement but they are all pretty reliable since day 1. D2H may be an exception but only from hardware side and D2X may be a bit underwhelming considering what Canon had to offer at the time.
Hardware wise, Z9 should be very competitive.
As far as I know, final firwmware for Z9 is not yet done so it seems that Nikon will be working on Z9 almost all the way upto launch date (assuming end of October). I have no knowledge of how Canon or Sony are doing things but really wonder if everything is finalized, all software and final firmwares are done weeks or months in advance of press release date or are they working pretty much all the way up to launch date as well?
As far as Nikon is being rushed, we know at least one important field testing and that was the Olympic. Somehow, I don't think that is the first outting for Z9 since it was an important event that nobody is going to be trying something completely new at an event like that. From what I heard, Nikon went in, very well prepared for the event and the result was extremely positive and they did a lot of homework for many different type of photographers but a few crucial area was left a bit neglected and they are trying to fix that now.
From what i heard, Z9 should compare very well with A1, some better some worse. One big spec that may or may not be fixed that will definitely fuel youtubers and internet discussion about the demise of Nikon and at least one other spec that shows Nikon to be ahead of the curve. Next few weeks upto the launch will be a lot of fun and probably stressful for some people at Nikon

Despite the rise of the full-frame camera for everything, I do think a Z900 would do very well. But maybe these days the price ratio between it and a Z9 won't be as huge as the ratio between the D500 and the D5, maybe due to volume or other factors.
However so far, no mirrorless manufacturer has released a mirrorless APS-C that is comparable to their full-frame action bodies so maybe Nikon could take advantage of that and be the first.

I think you and I are concerned about the very same thing. In my opinion they must wait until they get that sorted out. It will be a reputational disaster if they don't.
I think Nikon knows this. I am hoping that they wouldn't have started the teasers until it was done.

Keep my fingers cross
Not a deal breaker for me as I won't need it 99.3% of the time but it would be nice to have it.

There is no release schedule for the teasers. And I'm confident they actually have figured out how to make a two-way pivoting display.

Actually not me either. In fact, I think many of those who will use the Z9 professionally may choose to use it in that configuration anyway. That is what worries me as far as Nikon choosing to release it that way. It would just put the camera in bad light in comparison to the competition.

But at 45mpx the Z9 shot in APS-C mode will still deliver the same reach and close to the same resolution as the D500. So you functionally have close to both cameras in one.
Yeah but that Z900 will be $2500-$3000 and not $6000-$7000. When i do 90% wildlife/bif I'll keep $3k-$4k in my pocket and it makes my 500mmPFa 750mm equivalent on a crop sensor.
It's all preference. I also find i lose less IQ cropping then using a 1.4x TC on my D500 and on my D850 when i had it. Could be different on mirrorless, I'll have to revisit that.

My guess is that Z9 will be > USD 7,000 and any Z900 will be > USD 4,000.

Currently Nikon Z6II/Z7II are low cost leaders in current model FF mirrorless cameras in their respective classes. I do wonder if Nikon may keep that going and surprise the World with a $5999 Z9.

I don't see something like 20fps with full AF and AE using F Mount lenses as any kind of problem. That would mean that the F mount lenses are getting a higher frame rate on the Z9 than they did on any DSLR. That is still a big step up for the Z9.
I am actually expecting that in real World use the FPS actually achieved will vary somewhat whether its an F mount or native Z mount. This seem reasonable, and the way it is with the other systems. Not a bug in my view.
Just an example of how to turn a potential bug (offering 30fps as an option but not reliably working on all lenses) into a situation where there is "just" a partial lack of capability (which may nevertheless be fixed by a future firmware upgrade).

Would have to LMAO if an APS-c body would be $4k. No chance of that. If so, Nikon or any brand would never sell it. $3k would be pushing it
That's why I think there will be no Z900 pro DX camera.

What I'm worried about with the Z9....
1) Has Nikon stuck it out with the same selection of AF modes as seen in the current Z cameras? I really don't like the selection they are using. I much preferred the DSLR selection and lust even more after what the D6 has with customizable AF Groups (same thing the Canon R3 has now brought to it's system).
I really hope Nikon has done a total overhaul with the AF modes, bringing them more in line with the D6 but hopefully even more customizable....I can't see any reason they couldn't give a Group type mode that can be made into any shape you want (Canon R3 now does this).
If you lust after the D6 3D AF box you are going to really like the Z9. It takes this model to a new level. The best focus subject selection and acquisition, followed by the full sensor tracking of mirrorless. From what I am hearing the camera operates much more like a D6 that how the current Z camera work.

Lots of optimism for the Z9 at this point.
The AF on the D6 is outstanding...a 45 megapixel sensor, 20-30 frames per second and eye AF tracking would be the ticket for me.
Even 16 frames per second with adapted F mount lenses would save me a ton of money replacing a 24-70, 70-200 f/2.8, 200 f/2, 200-400 and 400 f/2.8.
Any improvement to an already excellent AF system and a few more frames per second would be welcomed.
