Of course it's larger than you might expect. It goes to WA FL, that's what adds the extra size. Optical design to accomodate 35-70mm range is more complex than 100mm+

If you think this is big what do you think of the 70-200 f/2.8 GM, it's much larger. Also I don't think the 35-150 will be any more than 1100g.

This is looking to be a very desirable lens.

Do we know what the filter size is yet? Really crossing my fingers for 77 instead of 82 as I’d have to replace all of my diffusion filters if I pick this beast up.

No it's still 50/50 on 77 or 82. Thou some people think they gonna go with 82 mm to keep it the same as 150-500 mm instead of having 3 different ones a cross their Sony lens line up.

That makes sense. If it’s a 77 and has good but not elite bokeh (on par with the 70-180), I’ll have a really hard time passing this up for portraits. On paper it will be amazing for indoor and outdoor shoots. Sometimes getting more different shots is just more important than having the smoothest bokeh on a fast paced shoot. I just also have three diffusion filters, polarizer, split diopter and centerfield split diopter that all see pretty regular use in my portrait work so it would add quite a bit to the cost if I need to replace the whole filter lineup.

tamron already has the 150-500, I think that's the idea. Doubt they will go 150-300 f2-2.8, it would be a massive lens.

17-35 f2-2.8 seems more likely

I really like what Tamron has been doing. would like to see them put out a lens wider than 17 - although I see how a 17-35/2-2.8 would be a great combo with this lens. I would be more interested in an 14-35/2.8-4. I would even buy a 12-36/5.6 if it was small and optically excellent.

That's a bummer, as the 150-500 is not especially impressive in terms of price to performance. It looks to be a fairly soft lens compared to the Sony 200-600 and is almost the same weight, 100mm shorter, no teleconverter use and 15fps cap and yet is only $600 cheaper.

I would love to see a 150-300 even if it was just f2.8 all the way through, maybe even f2.8-4 if the aperture stays wider than f4 for most of the way through and it kept weight and price down and had good performance.

E-Mount is severely lacking in terms of 300mm options, especially fast options. Pretty sure the best way to get there currently is at f5.6 with the 100-400, but that's hardly a great option for low light.

So on SAR I said weight probably 1000g and it looks like it's coming in at 980g. Very impressive if that's true. Now what about price: I'm thinking $1499. Also glad it's 82mm filters, already have that covered. I just hope there's some decent magnification at mfd.

In comparison to 70-180, the 980 grams listed for the 35-150 is also not as heavy as I'd feared. For comparison:

70-180: 811 grams / 28.6 ounces
35-150: 980 grams / 34.6 ounces

The only f2 zoom on the market to compare to with (although Canon's stays f2 thru full range):

Canon RF 28-70 f2 / 1430 grams / 50.4 ounces

Thus, all things considered, a prelim thumbs up to Tamron.

Yeah Canon's 28-70 f/2 seems absurdly heavy, as much as my 70-200 f/2.8. That's the weight I might have expected from a 28-105 f/2.

Now any guesses on what their rumored 70-135 f/2 will weigh. 1.7kg+ for sure IMO and god I don't want to know the price in Australia, probably $6K.

For those who have not used the 70-180, both it and the new 35-150 use Tamron's VXD motor. It's zippy and very impressive for grabbing on and focusing accurately.

Also, some like Dustin Abbott have noted recently that Tamron's 150-500 gets higher marks for fast focusing than Sigma's new 150-600. I believe the excellent VXD motor may be the reason although I have not yet auditioned either of these. I do own the Sigma 100-400. It's excellent but perhaps very slightly slower to focus than my Sony 100-400.

IMO using stepping motors in a sports/action oriented supertele lens is a ridiculous decision on Sigma's part. Stepping motors are fine with small lenses and where silence is important for video.

I just got the new Tamron 150-500/5-6.7 and AF works very well. It’s quick to focus, thanks to the VXD motor.

Even modern RXD Tamron lenses are very good, fast, accurate and reliable for tracking / fast movement. VXD is even faster. Sigma new lenses including the 150-600 struggle with tracking AF on fast moving subjects, it will miss some shots; especialy if the target moves towards you.

980g is impressive if true. It would make me consider trading in my 70-180 even though I already find it to be on the larger side of what I like to carry.

I've been quite pleased with the 70-180's focusing speed with the VXD motors. Glad to see they're adding these to the 35-150 and new G2 28-75.

I think the above rumor also includes a price - I believe the part that says ¥19万 means it will come it at 190,000 Japanese Yen, or ~$1,700 USD at current exchange rates. But I think based on Japan pricing for the 70-180 that the 190,000 JPY (if it sticks) would mean a $1,900 or $2,000 USD retail price.

If they really do manage to bring it under a kg, it will be impressive, but, even if it were a little over that, it'll still be lighter and a nice compromise over switching between a 24-70/2.8 and 70-200/2.8. If it's strong performer, Tamron's going to have a great big hit on their hands.

If it's $2k, I can't justify buying it considering the limited use it would get from me because of the weight. If it's under $1500 then that's a different story.
