I have been doing infinity and a lot of close-up, as close as it will focus and no issues. I can focus on something on the extreme side and very sharp and surprisingly so at 1.8. I guess I need to post some stuff but have been really busy. But suffice to say, I am more than happy. The lower left is slightly not as sharp but it is so extreme at the lower left edge, that it isn't enough to matter as everything else is spot on.
I bought the Kase filters to go with this lens but no go. But I have other fast lenses and they work with them so not a big deal but would have been nice, would have, the operative word, at least for me. Center good but beyond that, wonderful blur. lol ...Show more →
Would love to see how good it can get across the frame at short distance, if it was just my copy I could maybe try another.

I have the kase night filter and just tested wide open with some dots printed on a piece of paper. Not really seeing anything terrible in the corners but its a pretty simple test. Hopefully I'll have a clear night soon to play with some stars.

That would be great if it works out. The UV totally messes up the 14 for me. I thought there was absolutely something wrong with my copy and then remembered I had the Kase filter in. Took it out and wham, good stuff. :^)

Same here, although most of my usage won't be anywhere near wide open, for astro I was hoping to night sky filter would work.... we'll see. I might get out tonight, although nowhere very dar. At least I'll get some stars in the corners

Conditions weren't good for making an image worth keeping last night, but there were stars, and it was dark enough to test with and without the kase night filter and vs the 24mm. Also compared the a1 to the a7c....etc.
Verdict for this thread for me at least: The 14mm GM is really freaking good for night scenes. Pin points with minimal coma corner to corner.
With the kase filter in place...... absolute dog crap. blurry streaks at the edges, less sharp all around. Focus was also much harder to get right, going from just the edge of infinity without the filter to a camera reported 6m with the filter. Going up to F4 only minimally helped the corners, but not enough to be anywhere near usable.
The ND set is set to arrive today. if those are this bad I'll return them too. I did not test the kase with the 24mm, only combo from last night I neglected as I have the hoya front filter already for my 24mm.
Quick screen grabs, unedited included. Both are just inside the top left corner of the frame.

Try it first, the result in the SUF (my link) maybe by mistake.

I am feeling quite glad I also pre-ordered the NiSi S5 holder for the lens haha! Although the sad part is that for video on a gimbal this means I値l have to accept corner degradation if I want to shoot open aperture S-Log because the rear filters will be the only feasible option. Maybe I need to look at integrating HLG into my workflow so I can get the lower base ISO.

This would probably be a fantastic lens for underwater shooting! I知 so excited to get into the Sony system (from Olympus).
The thing is it is really small and light so that alone makes it so extremely versatile and then I知 finding it really well corrected so this is truly a nice addition to any type of photography requiring a very wide lens.

Lets see how filers in the rear lens holder work. I'd think they would be better, but who knows.

None. For astro a light pollution filter is nice to have, for regular landscape ND filters are commonly used, rear filters or the expensive 150mm front filters with bulky holders are the only option because of the bulbus front element.

I wanted them to make use of daylight, very shallow depth of field using the 1.8 or a little higher. But they don't work with this lens. I will have them at my disposal for other lenses. Also the UV is nice to protect the sensor from dust and on testing, I didn't see any quality of image with their use, with other lenses. So I may have them on one camera and have the 14, when needed on another one. I typically go out with 2 cameras, sometimes 3.

Have you tested the ND filters at smaller apertures with the 14mm? curious if there is a point at which they begin to work as expected.

I'm asking myself this same question, as I contemplate whether I need a filter system--on top of what I already have (screw in filters with step-up rings)--specifically to accommodate this lens. Seems ridiculous, but I would probably be using the lens specifically for landscapes, and often times with water in the scene. So, a long exposure is desired. That said, I'll try to go without filters initially. I think 98% of the time, I don't use filters.

Most of the testing was done with the UV and smaller apertures didn't help.

Hoping to buy the 14mm GM soon, and will likely swap out either my 14-24 DG DN or 12-24 GM for it.
Has anyone tested the 14mm thoroughly for astro yet? Either on a star tracker, or with a shutter speed short enough to have zero trailing (NPF rule). Preferably at various apertures to see how aberrations clear up etc. Also any heavily pushed files to see if it has a red/magenta ring issue like the 12-24 GM does.

I have. I can post a sample tonight. It痴 impressive.
