What I find is that doing a duotone or monochrome stuff only works some of the time. Some pics just look better in full colour than they would in a sephia or B&W. Blondes and people with dark hair (like Asian) people with fair coloured skin I find work best in B&W & duotone because of the contrast of their hair to the rest of their skin and/or the background

I like the Taxi club pic the best. The 2 girls in the last pic is also interesting though B&W probably suited there.

Off topic from this thread... anyone know what a film scanner adaptor on those normal flatbed scanners do? I want to scan all my old photos that my dad used to take before they all deteriorate... want to just dump them all in one hit and just scan the lot without much stress. Is that easily achieveable without spending an arm and a leg?

I am not sure, I think most flatbeds will allow you to scan six pictures at the same time. My film scanner only allows scanning of films one by one

Not sure either. I'm thinking about buying either the Canon 9950F or 8400F so that I can scan my medium format negs and trannies. Those two scanners have FARE (dust removal) which a normal scanner wouldn't do... at least, I think it's a hardware thing.

The dust removal function on my Minolta Scanner is a software thing I believe and I don't think it does a good job in picking up dust. All my trannies are also underexposed and in wrong colour tone. If I want to adjust each pic before I scan, it has to pre-scan and it's slow. And I have to do the frames one by one which is a bit of a hassle. But it's only AUD$5XX, what can I complain about?!

I've only got a lowly Canon N1220U scanner.... haven't used it as much as I want though... how much is it for people to scan a fair amount of negatives?

Thanks for the link Ed

Smelly, my lab charges me $10 for scanning a roll of 36 at the time of processing for some low-res scans

Vision Graphics charges approx $30 for same service but they give you 6.4MB files (if I remember correctly) - better buy a scanner and DIY

Hmm... better to buy then. It's only a once off. I don't intend to scan anymore film after I do it once though I have heaps to scan.

Just checked the Harris Technology web site.. the 8400F is only $469 (couldn't check at work.. nice blackout).. I presume you can do better but it's alright price. I'm not sure how many photos I've got scan though but my poor scanner I've barely used because I've never had to use it with the digicam.

High quality scans take an amazingly long time to do, so it doesn't surprise me that it costs so much. If you do it yourself you also have a greater degree of control over the results.

The canon 8400F costs around $450, equivalent to scanning 15 rolls at vision graphics. So I think it's worth it if you've got a lot of stuff to scan.

You could probably sell the scanner for a reasonable amount of money afterwards.

edit2: $435 at computer world. http://www.cworld.com.au/info.php?ID=116552

Where did you buy your X Drive, Smelly?

What other photo storage do you guys have and recommend?

Apart from the Epson P2000 of course, it seems like nobody has it in stock around the world

I have the compactdrive, but if I were to buy right now I think I'd get the x-drive 2160.

Also have a look at the x-drive vp6210

fairly cheap guy to buy from: http://www.powerinnumbers.com.au/

Well, it's photos of the family in the 70's and 80's as well as him when he went to Europe. Sadly, my dad isn't thrilled about photography at all though at least he doesn't steal my camera away! hahaha!

I definitely got more than 15 rolls.. at least got a bag full of slides as well to scan. I just didn't want to leave it by the side like I am with the N1220U now. It's light and portable. That's one up side.. but useless coz I haven't had the need to scan anything for years and years.

Don't buy the X-Drive... it's slow, slow and slow. Last maybe 6Gb copying which is why I made up this DIY power which consist of 8 AA batteries which extends the power to another 3 hrs... basically doubles it

Buy yourself a CompactDrive PD7X... runs off AA batteries and the fastest in the PSD market. It doesn't have the BS crap like MP3 player etc. A viewing screen is nice but you can go thru the files to look at the filesize etc but it's not an essential thing I feel.

I got it from powerinnumbers. Their service is good and heard good things about them.

I was thinking of getting a device to store images too, but i think its only use is for travel, at least for me anyway. 4Gb CF storage would be enough for most day trips?!?

I'm still not getting this colour space thing right, or maybe i'm just missing something. The following are 2 images resized with PS and microsoft picture viewer respectively, i'm seeing 2 very different colour profile on my lcd here at home. Are you guys seeing these 2 pictures exactly the same or differently?

Thanks for the link

The XDrive 6210 has two versions, the 4200RPM and 5400RPM, but hte price difference is only about $10. It looks pretty good, a 60GB unit costs $500, 40GB costs $450.

I am not too concern about its battery power if it lasts 3 hours because I've got about 4GB of CFs so I rarely need to download pic on the go
