The slideshow for me with the R5 is non-existing at 20 fps, that's just a made up term to substitute for lack of understanding. I watch a video with Rudy Winston, well respected in the industry who says there is no frame insertion happening on the R5 its live feed. He's the top canon rep in the USA from what I gather. I use the CFexpress card in mine with the top read and write speeds, its recommended for top performance.

Sure...

“Hate that I have to agree with him but he's right the R5 does focus better... “

“I have the R5 and I can make it hit... As for Mark Smith, he's not a canon shooter and admits that in the video... From the videos I watch not seeing anything spectacular from the a1 for that price range.”

“How can you say the AF on the a1 is better than the R5 when you shot 95 % of the time with 7.1 glass and you use your top glass on the A1... “

“I use reviews and watch tube vids to inform me about the a1., which is mostly what you have done. With today's technology you can get a live experience looking through someone else viewfinder. I can clearly see how the a1's tracking and BEAF works. The regular issues, drop off the subject on a busy background, grab the ripples on the water instead of the subject. So not going to flog a dead horse any longer... The a1 is not heads above the R5 by any-means. My apologies in advance if that offends anyone.”

And no, I’m not getting you confused with arbitrage as he isn’t a fanboy and uses equipment with an unbiased view.

The R5 is a great and capable camera, but it can’t do what the a1 does. Like I said, maybe the Canon R1 will compete when it arrives because currently the $6,500 1DX Mark III surely doesn’t and neither does the R5.

I’m sorry you feel compelled to come over to the Sony forum and not add anything of value and watch YouTube videos on a camera you never intend to use or purchase just to tell yourself the R5 is still the bees knees.

Neither Canon nor Nikon have a camera that is currently capable of doing everything the a1 does. And to quote you once again, “My apologies in advance if that offends anyone” and again (slightly modified), “But I understand that you Canon fanboys can't come to grips with that...”

P.S. it’s not a live feed and has lag.

Wow, now going to insults - "don't have mental capacity" - "fanboys" - "crap" ... Pretty poor reply in my book. No arguments whatsoever, just hearsay and assumptions. It shows you are no scientist, a youtube video seems to be enough to build an opinion.
Your statement was absolute and made without context. The "by any means" is pretty clear and pretty wrong. The Canon is limited to a low readout, lower bit 20 fps. The Sony can track at up to 30 fps. This alone ridicules the "by any means" statement. For the rest: the burdon of proof is upon you.

Pius made a perfectly valid point that you have grossly distorted with insulting language. Differences of opinion are commonplace and welcome, but try to keep it civil.

Pius didn't make valid points all the time, unless it is o.k. to make absolute claims from youtube videos.
I agree that the comment you are referring to should be issued much more politely. However, you should call out Pius, too, when using "lack of mental capacity", "fanboy" or "crap" to flavor his comments.

"The a1 is not heads above the R5 by any-means. "
By any means? Really? You are now talking a bit over your head, man. Do you think before writing this stuff? You all learned that by watching youtube videos? Where most not even maxed out the capabilities?

I responded to you with the same tone and aggressiveness you applied to me.
Yes, I think before I write. You are aware this is a learning and video thread hence the name.
The thread is full of videos about the A1 and its capabilities and some awesome input from some knowledgeable users. If by reading and watching videos on the subjects we are discussing is not for you so be it.

Decided to shoot mechanical shutter and use the 1/400 sync speed. Wow. Fantastic experience. Normally my shoots are in a pretty chaotic environment and I sometimes get some slight motion blur or out of focus images with the a7r4 if I don't hold the camera steady enough. For example, it was storming outside, so I had 14 ten year old girls and parents and some siblings, etc. in the garage and running around. No room for a tripod as I am moving around too much, posing, shooting, etc. But tonight at 1/400, I think out of 220, 1 was out

I concur.... Its an incredible camera to use. And, its the first mirrorless I actually want to shoot with the mechanical shutter! It has them most amazing sound and dampening! I just love it so far :-)

Sort of late but I want to comment the new "Silent mode" and closing of shutter when turning camera off. You can actually configure which settings the "silent mode" effects in the Silent Mode Settings menu. This is what the Target Function Settings is for. So if you want you can have the camera close shutter at power off while in silent mode. From the sound of the discussion above I guess TN has totally missed this.

It seems obvious however that this setting is for people who quickly need to override all their noisy settings when they need to be quiet, for instance during press conferences, while shooting golf, for certain wildlife or whatever, and then go back to their normal preferred noisy mode when done. Now they can do that with one setting instead of digging up 4 separate settings (audio signals, aperture drive, shutter when power off and pixel remap at power off) at different places in the menus.

And again this thread is deteriorating into useless troll banter... and now we even have the usual sony fanboy-trolls join the bandwagon...
On one side we have @arbitrage@, who has proven already he's impartial to brands and who shot extensively with both cameras. On the other we have a guy who claims he knows it all via yt videos (and that he's paying to troll on this forum ) and shot only one camera...
I don't know if it's obvious only to me, but why even engage in this discussion?

I think we should move on to talk about the A1. I have a lot of respect for Pius, he is one heck of bird shooter. I have never shot the canon R5, I was salivating over it when it came out. I have been wanting a high resolution, high FPS body with super duper AF. Both the R5 and the A1 provide that. Based on what I read, I think it’s nitpicking to argue which one has better AF, sure , one may be slightly better than the other in certain AF applications. We are really arguing my Ferrari is better than your Limbo, with respect to the AF. The Sony can do some things the R5 can’t, like 30 FPS, flash sync, blackout free, better heat handling for video, etc. But is it $2600 better than the R5, probably not, not for MY usage ( birds, air shows, landscape) anyway. I do understand some of the A1’s features that the R5 doesn’t offer are a big deal for some users. I would say as a whole package, price aside, the A1 is a better camera. Mine should arrive in two weeks.

All true but also, who cares about this argument?

To the combatants (and I'm not including Geoff in those) - please stop.

Yes, you're right - you can enable closing of the shutter on power off in Silent Mode.
It's a bit tricky though, because for it to work you need to have closing of the shutter already enabled in non-Silent Mode ...

Yes, I know I'm contributing to this mess by posting messages about it (the same way people reply-all with "Please stop" to the massive email chains ), but it simply makes the thread difficult to read, regardless if you have the trolls hidden or not...

Just remember guys that Pius and I are actually friends and shooting buddies. He's mostly over here just to give me a hard time. Don't worry I'll give him a light next time I go out shooting with him

And trust me, I've talked him down from jumping ship over to Sony a couple of times now. He's always peaking over the fence to check out the grass on the other side.

Ok, I guess I missed that it's only friendly banter, but I'm afraid I was not the only one ...
Anyways, that was my last post on this topic, worst case I'll just stop reading this thread.

Hi Geoff, they are a sensitive lot over here in the Sony forum. I remember when you came over and kick the door down.. they came after you with knives and daggers man... lol.
But look at you now the adopted son that can do no wrong...
Well if I can convince myself or someone else can convince me that I can get better results from the
A1 than my R5, I'll be a permanent fixture over here. So grease up your ignore buttons...

Oh they are sensitive on all three of the main boards. With all the jumping around between systems I do I'm at the receiving end of it from all three whenever I switch to something else. Until I bought the R5 a few members of the Canon board literally told me I wasn't welcome to post over there anymore because I wasn't shooting Canon as my main system anymore. Even though I probably still owned more Canon gear and had shot more Canon frames than most of the guys complaining.

That same thing has now happened on the Nikon threads and it happened here when I started doing R5 vs A9 comparisons.

This is only a select few individuals on each board so I just accept that human nature and ignore it (for the most part). Just wait till I pick up the Z9....you'll see it play out like clockwork...I can guarantee it

It all depends on how you state it. Giving opinions based on experience is one thing. Formulating things without basis as fact, another. Afterwards one can always refer to sensitivity on the other side. That is too easy in my opinion.

Nice!

Sounds like the A1 has already had some tangible benefits to your workflow.

If you really want to go crazy. You can shoot in APS-C mode and sync at 1/500th of a second! 😉

Oh, and I agree. The mechanical shutter sounds crazy! It doesn’t sound like any shutter I’ve heard before.
