Round Bokeh balls and beautifully soft backgrounds on a Sony A1 with a Sony lens? I shot this quick portrait of a friend to test that possibility. Yep, it just depends on the lens, and how you shoot. The portrait was just cropped to a 4/3 ratio which is how she wanted it.Totally doable
The second one was done to mimic the big dreamy Bokeh balls you see posted everywhere showing the new Plena lens from Nikon. No special tricks, this is full frame with no crop. It is the lens. As you can see a very minor crop would remove any of the distorted ball.
Is this a Plena substitute? No, in total the Plena offers other things that result in a special look that I quite like. But at least as far as round smooth bokeh balls we can get that look from other lenses like this one.

I don't see a point in clear or UV filters. The big siblings of the 200-600mm (400GM/600GM) don't have an option for a front filter and are far more expensive pieces of glass. If they don't get one, the 200-600 doesn't need it either.
I might consider it if shooting around blowing sand or pebbles getting shot towards the lens for some reason.
