cameralabs did a comparison between the two.
GM is sharper, faster, lighter, with much less distorsion
Renderings are close, and cannot see a preference. just a bit different.
How is GM, a f/1.4 lens, faster than Sigma, a f/1.2 lens?
Rendering is subjective, but so far I haven't seen anything in Sony samples with the same wow factor of Sigma. I don't know if I would trust paid reviewers with clear bias towards Sony to make a decision. Let's wait until we see some sample here to crown the new 35 king.

Faster focusing?
Yes thank you, and sorry, I meant faster AF of course. In french faster means more rapid and for real translation of "faster" we say "plus lumineux" "more luminous" or something like that. And I often make the mistake ;-)

These are the same reviewers that tested the Sigma and gushed about that lens. So I guess we shouldn't have believed them then either?

It is your choice if you choose to believe them or not. I don't. They just talk about how awesome a new lens is. Unless there is a glaringly obvious issue, you won't hear about it from any of these reviewers in the launch videos. They want to make sure Sony, Sigma and other vendors keep sending them lenses in the future. It is just normal business.
You learn about the real issues and qualities of the lens from forums like this one. Again, don't take this personally. I got nothing against the GM. It is going to be a fantastic lens and if it is like Sigma 35/1.2 in rendering, it will for sure find its way in my camera bag.

I may come back with Sony FE system (or add to my current NIKON Z system) with a combo of A7c and 35mm 1.4GM. I liked 24 1.4GM a lot before I sold it and bought Nikon Z systems. I'm impressed by the size of this lens (compared with the old Zeiss version). Would love to compare this Sony GM 1.4 with my Nikon Z 35/1.8S.

The Sony MTF chart at f1.4 is already significantly better than the Nikon MTF chart at f1.8. So far, Sony is demonstrating that they are capable of producing lens equal to the wider mount lenses.

Maybe they're referring to the AF performance?

You really can't compare MTFs from different manufacturers like that. So much depends on the assumptions they are using to make the graphs. Let's wait until Lens Rentals do real MTF testing in the same set up, then we can really compare MTFs. That isn't to say the new 35 f/1.4 GM doesn't look sharp in testing so far. It does and I would not be surprised if when we get to real testing it does better than the Nikon 35 f/1.8S, but we can't know that from comparing manufacturer's MTF charts.

Not sure, whether this has been posted already, but the staff of Tokyo-based camera store MapCamera got to check out the lens. Their report complete with size comparisons can be found here.
At the bottom of the article, there is a comparison between the GM and the 35 ZA. They noted how the former was tack sharp wide open at the point of focus, while the latter had a glow to it.

I do have the sense that the 35 GM and 35ZA will be slightly different in their visual languages, but both very desirable. I can see keeping both. I have always liked the 35 ZA a lot and I find its rendering and handling of light and colors to be beautiful. Wide open, there is a gentleness to the image that still appears well-focused and clear, which I think is what the MapCamera reviewer you cite was picking up on.
In some ways, the 35 ZA reminds me z bit of the rendering and light-handling of the Canon EF 50 f1.2L, of which I am also a fan. I use the EF 50/1.2 on my Sony bodies with an adapter and have been very happy with the performance. I also use the Sony Zeiss 50mm/1.4 ZA, which has beautiful rendering and light-handling but has less SA and glow than the EF 50/1.2L.
I might even argue that as the 50 ZA is to the EF 50/1.2, so the 35 GM is to the 35 ZA .

What's a stop of light worth to you for increases in size and weight?
I have the 35/2.8 for traveling light and compact. Will likely get the 35/2 Sigma or the 35/1.4GM to really have a different lens from the 35/2.8.
Have the 35 2.8 for when I want ultra light. Looking at either Batis 40 or Sigma 2.0 for conditions where light is dim. There is a lens weight which becomes noticable when carrying all day...I think the 35 GM has crossed that threshold so I'll most likely not look at that lens.
To me, increasing ISO is one way to counter the extra stop of light...but there is no way to counter the extra weight.

This new GM looks to be a great lens, but is more than I want to spend as hobbyist.
I’m hopeful this release pushes Sigma to bring out a new DG DN 35mm 1.4 quickly. If it could have the same weight and size reduction like there is between the S85 and the 85 GM, that would be a dream.

I kinda think I will be. I’m usually a bang-for-buck bargain hunter but might need to shell out for this one as I shoot a lot of 35, yet my Samyang 35 1.4 is probably my most frustrating lens to use. It is optically competent for portraits, but it just misses focus a lot. The Sigma 1.2 is just massive, the Sigma 1.4 is arguably worse optically, and the Sony/Zeiss has a terrible reputation and major onion bokeh. I was kinda thinking about a 135 but I think this would be a better investment for the way I shoot most of the time.
