p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · FE 200-600 front element part got loose

I just noticed that the front element part of the lens where the hood attaches is moving/got loose (please compare pictures 1&2). Looks like the hood is giving too much strain to this part of the lens ( I guess it is poorly constructed). I have now pushed down and duck-tapped it since I don’t see any loose screws or anything lol. The lens is working perfectly but I may need to send it out for repair. Does anyone have this issue??

I have to push it down to stay normal

Problem : this part is moving

Same thing happened with mine in March. I sent it to Sony for repair and it is currently being shipped back to me. The lens actually functioned well despite this and held up for 3 weeks in the field despite a loose front element. Clearly there is a construction problem with the lens model.

The actual element is loose?

I had a similar problem, but on the hood side. The hood was coming loose in the field to the point where I had to constantly check it every 30m or so. After having to chase it as it rolled away a couple of times, I duct-taped it to the lens and it hasn't bothered me since.

Looks like the whole thing is moving including the front element.

Thanks for the report, I have recollections of a Minolta 300/2,8 sort of coming apart at the middle, where the two main sections could be turned a couple of degrees in relation to each other, which was I was told then something all white Minolta teles could develop.

As far as the FE 200-600 is concered, I really like mine even if I'm a useless birder; have never brought the hood yet (it makes the lens about twice as long in use and it doesn't fit my Thinktank Digital Holster anymore) and with this report it looks like its cupboard home shall be permanent.

The part that came loose on mine was the black ring at the front of the lens. This includes the front lens element and the attachment collar for the lens hood. Presumably knocking the attached lens hood would put stress on the ring and could cause this, but a telephoto lens without a hood is often not very useful.

Sony fixed mine without cost to me although it is was no longer under warranty. I am a Sony Pro Support member.

Overall, I love the lens, and it is great value for money given the quality of the optics, weight and zoom range.

I just found this problem on my lens today.
We’ve been having record heat for the last week, I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

Interesting.. I wonder if this front element ring is held together with an epoxy. Hoping the problem is batch specific and not widespread. Let's see if anyone else experiences the issue...if so please post here

Hi Everyone. That has just happening to me right now. The front ring has starting to move. What is the problem and what is the resolution??
I think I can actually hear a screw moving inside the lens. Really bizarre.
Thank you for yout help
Frederic

So far nobody knows what the problem is.
2 people have sent their lens to Sony for repair, so that has been their resolution.
A third person reported the same problem but has not provided any follow up information.
I don't think it's bizarre at all. It's just a mechanical defect.

In my case, I have bumped the front of the lens hood more than a couple of times, and I believe my issue is self inflicted.

I have not sent it in, right now I have 4 pieces of electrical tape holding it.
I don't know how it's attached, or in how many spots it's attached, but on mine, I think there is still one hanging on.

I'm thinking of a couple of drops of super glue to the outside area to hold it in place.
If I'm careful, and can keep it on the outer part of the shell, a razor blade should be able to slice through if work needs to be done.

I recognize that I'm replying to an old thread, but my lens is starting to develop the same problem described here. Did you ever get yours fixed?

Yes I did, but I have no idea what the cost was.

I bought my lens used from LensAuthority and they offered a 2 year insurance plan for $14 dollars.
Mine started to separate after about a year and a half, and I forgot that I had the insurance.
After my mind woke up and I remembered, I sent it in, and all the repairs were covered.

Good evening.
I had the same problem recently and I can give you a quick fix without sending the lens to Sony Service:

1 - remove the front rubber gasker (be careful not to break it but is very easy)
2- once removed, remove the metal (silver color) ring with a small scredriver. There are 4 tiny screws
3- once removed the metal ring you will have access to the screws to tighten the loose part of the filter thread and lens hood attachment.
Mount everything back

My suggestion is not to travel with the lens hood attached even reversed, as seems, with time, with vibrations, to loose these screws.

Anyway is an easy fix, it took me a small screwdriver and 5 minutes.

yes, unfortunately it seems to be a well known issue, with some speculation that it's caused by pressure put on that part by the attached hood if it's knocked or just jostled in a bag. I've taken to not attaching the reversed hood in bags, just leaving it loose around the end of the lens.

Carried my 200-600 in a backpack pointed down with the lens hood on and it got stuck. Guess with all the hiking and jostling the hood got a bit warped. Not doing that again with any lens and carrying hood loose.
