Loooooooove the size.
Interesting it doesn't have a concave front element like the, CV 351.7, ZM 35 1.4 and CV 35 1.2III, but follows the ZA 35/1.4 and Sigma 35/1.2.
Is that concave front element an RF things more at 35mm or this coincidence?
Also, it's entirely possible that Sigma 35/1.2 will weight 2x as much as this GM 35. If so Sigma fail, lol.
Like the GM 24, I suspect the GM 35 has a front convex XA element to suppress the color error and produce beautiful bokeh. As for the contrast between the Sigma and the Sony, different design goals I say. I don’t expect this Sony will be as sharp at the center or corners at WO, as flat field, as good at color correction, etc. and it’s a 1.4 lens as well. Still I’m glad Sony made these compromises to get the lens down to this size. This is something I will likely lug around everywhere instead of that Sigma behemoth. Canikon just trade blow with each other building the sharper lenses at bigger sizes and weights. Sharp lenses mean not much if I don’t bring them with me or the AF speed cannot keep up with what I shoot. I do hope Sony included dual XD linear motors in this one, and not like the GM24

I hereby eat my words about the size it was going to be. I’m amazed! Fred Miranda wrote:
It's very similar in size to the 24/1.4 GM. Only slightly longer.

I agree—I don’t think this will be better technically than the Sigma and I don’t want it to be. And I don’t want them to engage in the technical optical correction arms race. I am with you, let Nikon Canon and Sigma produce all the monster lenses—I am all about intelligent trade offs in favor of rendering and usability.
I have my fingers crossed that it will be extremely quick to auto focus with dual XD motors as well. And that the coma correction will be superb as well, I would love to use this for astro with stitching.

I'm guessing they'll keep the price at $1600 and bump the ZA pricing down to $1200 or $1300. I think the highest they can reasonably go for the GM is $1700, regardless of how good it is.
Totally agree with this analysis on price. I actually wrote something similar but realized I was just saying the same thing over again.

Well, I think for those of us who wanted a smaller lens this seems to clearly check that box.

One thing you do give up on these lenses is a lot of vignetting. The 24 1.4 GM is about 1/2 a stop slower than the Sigma 24 1.4 at 1.4 and 2 once you include the vignetting differences. The Sony 35 1.4 ZA is about a 1/2 stop slower than the Sigma 35 1.4 already. I can only assume the new lens will be equally as bad.
While I'm sure for most this doesn't matter, for Astro it does.

Damnit I just GAS'D on the sigma 24-70 dg dn This sounds exciting even tho I have the sigma 35 1.2. My only gripe with it is the flare. If this 35 does better in flare...I may consider it.

So far this appears to be exactly the lens I was hoping for! Can't wait to see what it is capable of producing. Small enough for street/travel, perfect for environmental portraits in or out of the studio. The 24 GM rendering was so good, people were using it as a 35 in crop as a substitute. May as well come close to copying that formula for 35 shooters. Like printing money, the demand is surely already there.

That size really is amazing! Instant buy (pre-order). My sharp, well centered copy of the 35 1.4 ZA will be up for sale soon, will keep the Sigma 35/2 at this FL until the GM ships. The Sigma will then be sold to a friend who still judges lenses by haptics, size, sharpness (but not rendering) 😅

Nice size!
For me it'll all come down to the bokeh rendering/transition zone. It would be great if it's like the 24GM, but seeing the awful rendering of the FE 35/1.8 (IMHO) I'm not sure about that yet.
This might be the lens that I've been waiting for ever since selling my RX1RII with the amazing 35/2 Sonnar.
We'll find out in a couple of hours when the first reviews will be online.

I'm kinda flabbergasted looking at that tiny thing, really. Like, I know the number and size of elements could make a difference, but uhhhhh that looks pretty on track to be under 500g to me. Maybe even close to like, 460ish. Damn.

Not sure why people are surprised by the size. Leica 35/1.4 FLE is the smallest modern Lux and it’s among the better Luxes. Well it’s just to say that Sigma CEO is full of it 🤣. Should take his marketing word as a grain of salt.
