It seems the reviews have stopped.

I haven't seen any more samples/videos from Camera Labs and others who usually put out a bunch of samples. I've been waiting for Christopher Dodds to post on his blog too. He was suppose to release something this week.

Am I imagining this or is there something to this?

Let's hope you are just imagining it - what are the odds? /

They beat up on it pretty good comparing it to the r5, but that said 2 things I noticed, the winner of each test consistently had the better glass for the occasion. Canon 85 1.2 vs sony 1.4, Canon 70-200 iii vs sony v1, and then in sony's favor the 600gm+1.4x vs the Canon 800mm f10000 . They also seemed to always use tracking rather then zone and then complain about the small pickup point. Waiting for Mark continues.

As someone that hasn't really kept up to date with the a1 or this thread, this was pretty surprising. I wonder how much of it was the lens as they had mentioned. Looking forward to other comparisons.

Think we have to remember what T & C had to say about the R5 when they first tested it.
I think that a1 in the right hands will perform at top level...

This matters. Unfortunately, I think the GM 135mm is the best available at the moment if testing the speed of the A1.

I think we also have to remember that T & C continue to say that the A9II is not a good sports or wildlife body

Once again Tony says the A9 has too much lag to photography fast flying birds....I'm not sure if I can even bring myself to finish watching this video after hearing that line. The A9 IMHO has the least lag and is by far the easiest shooting experience for fast BIF compared to any camera I've ever owned which includes my R5. I guess on a positive note, is that Tony feels the A1 is better...heck I'd be happy with just the A9's EVF, but better is great

I love the lens release button position on Sony...that is actually one of my most favourite Sony things that isn't on Canon nor Nikon.

“But the emails...” = “But 30 fps at 50mp...” :-) (sorry, I couldn’t resist that joke given that Tony just kept coming back to the 30 fps argument in this “review”).

It is still too early make any informed judgement about the A1 and its performance. We need production copies with final firmware (even if the test units shipped with 1.0 fw). Plus RAWs cannot be processed in Lightroom yet. I know a lot of people are excited about this camera, and expectations are very high, but if we have learned something about gear so far it is that cameras are never as good as the manufacturer’s marketing department or sponsored spokesperson would like us to believe.

Video performance taken out of the equation, it seems like the Canon R5 (along with its RF glass) seems to be holding up rather well compared to the 40% more expensive Sony A1. More to follow.

I hope this means we will see some controlled comparisons with other Sony models for dynamic range. I would really like this to equal the A7R series. Any improvement will make things sweeter, but I haven't gotten that impression so far.

Watching a Northrup video is like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard. Nonetheless it seems like the R5's autofocus is a tad better at bird-eye detect/tracking but their tests seemed limited -- no BIF other than a crow that Tony decided to shoot at 1/250th of a second. Really?

Another point they didn't bring up nor test is rolling shutter in electronic mode. From what I have seen the R5 does have wing distortion with small birds with fast wingbeats. I'd really like to see the A1 tested at 1/32,000 sec. The A9 can freeze a hummingbird's wings with electronic shutter at that shutter speed. Hopefully the A1 with 50 Mp can do the same. That is amazing and Sony is the only one that can do that.

More tests please...

the r5 electronic shutter readout is atrocious. every pro sports photog i know thats tried it immediately switched back to their 1dxmk3. the r5 distorts footballs, soccer balls, and basketballs to a level where no editor will take it as a usable frame.

High shutter speed to minimize motion blur and fast ES curtains to minimize distortion (aka rolling shutter) are distinct effects. The ES curtain speeds on the A9 are fast and traverse the sensor in about 1/140 sec. The A1 promises to be even faster at 1/200 sec or a bit faster. Consequently distortion will be minimal. The R5 is approximately 1/50 to 1/60 sec so it will show quite a bit more distortion due to the much slower ES curtain speeds. See the following link for a discussion of ES artifacts. ES artifacts

I definitely agree about Sony's lens release button placement. It just felt awkward changing my R5's lenses.

I am very slightly concerned with the reports of eyelash AF of the a1. I wouldn't mind if only one person mentioned it, but I've seen it mentioned a couple of times, and Sony's own advert demonstrated eyelash AF

I've never had an issue with the lens placement buttons on either system. With Canon, I find it super easy to change lenses, as I activate the button with my kunckle as I grab the lens to twist it off....push in and twist in one motion. With Sony. I'd activate the button with my left hand from under the camera while the right hand took the lens off.

Agreed, loved it on Pentax and love it on Sony. Makes it easy to do the fast lens swap to minimize dust by holding one lens inverted in front of the other and flipping them 180. Though if you haven't done it before, I recommend trying it over a bed.

That said, I don't use teleconverters and can certainly understand how it could be an issue in the cold with gloves on, given how it inherently has to stick out beyond the body's depth.

I'm guessing it's impossible to move just the teleconverter lens release button to a different spot than the rest of the system. But maybe something like a lock would be nice.
