p.1 #1 · fastest way to recharge R5 battery in mass

With my 5d4, I found a battery lasts all day. Same for 1D models. Carry one spare and good to go. Early reports are that the R5 will chew through two a day so carry two spares. Running two cameras, 4-6 batteries to charge each day. Any suggestions on how to rapidly charge that many with a light compact system suitable for air travel? Most chargers for two batteries seem to be usb charging one at a time. Probably workable if it charges while you sleep (I like to sleep 8 hrs) and you have a usb block with a whole bunch of outlets, 3 for canon batteries (assuming dual battery chargers), one for iphone, one for iwatch, one for ipad, one for inreach, one for..... you name it.

Here's one option:

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1678078

With the two devices mentioned (and product linked) in the above thread, if you have the grip, you can charge two batteries in the grip and two batteries in the Neewer charger, while having the light portability you need for travel.

Another option -- or in combination with the above -- is a portable PD charger like this one:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082PGS78L/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This option allows you to charge and shoot at the same time while connected to the camera via USB port. Don't know whether it does the same with two batteries in the grip -- I'll find out tomorrow when I'll have my hands on it -- but it certain does with the in body battery, according to an FM member, Bruce in Philly.

This has been sitting in my cart for some time. I like the compact charger size, but like most dual battery chargers it will probably charge one battery at a time. I doubt if there is a dual battery charger that quick charges both batteries simultaneously.

This one is interesting - charges 2 batteries in 4 hours:

Forget Wasabi. Go with the Neewer. Lasts longer and a nice fast safe charge. I've tried them both Neewer is the winner. And it charges BOTH batteries at the same time. Great job and they don't even get warm. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08LDM2H83/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8

As for dual charger, I have had this one by RavPower for some time, and it charges both LP-E6NH batteries in about 4 hours.

https://www.amazon.com/Updated-RAVPower-Rechargeable-Batteries-Compatible/dp/B07Z3NPFBD/ref=sr_1_3?crid=OZMP68T6KS3K&dchild=1&keywords=ravpower+rp-bc003&qid=1608573454&sprefix=ravpower+rp-bc003%2Caps%2C211&sr=8-3

I was intrigued by dcisive's reporting of the Neewer's LP-E6NH batteries, so I have the batteries and the charger ordered and due to arrive tomorrow. I'll see how this one goes.

My batteries used to be all Wasabi; they were all great when they made LP-E6's. Then, their quality went down with later series of batteries, so I lost all trust in their brand.

That's only a 10W charger, just like a bunch of branded chargers that are mostly the same.
I have well over a dozen LP-E6 chargers including 6-7 USB chargers. The fastest USB are those that accept a 9V-12V (QC 2.0/3.0 input or PD) for about 13-15 W max. charge, but then you need all the USB power for that. If you only charge after the batteries are about 50% (e.g., 5Ds/R users) the basic USB chargers are not too much slower.
However, the fastest and safest option is simply to use multiple Canon chargers on a mini power strip. I usually travel with 2-3 of them and a couple of USB as well.

Quite frankly, I'm a bit dubious of the claims. Micro USB is limited to 5v and 2.1A (10W) versus the more robust USB C PD which allows as much as 20 v at 5 A (100W). I'd be looking at chargers which accept USB C PD.

I don't think there are any USB-C PD chargers for the LP-E6 battery. The only way to use USB-C/PD is to plug directly into the camera.

You don't need anything like the full power of PD unless you are trying for an explosion.
QC 2.0/3.0 is enough if the dual charger can make use of it. Many PD PS are also QC, but not always due to the licensing fees.

Coupla issues with the external battery, the RavPower PD pack and using the USB C port on the R5/R6:

1 - The USB C port on the R5/R6 appears to be Power Delivery (PD) compliant. PD is a protocol that, according to Wikipedia: "USB Power Delivery introduces commands for altering a port's power or data role after the roles have been established when a connection is made." Both sides, the battery and the camera need to be PD to work. I have not hooked up a non-PD battery to the R5... so I have no idea if that would damage or even charge the internal battery. Further, the AC power adapter sold by Canon, the PD-E1 appears to be PD compliant by virtue of the model name... but that is my conjecture. See page 845 in the R5 manual "Using USB Power Adapter PD-E1, you can charge Battery Pack PL-E6NH or LP-E6N without removing it from the camera. The camera can also be powered."

2 - Canon does not officially support driving the camera by a battery... I called CPS and they said something like "we do no support third party stuff" or something like that... I don't blame them given the tons of crap out there. However, the camera does not know the power source, only the protocol and power delivered to it... and these capabilities are all purposefully engineered into the camera.

3 - If you connect a PD battery to this camera, the operation may or may not power the camera... it will, however charge the NH battery. The delivery capability of the PD battery determines the functional capabilities. Below a particular threshold of wattage (), the battery will only charge the battery..... above which the camera can be powered directly with no usage of the NH battery... this is cool. The PD battery in the link is strong enough to power the camera fine.

4 - The battery will either run the camera or charge but not both at the same time. The camera will only charge the NH battery when asleep or turned off.

5- The above PD battery will power the R5 forever. I shot for 7 hours with the camera on the whole time... I turned off all power saving functions so the camera was awake the whole time and the rear screen on the whole time... and burned less than 1/2 of that batteries capabilities. Unbelievable. This was my objective... NOT buy more expensive batteries... and shut down all that power saving crap that slows down activation... I found the auto focus system to take a moment to wake up and then a moment further to not be stupid. This is very important if a bird shoots out from a tree line.

6- For tripod use, I strap the battery on to the tripod or hang it by a velcro strap. For driving around a nature refuge, I plug the PD battery in with the camera next to me and off.. thus charging the internal battery. Unplug, lift the camera and start to shoot. It charges the NH battery at least as fast as it drains from use.

7- So far I did not find a need to buy a 2nd NH battery, nor a battery grip, nor any of the simulated NH internal batteries. None.

8 - That PD battery is less than $50. Yes, please re-read that.

PD battery: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082PGS78L/
Charger for PD battery: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PBCKZZ4/

9 - There is another option I have not tried, but may consider: Buying an NH battery charger with a USB port and a 2nd NH battery. So, in my bag, I could have this PD battery charging a 2nd NH battery. Then I can just flip NH batteries. But I haven't had a need for a 2nd NH battery yet... nor can I recommend such a charger but I see there are many of them on Amazon.

10 - I find the R5 ridiculously battery hungry. To be clear, I don't want any power saving modes turned on... I want this camera awake and at the ready as long as possible and I want the rear screen on (actually I want a firmware update to turn it off/on with the info button). I also find the battery grip and extra NH batteries too expensive and, frankly, unnecessary with this PD battery option.

Peace
Bruce in Philly

The R5 is only barely more battery hungry than the 5D4 IMO. I still pine for the days of the 5D3 battery life but not worth it for the poverty DR we got.

2 backups in the bag and you're fine. I'm popping 2 fresh ones in my grip for weddings and have yet to run dry when doing that.

Bruce, for mounting my Anker PD battery to my tripod I got one of these https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1499282-REG/uurig_1525_camera_bracket_clamp_holder.html

I have the ProMediaGear GKJr Katana gimbal which has a number of 1/4-20 threaded holes in it and was able to screw the clamp directly to it.

I read the thread which talks about powering directly from PD and bought a PD big enough with that in mind that as far as i can tell runs the camera and charges battery at same time but no guarantee.

My thinking now is to carry enough batteries to get through the day and solely charge at night when 110 available. Since I've got two bodies, that means 4 to 6 batteries. Two standard canon chargers work so when I get up at night to pee, I put in another set of batteries. Did it in africa by charging every time in camp, lunch, dinner, sleeping. It somewhat depends on whether you have 24hr 110. I've been places where you have no 110 (horse trips to wind river for example, raft grand canyon, grand stair case escalante drop camp) or for short periods (couple of hours), africa and yurt camp in Yellowstone. Short periods push for being able to charge multiple batteries at once. Horse trip or raft grand canyon, enough batteries to last whole trip. PD may be helpful for this for no 110 trips. Looked at solar and I'd rather just carry enough batteries.

Nice! I need to think about how to use this... I have a Wimberly so not so many options. I strap this either to the lens shoe which works nicely, or just hang it on the knob via these long velcro straps. I pasted loop velcro strips to each side of the PD battery so it is pretty versatile.

Having a bag of batteries can be expensive but you don't have to deal with a big PD battery brick. Something to consider is that these batteries be the new "NH" type or an aftermarket that fakes out the camera to be an "NH". If you don't, you may not get full frames per second (White H or H+ or flashing white).

Also something that bugged me about Canon's NH battery is that you loose frames per second when the charge drops below 60% per the manual. Others, Arbitrage, is finding this number is much lower with a new battery... but still, not acceptable to me.

I should have purchased a few of these units and sell them out in the field, or get a commission from the company. I think I have sold a few of these when R5 owners come up to me in the field asking me what it is.

If I were shooting in the field all day with a tripod, I'd go with Bruce's method of hooking up a RavPower to the camera and shoot away. Even then, I'd be very cautious about the constant use of the USB port, as I once damaged my former camera's USB hub while shooting tethered in my basement studio, this coming from a very careful guy.

Although in recent years, I've tried in every way to lose gear weight whenever possible, I don't mind the use of the grip. Even with the grip and the power saving modes on, however, you can go through the battery power rather quickly. So, my preferred method when out in the field is to have a two extra set of batteries, the RavPower PD charger and the Neewer dual battery charger (the Neewer LP-E6NH batteries that come with the charger sounds very promising, and I'll get to test them when they arrive tomorrow.) When I run out of battery power in my grip in the field, I swap with a new set of fresh batteries and charge the drained batteries from the grip in the Neewer charger. These can all fit nicely in my photographer's vest pockets, so I don't even need to carry a bag with me.

Everyone has a different shooting styles and preferred method of securing the battery power, and it's nice that there are various options to suit one's style.

It think people make a bigger issue out of the R5/6 battery consumption then it really is. I've been using the R5 for almost 5 months and have yet to need more than 2 batteries for a days shooting. The worst day was on a day where I had clicked over 3000 images and several minutes of 4k 120 video and 2 little batteries is all I needed. I had at least 4 more with me in my bag just in case, but that day's usage taught me what I can expect from then on.
And the best part was, my hair didn't catch on fire from shooting 4k /120 video on the original FW!

I'm a gadget geek just like the rest of you and may even pick up one of those power banks just for an OS factor someday for when I'm off the grid. But 99.9% of the time I have my truck nearby and I have a Canon charger permanently plugged in on my dash ready to go when ever I need.
I'm just not into having to remember to pack cables, straps, velcro, power banks, chargers and then having to strap this or Velcro that, then plugging this in then yank it out to go click on something bla bla bla....
I prefer a simple clean solution of one or two little batteries in my pocket or bag and call it a day. OR just get a grip and two extra bats. Those Neewer bat's look like the ticket from what some are reporting so far.
