Because of the sharpness the Voigtlander Ultron 28 a great option for landscapes. Used it quite a bit in Scotland, results are fantastic. Summicron VI can’t compare and when I had the VII it wasn’t close for sharpness. May have been a poor copy, maybe my Ultron is super special, but the Voigt Ultron is amazing for landscapes. That being said, the rendering of the Cron VI was special when using for street/people. Rendering much nicer than the Ultron

The Voigtlander 28mm f/2 Ultron is such a great lens for landscapes that I wonder if too many will end up replacing it with the larger 28mm f/2 APO-Lanthar.

I find myself at that predicament.
I have the 28 Ultron II paired with a 50mm f/2 APO-Lanthar as part of my landscape kit. Not sure if the new 28 will pair "better" with the 50. My thoughts are the it will be minimal difference, and not worth the effort/loss.

Exactly. I'm pretty sure it'll perform better, but will the difference really show in our images...especially since we usually stop down for landscapes? Flare resistance and lateral CA might be the more noticeable differences. Even though it's an APO design, that doesn't guarantee perfect correction of lateral CA, so it's still something worth watching for.
Four 28mm lenses all pretty recent, that's a lot of choice. The APO should be superb at f2, filling the gap for pure technical performance in the M options?
I am going through this dilemma myself. I'm in the market for a 28mm M mount lens for a 4 month stint in Greece this summer. I really want the APO but if Voigtlander do not release it in time, I then have to decide on which other lens to pick up. It's a tough choice!
Has anyone tested the Haoge LH-VM13P on the Voigtlander 28mm f/2 Ultron II? Does it cause any vignetting? I'm curious how it compares to the SquareHood version that’s made specifically for this lens.
I had the squarehood version and I don't recall hard vignette at all. There might have been a very slight soft vignette increase in evenly lit plain backgrounds but I never noticed it.
Note it doesn't fit the 35 1.5 due to the inner wall where the hood covers the chrome bit on the 28 being too narrow in diameter. It's designed for the ultron 28 where the area right under the bayonet is the same diameter. I half destroyed a black one trying to force it to fit on the 35 1.5 by pressing it into a filter ring (don't do it).
Thanks for confirming. Luckily, I'll be using it with the 28mm Ultron so no vignetting.
I received the hood and it's very well made and looks similar to Leica hoods like the one on the 35mm f/1.4 FLE.
One issue is that the hood doesn't fit when using Leica UV filters but it does work with B+W filters as your image shows.
I heard this lens will be discontinued. Does anyone know why?
I was thinking about getting it to pair it with my 28 lux (on film), but my last voigtlander was the 28mm color skopar and maybe it was my copy but I was very disappointed with performance

It had already been discontinued. Cosina likely saw the newer Voigtlander 28mm f/2 APO-Lanthar as an improved version of this lens, even though it's slightly larger.
That makes sense. if I were looking for a 28mm f/2 lens, I'd choose the APO over the Ultron.

I think it makes sense. If I were in the market for a 28mm f/2 lens, I would take the APO over the Ultron.
My guess is they are making it on the same production line(s) ... tapped out on capacity, so had to kick the Ultron to the curb to make room for the APO-Lanthar.
I shoot the silver Ultron just like @ftllens showed above, also paired with the square hood. It looks great on the Safari and silver body. The APO can't do that, since it’s only available in black aluminum rather than brass chrome.
Unless you want something very small and compact without paying the price of an elmarit.
Yes, there is the color skopar for that but at least my copy was pretty bad
I ended up keeping my Voigtlander 28mm f/2 Ultron II even though I also bought the 28mm f/2 APO-Lanthar.
28mm is my favorite focal length and the Ultron is silver chrome, which looks perfect on my M10-P Safari, so that combo alone made it hard to let go.
Optically, the APO-Lanthar performs slighly better in terms of resolution and contrast. It's also better corrected for color aberration and shows less optical vignetting. The tradeoff is that it's noticeably larger, blocks the framelines much more, and it lacks a focus tab, which I really prefer on a 28.
If you want to see the differences for yourself, here are two posts:
Not long ago, I received this 28mm f/2 Ultron lens from a photographer. It's used but hardly shows any signs of wear, a black II model with brass. It coincided with my trip to Paris, so there are a few images from Paris below. I have to say I absolutely love this lens, which is truly excellent quality. BTW, I also have the Leica M28/2 asph 11604 version, but I feel it doesn't have much advantage except for the vignetting.
Thank you, Fred, for writing this review, which made me determined to own this amazing lens. For more Paris photos shot by this lens, please click: https://35mmplus.com/2025/12/09/paris-paris/

By chance, I stumbled upon this amazing performance, and I was very happy to spend some joyful time with these little actors. Goodbye, Barcelona!
BTW, All these photos were taken with this cute Voigtlander 28mm f/2 Ultron.
