Thanks!

My speculation that this could be a dumbed down version of the FE lens appears correct!

Only two APD elements in the M mount version and the hard infinity stop makes sense now.

Yes, there are less APD elements and the design is slightly different. (Probably to adjust for the sensor thickness)

In addition, the wide open performance of the Sony FE lens is much better than the M mount one (based on their MTF charts).

It does tighten up when stopped down.

Map Camera has the listing up:
https://www.mapcamera.com/item/4530076132474

115200 JPY including tax there. Exactly same price as E-mount version has now at Map Camera, but hood for VM version is sold separately at extra cost.

Cosina's official price is 120000 excluding tax == 132000 JPY including tax.

Nokishita's predicted price was 128000 JPY including tax.

Glad to see the round aperture opening at f/2.8 and f/5.6 is retained like in the Sony version.

Size is also very similar to the 50 Lux ASPH I currently use, which is welcome. I was concerned it might be a bit on the long side.

Sony version has round aperture only at f2 and f2.8 but the new VM version's aperture system seems to have been re-designed further to have circular aperture also at f5.6.

Much better, IMO, seems like an exaggeration. We are talking about 3 percent higher contrast at 30 and 40 cycles/mm. That small of a difference is going to be pretty hard to see even blown up to 100% magnification with a 40MP sensor, and that is just wide open performance. The MTF graph for this M mount version is still quite phenomenal.

And while we are talking about specs they got the lens to be a bit lighter and physically smaller than I expected. It is only a tiny bit larger than the Leica M 50 f/2 APO and quite competitive in size.

It needs f/5.6 to achieve what the Sony version does at f/2.8. A nice consolation factor to the Leica and other users.

Personally I prefer to have nice sunstars at stopped down apertures so not missing having a circular aperture at f5.6 with my E-mount version I guess the lighter weight is the main benefit with the VM version.

Does anyone know if the Leica 50 Cron APO ASPH can be set manually in any of the digital M camera menus? Given it's a recent lens that has only been available as 6-bit coded, I doubt it's in any of the menus. It's not a manually set lens code menu option in my M240.

The M10 doesn’t have the 50 APO listed in the menu but the SL2 has it, interestingly the M10 also lacks the 50 Summarit while the SL2 has both the 2.4 and 2.5 version listed. Some kind of memory optimization in the M10 perhaps?

I don't know whether this is dumbed down, or just an evolution of the optical design, and maybe adjustment for Leica M sensors.

Often, MTF charts do not take sensor thickness into consideration. So the real performance of these lenses with their respective sensors might be quite different from each other, and I'm not sure which one would be better in combination with the sensor it was built for.

I am sure there will be comparisons available soon to clear that doubt.

AFAIC, I am more than happy with my E mount version and Leica (and other mirrorless) users should be happy that there will be an affordable APO 50/2 (albeit without the stripes).

The additional photos on leica rumours site show the stripes..they are inside the rim of the lens.

I mostly agree with you but if it has nice sunstars at f/8 (we will have to see if that happens), then I won't mind having the round aperture shape at f/5.6. The round aperture at f/5.6 might come in handy sometimes and it would rarely be a problem stopping down to f/8 when I want sunstars.

Now I'm on board. Those coloured stripes mean that this lens will work with colour film!

Yes, there is also no 0.95 Noct in M10 but SL2 has it if you use OEM M to L adapter.

This is a great addition. circular bokeh at f2.8 and 5.6 is a selling point for me. Sharpness is not a concern at all especially for rangefinder use. APO M is my favorite in term of handling. Other than that, I don't see much point choose it over this one unless you just want something within Leica for M system. (I am)

Yes the 50AA will be a touch smaller and has the nicer Leica ergonomics, plus 6-bit coding. All very small differences, but that can be more pronounced in use. That said, for what likely will be a $5K+ price difference, I think I'll be getting the Voigtlander at some point instead of the Leica.

We'll have to wait for Fred to do a comparison (hint, hint ).

From the Cosina MTFs, it would seem the FE version's sagittal and tangential lines are closer wide open, which might mean the M version's rendering is slight less smooth. But I think it will be sharp enough wide open and for how I would use it, would likely be stopped down a bit anyway most of the time. At which point, based on the MTFs, it looks like both versions are very similar.

In any case, it seems there are some tradeoffs between the two versions. Perhaps the FE is a slightly better optical performer. But IMO the M version looks nicer and I appreciate the additional round aperture at f/5.6 because...

I agree with Steve and I'm one who actually does not like the super-pronounced sunstars typical in many Cosina designs, therefore I'm very glad that f/5.6 gives a stopped down option to reduce or completely eliminate them.

I haven't followed the specs of the FE version super closely and missed that it only had the round aperture shape at wide open and f/2.8. I'll take this adjustment/improvement to the M version's aperture design in exchange for the 'worse' wide open MTF performance.

Here are both MTF graphs for comparison: E mount and VM mount:

Very similar at f/4 but wide open, the E-mount performs slightly better at center while the VM seems to have a more consistent performance across the field. Perhaps we will see a tad more astigmatism and/or lateral CA on the VM mount as well. (sag and merid lines more separated)

Both great performers.
