Wow, I see that your new toy is allowing you shutter speeds up to 1/12800 with ISO set at only 500. Are you enjoying the 400 GM?

Went back out after dinner. Still skunked by the Osprey, but better luck with the swallows coming down low in the dying light.

30FPS and spray and pray That is how I manage to get a few bug catches. Of course it is always when they radically change direction that they go for the bug so it is usually a bit of luck if I can pan up/down fast enough and in the correct direction.

Nice work on them.

Well, I almost got one this morning. I was at 20 FPS, if I had set it at 30 FPS, I could have gotten better shots of the swallow catching the bug. 8000 ISO and very heavily cropped, even Topaz could only do so much.

If you have a spot where they come close it is by far the best swallow shooting lens I've owned. The AF is just crazy fast if you don't use TCs. But obviously 400 can be limited in many locations. I have a couple good locations this time of year where they will fly right around me in good numbers so I'm having lots of fun with the 400GM and these swallows. Nice not to worry about the MFD as I sometimes do with the 600GM. Also the 400 is a little easier to handhold due to the shorter length.

Yes, the SSs I've been getting have been a bit crazy...I used to limit my lower ISO to 500 (which is the dual gain spot) as I rarely had enough light to let it drop down to ISO 200 and below. I had to remove my lower limit so I could let it drop to ISO 100 and not have to go crazy fast on the SS in good light.

The 400 has been a blast to shoot. I was hoping I could sell my 600 and use it at 560 and 800. So far I don't think I will sell the 600 as the 800 performance isn't quite up to what I want. IQ is there in controlled testing I did...not quite as good as the 600 at 840 but it is actually AF performance where the bigger discrepancy is coming in. Even comparing 560 v 600 I notice the bare 600GM is getting a better AF hit rate. I thought the hit rate wouldn't be affected by the TCs as much as it is.

I'll continue to test them back to back and make my decision on selling the 600 over the next couple months.
