It'll be interesting to see if your real-world tests, Tim, corroborate this...

Of course this is at relatively close testing distances, and the Tamron, focussing to 1:2, is likely optimised at around 1:20 (1:2 macros are often optimised at 1:10 even) which is close to the magnification of their tests, whereas the Sigma is not at its best at these distances, and shines at longer ones.

It’s interesting because in the tests I did, a long while back, on the Tamron at about 25 meters, I found not too much difference between f4 and f5.6 and in fact not all that much from f2.8 to f4.

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1623747/0

Close range may be different, but of course the Tamron will focus much closer than the Sigma.

Yeah, the Tamron is sharp at wide apertures, but really jumps at f/5.6. My comments were back when I was seeing samples from Fred's first copy of the CV 35....after seeing the results from the second copy, it's going to be really, really hard to beat the CV 35. We'll see how close the Tamron cat get....I think at f/5.6 and smaller apertures it has a better chance to have a good showing.

I will shoot a comparison, I just need the right light and weather....which seems to be hard to get in April. The weather pattern may be changing mid

Thanks Tim. Yes, the Tamron is likely at an advantage vs the Sigma at close range.
I don't think the Tammy will be able to match the CV for 'sharpness' though (and I mean that in every sense of the word: micro-contrast, edge accutance, tonality etc)
Regardless, the Tammy is one of those rare goldilocks designs that is just ridiculously good relative to its price!

Yes, my comments about the Tamron in regards to the CV 35 and 35i was more geared towards the samples originally posted. That it could hang with both of them. But when Fred posted the samples from his second copy of CV 35, that changed things for me.

And I have infinity shots from a long time ago using the Tamron, and what I see loosely follows the MTF test I see here:

https://www.ephotozine.com/article/tamron-35mm-f-2-8-di-iii-osd-m1-2-review-34366/performance

Anyway, probably getting a little off topic. I will post comparisons between the CV 35 and Tamron 35 when I have a chance to test them. I don't have the 35i to compare.

Jeez; what an embarrassment.

Did you see the look on the officers faces?

I felt their pain and I'm an American.

Fred said many times that he will make a comparison between the 3 last 35mm (sigma GM apo). But like you, I'm really curious to see his comparisons ;-)

Distortion

The Voigtlander 35mm f/2 APO is well corrected for distortion. There is no profile for Lightroom yet but when available, it won't do much to the image. Outstanding.

Here is a comparison to the Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN, which has some barrel distortion.
The Sigma also has a much wider AOV even at this distance.

Minimal Focus Distance performance (MFD)

The Voigtlander 35mm f/2 APO focuses as close as 0.35 m (E-mount) and 0.5m for the M-mount version. I will be testing the E-mount version here. (Max. Magnification: 1:6.4)

It does not focus as close as the latest 35mm lenses on the market like the FE 35/1.4 GM or Sigma 35/2 DG DN which can both focus as close as 0.27m.

The MFD's resolution performance is good wide open, great at f/2.8 and outstanding at f/4:

Full image size (thumbnail):

Here are 100% crops showing the center area at 0.35m:
(This has been updated using my latest copy, which is optimal)

MFD: f/2 vs f/2.2 (100% magnification)

MFD: f/2.2 vs f/2.5 (100% magnification)

MFD: f/2.5 vs f/2.8 (100% magnification)

MFD: f/2.8 vs f/4 (100% magnification)

I will compare it to the Sony 35/1.4 GM. (Sorry don't have the Samyang in hands. Great lens though)

Love the pics

This is what I would do to that Bonneville.
