Great guys to work with and have local by the way. When I realized I was going to need to return my pre-ordered copy, the guys at Mike's were gracious enough to patiently let me pull out my tripod and laptop and do all sorts of tests to make sure it was a good copy. Always happy to give them my business. I just wish they participated in Sony's EDU program.

Turbodude:

Fantastic shots!!

From the eye reflections, it looks like the venue has continuous soft-panel lighting setup. I also see a small round dot (and 1/200 shutter) that looks like you were using on-camera flash. Can you comment? Lighting ratio's?

I have a mostly outdoor portrait shoot on Sunday (with strobes). I normally only shoot primes such as the Sigma 35mm f1.2, GM 50mm, Sigma 105mm f1.4 and GM 135mm. I'm actually going to force myself to just take the A1 and Tamron 35-150mm (and not keep the primes in my trunk... well, maybe the GM 50mm). Your shots make me feel better about doing such.

Try calling Kurt Seeling the owner of Cardinal Camera personally at 267-249-4915. He seems to always get a large stock of Tamron lenses.

You're a saint! Not only am I getting one, but I can pick up from a store on the way tomorrow in the middle of a 16-hour road trip. What are the odds!?!

Here's another business I've bought from and their web catalog shows the 35-150 in stock.. Though a phone call ahead would be wise..

Unfortunately, just like the arbitrary limitation on frames per second that Sony places on third party lenses and reserves only for its own lenses, Sony also does not allow third party manufacturers to make lenses compatible with teleconverters. It makes business sense. Without this arbitrary limitation, nothing would stop Tamron or Sigma coming out with a 300 f/2.8 or 600 f/4 for thousands less and make Sony's superzooms unmarketable.

Overall, I'll take that loss and consider it a fair tradeoff if it means Sony shares its protocol so that Sigma and Tamron glass otherwise operate nearly as well as native glass.

May I assume there is no way to fit Sony extenders (at least just optically)?

thanks!

Your observations are correct, they use several panels mounted high, and two panels mounted low for a 200 ft red carpet. Honestly the lower panels are more trouble than they are worth because they introduce strange shadows, along with the revolving color wheel of light bars underneath the backdrop and the sun reflecting off the nearby hotel with gold tinted windows.

I use a strobe to try and balance as much of that out as possible, but underexposing the ambient by about 2/3rd to 1/3rd, and filling in the rest with my godox v1 mounted on a bracket. below is the setup. Reason im using wireless trigger is because no one makes a relaible TTL off cam cable for sony alpha 1's as of yet. So this setup works in a pinch. Power is set to manual power due to the fact that the subject to cam distance is relatively consistent because the talent has markers

photo of the redcarpet setup.

Indeed there is not. Sony's teleconverters sticks out from the body into the back of the lens, so lenses that are compatible must be constructed in a manner that provides space for the teleconverter. I'm sure that if Tamron or Sigma tried to design a lens with a work around, Sony might have some harsh words to say about it, followed by an injunction. I haven't seen the contracts myself, but I am sure there is a contract out there that provides that in return for Sigma and Tamron having access to Sony's protocol, they do not design lenses that would permit use with a teleconverter. Given the enormously successful symbiotic relationship that Sigma/Tamron/Sony have (especially with Tamron since Sony is a major shareholder), neither Sigma nor Tamron are going to rock that boat.

I have no desire to own this lens (compact fast prime shooter), but I think Tamron has married size, price, technical IQ, rendering while offering something original so well. There are no direct alternatives, just the usual 2.8 zoom approximations.

Impressive and love the pressure it provides. Would love to see more innovation from other makers.

if sony could some how make a 24-150 2.8, could take a converter, thats only slightly heavier, and less than 3k, id buy it in a heartbeat.

Ok, clear.
I’m really disappointed. Also because the GM 135 cannot fit extenders.

I really hope that the success of this lens, if it is indeed successful, will result in Tamron doing the same thing with their UWA zoom range.

On DSLRs, Tamron had a 17-35 f/2.8-4 and a 35-150 f/2.8-4. Now that they've succeeded with the 35-150 f/2-2.8, I'd be in zoom heaven if they could make a 17-35 f/2-2.8 with the same build and IQ as the 35-150. 17-20mm at f/2, 21-25 at f/2.2, 25-30 at f/2.5, and 30-35 at f/2.8. If they could make and market that around $1599 at preorder with the same level of IQ and a 82mm filter thread, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

If this helps anyone else. I just called one of the locations and they are in stock. I just ordered one online. They are also offering free next day shipping!

Thanks to all in this thread for the help. This lens will be such a great tool for my work. Paired with the 24GM or 20. Now time to sell the 70/200!

Wow, procam really hooked it up. I will have my lens tomorrow and they have been incredibly responsive (I had a question on the shipping). Thanks for sharing.
