I think it depends on the use case of the 55/1.8. I wouldn't use it so much for landscapes, or architecture or similar things, for photographing people I really like the way the 55 renders. Whether the bokeh balls have a bit of onion rings when looking closely, is mostly not an issue at all and only enthusiasts look at such things instead of looking at the subject of interest in the image ;-)
I don't know why you wouldn't use the 55 for landscapes or architecture! It's only, and very minor, downsides are LoCA at wide apertures (although it's starp as anything) and a little bit of onion ring, and maybe the sunstar loving brigade, of which I am an every second tuesday member, might have reservations. But for landscape it's perfect; at landscape apertures no Loca, and super sharp. It's not as contrasty as some lenses, but in the kind of way that just means a small contrast boost on conversion if you prefer that.

All I wanted was a 50/1.4 GM at 500 grams and $1,300. This 1.2 will be bigger and more expensive which means a likely no buy. I’ll wait and see...
yeah, I would personally have preferred a smaller, lighter, and even better version of the ZA1.4
But this lens probably makes more commercial sense, and I'm sure plenty will prefer it.

Sony is crafty, they may have plans for a new 50/1.4 GM or maybe even G as well. Putting on my best marketing/conspiracy hat, perhaps their plan is to release a beautiful, spendy 50/1.2 GM to suck up all the demand from high end users who want a 50 GM and have the money to pay for it...then they'll release a lower spec, smaller, but still great and quite expensive 50/1.4 to get those who can't (or won't) make the leap to a pricey 1.2 but would happily pay a pretty penny for a quality 1.4 that's smaller than the current ZA.

I think a Sony GM 50 1.2 is to quiet the naysayers who keep saying Canon’s glass is better because it’s 1.2 (a statement I disagree with).

And to quiet those who falsely, and without knowledge of physics, claim that f/1.2 lenses for Sony E-mount are impossible.

Back when I shot with Canon, I had the 50mm f/1.2, and while I didn't use it much, and would even less today as I 99.99% focus on birds, I would still be tempted on this new Sony lens. There's just something magical about them.

Regarding size they won't be able to leverage the 18mm flange distance at 50mm compared to ultra wides. Sony's current favorite tricks to minimize size are to sacrifice vignetting, distortion, and breathing. Relaxing distortion may not be reclaim too much weight given there's not much correction required at 50mm. Not sure how much they can relax correction for vignetting given that f/1.2 should have a fair amount baked in. I'm predicting the size and weight will be on par with Canon's ~1kg beast.

I much rather a 50mm f1.4 GM lens that is at least as good as the Zeiss ZA 50mm f1.4 yet smaller and lighter. Then I will switch to the new lens right away. I doubt a f1.2 lens will meet my size and weight criteria.

......... If it is smaller than the 50 RF I might be interested. As much as I love the rendering of the Canon, it is so front heavy when attached to the R bodies.

F1.8 and GM optics.
I really think bokeh and small DOF is largely over estimated at the moment.

This was always the dumbest argument. There were f/0.95 full frame lenses available for e-mount that worked just fine 5 years ago. Now we have several, plus many f/1.2 lenses from Voigtlander and one from Sigma, and of course you could adapt things like the EF 85/1.2L without any problems too. So I have no idea how anyone rational could claim that it was impossible. I also would point to the Leica 50/0.95 Noctilux. The M mount is even narrower than the E-mount.

Vignetting on some of their lenses is a bit of an issue for astro but probably for portrait either a. is fine or b. the increased noise isn't a big deal.

Shoot, like some of you I was hoping for an update to the 50 1.4 ZA with GM build and features and improved AF and maybe some IQ improvements here and there... Not keen on what f1.2 means... Hopefully they pull out a miracle of engineering and do it in less than the size and weight of the current ZA.

Is it just me or is there a pattern to this madness? Sony’s current high end lens strategy is sensible - ludicrous statement lens - sensible.
50mm F1.2 GM - bonkers, just to show it’s possible on e-mount.
35mm F1.4 GM - sensible, needed upgrade.
12-24mm F2.8 GM - completely nuts, ya just had to do it.
20mm F1.8 G - sensible wide angle prime that’s compact and just the right aperture

Honestly the 50/1.2 is exactly what I wanted - something really super fast, but really good optics and AF.
If Sony pulls this off and engineers a miracle that is sharp at f1.2, has great bokeh and rendering, and weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 grams, I may very well plunk down a chunk of money. Go Sony! Give us the miracle 50mm we’ve been waiting for. 🙂
