The second one was done to mimic the big dreamy Bokeh balls you see posted everywhere showing the new Plena lens from Nikon. No special tricks, this is full frame with no crop. It is the lens. As you can see a very minor crop would remove any of the distorted ball.
Is this a Plena substitute? No, in total the Plena offers other things that result in a special look that I quite like. But at least as far as round smooth bokeh balls we can get that look from other lenses like this one.
