This lens is incredible.
Just wanted to reiterate how incredible the lens is. Every Sony owner should have it. You won't regret it.
Images cannot show how satisfying and confidently those XD motors move this f1.2 glass.
I agree… I just bought one with a new Sony A7R V and man that lens is sharp!. It’s my favorite for portraits and everything else. I took it out this evening and put it on my Skywatcher Star Adventurer (Astro tracker) and I took a one minute exposure of the night sky at f/1.2 just to test out the image clarity and if the stars were pinpoint to the edge or not…. They Were! All the way to the corners at 61mp… an excellent lens.

Agreed. I never cared for the 50mm focal length until I got to try out this lens. Always thought I was a 35mm guy. Nowadays, this lens is pretty much the first lens I reach for when I want a walkaround lens. There's an "it factor" this lens has that I don't see in any other 50-ish mm lens I've tried.

Same here. I always had been shooting wider or narrower but today this fifty is my all-time favorite among any FL.
Today I have a couple other fifties (CV 50 APO-L for E Mount, probably the best manual fifty, and CV 50 1.5 Asph Chrome for M mount which has the best build quality I have seen). But 50GM takes the cake, it effortlessly nails that focus at 1.2 all the time. Such an easy to operate lens. IQ and bokeh is top notch.
I guess I just like the 50mm focal as my favorite Fuji lens is the 35 1.4. The 50GM is just a delight though.
Even the missus loved this - she's not a big fan of being in any photos.
Those of you who have owned both Voigtlander 40/50 f/1.2 and this lens, how would you compare the two lenses? I think I prefer character (flaws) of Voigtlander, but I am not a huge fan of manual focusing. For my needs (taking photos of my young kids), no AF in Voigtlander makes it pretty much useless and it stays more time in my dry cabinet than on my camera.

I have the CV40 and the 50GM. I think they're complementary and the 50GM serves the gap of "I need to turn night into day" but with autofocus. The CV40 does have more character and unique rendering, but the 50GM isn't at all clinical in its images in the way I kind of find the 24/35 f/1.4s from Sony. Only downside of the 50 is that's it's definitely chonky and a little visually imposing depending on the context of your shooting.
I too own both (CV40 is a fat declickable version).
I don't think of them as interchangeable they are for different purpose.
50GM is a ultimate can-do-it-all lens, while CV40 is an manual tool with an unusual combination of interesting features like fast modern dreamy f1.2, sharp stopped down, pleasing non-clinical rendering.
Yeah, I have both and like you fine more uses for the 50 because of AF. Shooting kids and pets and stuff. But it’s just never going to be a lens I take out on a long hike out when I’m just exploring and farting around. Actually I did take it on a short hike with my partner along with the 100 stf and the 16-35 PZ (or20-70 f/4, I can’t remember). I was trying to see how realistic it would be to have a kit built around 72mm filters. The hike continued to sunset and the 1.2 did actually prove itself quite useful, and there were not many great views on that hike so most of the keepers were actually environmental portraits instead of landscapes.
But for actual backpacking, if I’m not expecting rain I’d rather have the 40 (maybe paired with the cv 15 and Samyang 75, all sharing 58mm filters).
