@j4nu I don't have a hard time believing that actually. My 40 goes from usable/good at f2 to outstanding at f2.5 and beyond. Sharpens up oddly quick—but is frankly mediocre for the price wide open. Pretty much how the chart shows, honestly... with perhaps a bit flatter performance in terms of mid/edge resolution.

Maybe it's sample variation, my impression of Sigma f1.2 is that it's not that great off-axis and I considered the very center of Batis strong, maybe with some degradation close to MFD...

@j4nu I guess I was considering more the whole center third. I concede there is a small area of good resolution in the center wide open.

@Fred Miranda thanks for playing internet detective. Wish the review had more samples but the lens looks better all the time.

Another first look thingy I found. From Sigma blog so it's almost 100% marketing fluff, but decent sized sample images:

Ha, you weren't kidding....my personal favourite...

"But the real thrill of this lens was seeing how incredible the sharpness was. At F2 her eyes were both in focus and piercingly sharp, while the background dropped off to a beautiful, creamy blur. The rounded nine-blade diaphragm does an incredible job with bokeh."

He said that when describing the look of the lens at f/2 where, well, yeah...can we just all agree to never mention the affect the number of aperture blades has on the bokeh of a lens wide open? Maybe on the Batis 40...sorry, low blow ... and even then let's agree that it affects, primarily, the shape of specular highlights, but not necessarily the bokeh itself.

But the samples look very nice. This lens is getting better and better, IMO.

I'm not sure if you misread my comment, but I never stated that the Voigtländer is the sharpest 50mm in center at f/2 compared to other 50mm lenses in this aperture range. I'm sure we would even need sensors of higher resolution to determine the actual divergent between these lenses, as they are very close to, if not reaching the barrier of the Sony a7R IV's sensor. At least that would be necessary if one would want to inspect the absolute difference in potential, as we aren't sure if this is the actual limit of the potential of the given

You mentioned that you find differences in test results that both Marc and Fred have performed. But one major thing to consider is that Marc always seems to perform his sharpness tests close up, whereas the tests I've seen from Fred tend to always be at landscape distances (presumably infinity). Most lenses are optimized for shooting at different distances, so it's possible that the differences just come down to different design tradeoffs that manifest in different shooting scenarios.

Forgot to look last night, but they had another 'first look thingy' on the 65 at the same blog. Same marketing hype and sample images thing applies:

https://blog.sigmaphoto.com/2020/first-look-sigma-65mm-f2-dg-dn-contemporary-lens/

65 is shaping up to be a better/slightly longer version of the 55 ZA to my eyes, which is honestly pretty amazing. That lens is a classic to me, at least. Know it's not quite as good as the 50 planar, but the quality to size/weight it offers is simply unmatched in AF lenses that I can think of even today.

That s not true in my opinion. Have two Sigma 35/1.2 and they are very good off axis, too (of course not as good as n the center, no lens is).
lensrentals.com doesn't hint at an off-axis drop, too.

How did he measure that objectively? Sorry, but exclamations like this let me take a review not very seriously at all.

New 65mm review, says nothing new but some good samples:

Same thing could be said about his 35mm review, honestly. On his channel so just click to his playlist if you're interested.

The I-series looks more and more to be about as good as it's going to get if we're valuing form factor almost as much as IQ with interchangeable cameras. To be clear, if Sony ends up extending the 1.8 G-series I think those will be better lenses—but Sony is less willing to compromise on computer correctable aspects of IQ like Sigma is to keep the size down (though admittedly Sony might end up having a weight advantage due to their use of plastics in construction). The same thing could be said about Nikon's 1.8 S-line if not more so due to Nikon's engineers either not being able or not wanting to do the things Sony does to shave off size (see 20mm 1.8G vs 20mm 1.8S & 24mm 1.4GM vs 24mm 1.8S).

Know that an rx1r iii will certainly be an enticing offer, but from what we've seen so far would anyone choose that over an α7C + this 35/65 combo? The combo will have:
  1. Faster/Better AF (not unit-AF based)
  2. Stabilization (unless they alter the design to accommodate OIS... unlikely due to how impressively small the 35 Sonnar is)
  3. A weather resistant body (due to the lens lacking sealing I can't say blanket weather resistance, but at least your body should survive some stress—admittedly, this would also be the easiest improvement to make in an rx1r iii model... but who knows if they'll include it)
  4. Humongous battery advantage
  5. Ability to attach other lenses as needed

Be curious to get some opinions on this. Know the rx1 has devoted followers for a reason, but those are some compelling advantages and these I-series lenses look really good.

I'm not saying it's bad per se, but it never struck me as being as great as the charts make it be . Maybe I need a high res body or a better copy or try more landscape pictures with it ...

Yep, I'm not a fan of this approach either...

I agree. At infinity the Sigma 35/1.2 offers unchallenged performance "off-axis". There is no mid-zone dip which is very common with 35mm lenses.

Ok, I give up ... it's just that my experience matches that one test posted here, where Sigma was compared to the Tamron (Canon mount). I do admit though, I don't shoot stopped down with it much so I should probably try that more often.

I'm hoping the 35/2 DG DN offers similar performance. If it does, it will be an outstanding landscape lens.

Based on the reviews, so far, I'm thinking the 65mm f/2 might be the best of the three offerings although that may be unfair to the 24 f/3.5 that has yet to be reviewed at length. With AF and a smaller footprint, the Sigma 65 may give the CV 65 some competition, although one could argue that, other than common FL, same build quality, and some similar IQ characteristics, the lenses are geared to different purposes and different clientele.

35/2 and 65/2 should be getting released in Japan tomorrow and I should be receiving my 35/2 on release day. This time I ordered from Map Camera online store and it should arrive on release day before noon...

Also ordered the 35/2 DG DN T-Shirt (https://www.sigma-onlineshop.jp/shop/g/g938772/) and the lens cap holder from Sigma Online store Japan for fun and to try out how Sigma's online store works... The lenses are more expensive there than e.g. in Map Camera but these type of accessories / extras are only available from Sigma's own online store.

That's really cool!! I saw they also have one for the 24mm, as well as a cryptic "lens nerd" t-shirt which they're not going to show us until release time. May just have to order one, I feel very much kinship with Sigma and I'm proud to be one of the few (primarily) still photographers who uses the fp exclusively.

Looking forward to your samples as always - enjoy!!
