All shots wide open @f2, except the 'big' tree image, which was @f4; all un-corrected, no fringing correction etc, but I did lift the shadows a bit in the creak image. Amazingly sharp lens, and very low fringing!!!!!

Thanks for posting many samples, if I may ask, which body you shoot with it? Previous files suggested you shoot on a Leica body, but it's not shown on EXIF.

Below are 2 examples of my new Voigtlander 28mm f2.8 Ultron II Asph lens on my Kolari Vision UT sensor modded A7rII using silent shutter. These were taken from the top of the Trexler Nature Preserve, Schnecksville, PA. Color balance is set to my White balance stored memory for Cloudy Conditions.

I am liking quite a bit about the OOF areas with this lens (generally not too busy, ok transition zones, bokeh balls are fairly clean), but I am not liking the transition from blown out or nearly blown out to darker areas in the OOF areas. That transition just looks unpleasant. I can live with most of the bokeh shots that I have seen with this lens so far, but the ones with bright highlights OOF definitely are not my cup of tea.
I think it does pretty well for what it is so far for sure--it's quite small, sharp, decently wide and relatively fast. No free lunch though. This crop of the right top quarter of Avaker's photo here--strikes me as distracting with some swirl and busy-ness and fairly high contrast, some slight doubling of the fine twigs structure. I have not studied the photos yet on this lens--but I have not noticed anything too offensive either in OOF areas, more of a neutral rendering. Just some instances likes this, and the one you described as well.

Nice shot. For me this is an example where the bokeh looks quite good.
Hi Steve,
I believe that the new Voigtlander 28mm f2.8 Ultron II Asph is a high contrast lens. You need to be aware of this for your composition framing and processing. I anticipate that I may be using Grad ND filters with the lens at least in a number of situations to try to tame this.

A little Black Pro Mist filter might do really well when used judiciously with this lens.

I was thinking the same thing. Do you know if anyone makes them with 39mm threads?
I don't...but I would probably just order a 37mm or 40.5mm with a step up or step down. They do make the BPM in 1/4 at these two sizes. I'll pick on up if I order this lens...which I am likely to do.

I have a Tiffen Black Pro Mist 3 filter in 100mm size for my Lee 100mm filter holder. It was a free gift from Tiffen. But this should soften the image as well lower the contrast somewhat.
I do not believe that Tiffen makes a Black Mist filter in 39mm. But any of these filters I believe will soften the overall performance of the lens to the best of my knowledge though they may lower contrast.
In addition to regular Grad filters and a Reverse Grad Filter, I also have this special Grad filter in 100mm filter size which I have yet to try:

Very temped you pick this lens up…I do wonder if we’ll get an FE version.
There is a reason I prefer leaving the "Rendering" category in my reviews as a last segment. This gives me time to explore the lens and take a lot of pictures at various distances. I will post my thoughts soon.
Just in a sentence though: I'm very pleased with how it renders. It's a high resolution/contrast lens so don't expect to see much SA glow when shooting wide open. Lenses under-corrected for spherical aberration like the 7A 28mm f/1.4, tend to soften rendering and you won't see this with the Voigtlander 28mm f/2 Ultron II. However, even at mid-distance where the transition zone is noticeable, rendering is never distracting with this lens. From the samples I've seen, I actually prefer how it draws compared to the much bigger and $$ 28/1.4 Lux.
I think the bokeh changes a lot not only if one closes down from f2, but also if one changes the focus distance, e.g. from 0.7 meters to 0.6 or 0.5 meters, and of course the distance to the background. But if one focuses at 0.5m wide open, it is a big difference to 0.7m and f2.4 etc. It does have some pop at f4
Looks like a lovely lens and I'd love to find a copy, but it doesn't appear to be for sale anywhere in Canada and it also looks like it can't be shipped to Canada from US distributors. If anyone knows a location for purchase of this lens either new or used I'd be very grateful.
