It was the nesting season. Here you see the resident/breeding male being stabbed from underwater by an intruding male trying to take over the territory.

You must have an amazing collection of Loon behavior Robert.
Thanks for your comment Gary.
I do have a lot of images (and adding more images with their behavior); the most fun I have is observing and documenting their fascinating behavior. Not sure but I believe loon territorial behavior is unique among birds. They take it to the very limit. In the nesting season intruding males are ruthless.
And there are several top loon researchers. My favorite is Walter Piper’s project. I believe that Walter Piper (and his students) have the largest library/record anywhere, of loons they have captured, marked & released.
Back to my images, I must improve my cataloging. I suspect that you have the largest and longest image library of anyone here. Would you point me toward the method/strategy you have taken to catalog your images?
A few loon organizations I recommend to folks interested in loons:

I would love to help Robert but I am horrible at organizing I am constantly searching for folders because I forget what I named them and it's a constant battle of backing up when hard drives get filled. Right now I have countless CD's and DVD's stacked up from 20 years ago. Most of those I probably can't even read anymore but the work on them is crude anyways. Presently I think I have 7 External Hard drives that I back everything up on. It's easy enough to label something "California Oct 2013" when I take a trip. My problem comes in with all the little incidental stuff I do just casually. I am definitely the wrong person to ask when it comes to cataloging
