I love the new aperture mechanism but would prefer it to be round only at f/2.8 like the CV 50/2 APO's. That's because I value the famous Cosina's sunstars and prefer to have it well defined starting at around f/5 instead of f/8. With other Voigtlander, Loxia and Zeiss lenses, it's possible to get defined sunstars starting at f/2.8 depending on how fast the lens is. (In exchange for only round specular highlights wide open, which I agree is not ideal)

BTW: I've just recivied a perfect copy of the Voigtlander 35/2 APO today and when the weather cooperates, I will update the infinity crops, add a comparison to the Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM and finish the review.

Agreed. Even if you only had a straight bladed aperture from around F6.3 onward I think many landscape shooters who enjoy Cosina's signature sunstar would be a lot happier with this mechanism.

Is it just me or there's really some purple fringing at large apertures and purple haze at smaller ones?

Not sure mine is perfect, but in more controlled tests, it seems close on my a7R III. Or close enough I'm not sure I want to gamble on other copies.

Were both new copies perfect or just one of the 2? I guess it means a difference between 1 out of 4 vs 2 out of 4....

Looking forward to the update and comparison. Regarding Cosina's choice of shapes through the 35 APO's aperture range, we'll have to agree to disagree.

For stopped down architectural work, i.e. f/5.6, it's nice not to have any, let alone obnoxiously large sunstars. Obviously this is a highly subjective matter. IMO it just looks more natural. More how the human eye views a scene.

I like how these images rendered. I like sun stars but it’s not a priority either.

Or they could revert the E mount version to the 50 APO's aperture design and leave the current implementation in the VM mount version. I'd be good with that.

Please feel welcome to donate that lens to me, since you don’t need it. That way you can support Cosina’s continued innovation *and* another photographer who wishes to make images with the lens. ;-)

I’ll PM my address and send the shipping payment whenever you are ready...

Right. I’ll set a reminder to ask you for your address on March 31 next year. So I can post it on April 1.

Thanks very much Fred. Those F11 sunstars actually look just fine to me. Do you have an example at F8?

You're welcome Richard. All those shots were handheld and I tried to get some good sunstar definition at f/8 and in third stops and was not able to for these scenes. Only f/10 and f/11 gave this type of definition. I'm hoping this is not the case and as soon as the weather cooperates here, I will post a sunstar sequence for us.

You can see that the Tamron is wider than the Voigtlander, I did not adjust the framing to account for that. I'm hoping it doesn't get in the way of comparison.

Thanks Tim, the Tamron put up an honourable fight, but alas, Goliath won this one. I suspect on 61MP, the CV apo would pull further ahead...
Also, have you had a chance to compare the CV with the Tammy up close? With the Tammy presumably optimized for close work, might give David a chance to take this one!

Yes, I mentioned earlier that my a7R III is most likely a limiting factor. But I don't think any of the other 35's I have would have put up as good a fight.

No, I haven't as I don't shoot the Tamron much that way (not sure why). I may try to get out to do a bokeh comparison, and if I do, I'll try to do something closer to MFD to compare.

Thanks Tim. I seem to recall that the only issue with the Tammy 35mm was the increased DOF in the corners. As the CV apo 35mm has an achilies heel also (its outlined bokeh at greater than 1.5m wide open), the Tammy may even out-render it in some situations !

What happens to the sunstars when you de-click the aperture ring and use in-between values? E.g f/7

Great question James.
F/7.1 can be done with clicks since it's 2/3 stops from f/5.6 but I will do a test with de-clicking as well. I'm hoping we get well-defined sunstars at f/8. That will be a good compromise for me having round apertures at f/2.8 and f/5.6 and great sunstar at f/8.
