Common Loon baby, under 5 days-of-age.

Loon babies are precocial.

This one was on the water and ready to "rock n' roll" the morning after it hatched (during previous night). And loon babies begin diving by the end of their first week.

They're in the estuary, heading out about a mile to the coast to check their lobster traps. I chose this boat because it shows the "character" (if you will) resulting from hauling and setting traps.

Common Loon....

"Great northern diver's" bones are solid, enabling them to make deep dives. Loons have become so adapted to water that they cannot walk on land.

There are several excellent loon references. One of my favs is. https://loon.org

This loon must use its feet to gain flight and it requires 200+ yards of open water

Common Loons

This is a confrontation... not a friendly encounter.

Loons are very territorial, and extremely so when the chick(s) is say... from birth to 3 weeks of age.

One of these loons is the father of two young babies that are close by. The other is intruding into the nesting territory.
