Doesn't change the fact that the highest PDR is achieved by the old A7R .

nehemiahphoto wrote:
I was not looking at the overall PDR, but the max PDR which is more important to me but now I see what you mean as other might prefer higher PRD across the range. Either way, all excellent options.

If not for shutter shock and how poorly it plays with m lenses, that would be my body still!

Well, the A7R shows a maximum PDR that is maybe 1/20th of a stop better than the A7C at 50 ISO. That difference is certainly within measurement error.

But across the range of the most used ISO settings, the A7C has clearly superior PDR.

The graphs are clear, not sure what else our words can add .

Please pardon likely triviality of this—

Anyone bought a SmallRig cage for his/her A7C? If so, did you find, as I did, that it doesn't really fit perfectly; that the battery door won't open with the cage screwed on firmly?

Did you notice there seem to be a bunch of complaints about this door-fit issue on several sites?

All of us who still think it doesn't fit well are idiots! Including your humble narrator.

I had to look for a long time to understand how to make it fit perfectly—but then it does!

PM me, if you have the cage and it still won't fit. Your secret will be safe with me...

Congratulations to all you never- and former- idiots!

I have the SmallRig cage on the A7C.
Fit is just fine. Battery door opens a charm.
No problems with it at all.

Just finished remodeling our kitchen.
Chance to goof off with the Canon 8-15mm via the MC-11 adapter.

Just picked up the all black version with kit lens for an upcoming trip to Prague next week.
Not sure I'll take the kit lens, though it hardly takes up any space.
Wanted something smaller/lighter than my A7RIII and able to have different lenses unlike my RX1RII.
Traded in some un-used Nikkors and a Pany m43 fisheye that have not been used in a couple of years.

I'll get it out of the box tonight.

The viewfinder, though small, is totally serviceable for casual picture taking, just like the RX1RII is.

It kind of feels like an A7III and the RX1RII were melded together . . .

Question is... what's your lens kit with the small body?

John - when I take the A7C out I take the 28-60 even if it is not on the camera - it really is a handy little lens, has sometimes been on my RIV too. Freds review of it was very good. These were just test shots when I first got the 7C, most are with the 28-60 apart from a couple with Contax G45, one with the Cron 40mm and a couple with Tam 17-28

Enjoy yor trip

An example of what I'm planning on taking on an upcoming trip to Prague:

16/3.5 AI Nikkor
21/3.5 CV
40/2.5G
85/1.8

I may do this kit depending on how things pack:
16/3.5 AI Nikkor
20/1.8GM
40/2.5G
85/4 ZM

I expect that most of my pics will be with the 40/2.5G.

I would be very interested to hear your comparisons of shooting with the A7C and with Leica bodies (I am assuming M bodies). I have a long running debate with myself about whether the Leica bodies would feel different enough in a good way to justify getting into them. And how much I would miss modern camera tech with the Leica--AF, Eye-AF, tracking, IBIS. My applications for the Leica would be candid images of people, travel, landscapes while walking, and some scenes of interiors, buildings, or interesting objects and settings. So I would be interested in your take on comparisons

I was debating the same thing, and my primary focus is people (candid portraits) with a bit of travel/landscape. I was strongly considering a Leica M10-P or M10-R. I've been shooting for decades but never with a rangefinder. Been decades since I used manual focus only but was willing to consider it. The primary draw for me was the small lenses and body with great image quality. I have been agonizing over this for months and ultimately decided on an A7C last night as it was the smallest FF body.
The Leica's are beautifully made but totally anachronistic in today's world. The rangefinder patch is tiny and in only one place in the viewfinder, which is just ludicrous in an era when you can use focus peaking on an EVF and see the entire image and what's in focus if you are using manual focus lenses. IBIS is an incredible innovation. The Leica lenses and simplicity are nice but ultimately my decision was that I'd likely get more keepers with an A7C. I may get a Leica down the road but for the time being, a few small primes and an A7C will do great. Some of the lenses are a little too "digital" looking and sharp for my taste so I'll be adding diffusion filters (Tiffen Black ProMist and Moment Cinebloom) to them to take that edge off. The strong Eye AF performance of this makes it a no-brainer compared to an M10.

If you like candid portraits, Greg Williams is a brilliant photographer. Works with celebrities/etc mostly. He shoots with a Q2 but his run-and-gun candid style would translate perfectly to a compact setup like the A7C with a small lens. What did you end up deciding on?

I've been trying to figure out my travel kit as well since it almost always involves 10+miles hikes in mtns (with a daypack) and in-town (camera bag). I sold all my larger lens I used on the A7R3/4 and now have some light primes and zooms

CV15/4.5, FE20/1.8, 35i/2, 65i/2, Batis 135/2.8
Tamron 17-28/2.8, FE28-60, Sigma 28-70/2.8, Tamron 70-180/2.8

both kits meet my IQ and weight requirements (16 oz or less for <70mm)
zoom kit is all 67mm
been thinking about selling the 35i and 65i and replace with a 35GM and 85/1.8 for all 67mm prime kit

Despite my appreciation of why some people might want one, I have decided not to get a Leica. The power of eye-af and the visualization that is possible with EVF are too much to turn away from. Instead, I have been paying attention to making my Sony bodies' settings as quick to shoot as possible--not that a lot really need to be changed. I have been experimenting with mark galer's advice to turn off auto-exposure modes for street shooting and in many other situations (because as he says the auto exposure mode gets it wrong in so many situations) and to rely more on manual exposure, setting exposure for the ambient light where one is shooting. I have been happy with the results I am getting. Eye-af and a good evf do hit it out of the park. And, as you say, the manual focusing experience can be quite good with focus peaking and focus magnification, though I don't use manual lenses much. But I am enjoying setting the exposure manually.

I had an A7C before and liked it, but sold it because three bodies were too many. Iam probably going to add back an A7C for its size and discreetness now that traveling is becoming possible again, but I decided to wait to see what the A7IV brings, just in case there was something special.

I might eventually if the price of the A7C comes down enough. Also still need to hold one in person to see if I like the grip enough or if I'd be in a position where I'd need to add a grip attachment at which point the size advantage shrinks.

I’m curious about the same. I bought one sight unseen from a member here and figure if it doesn’t work out I can probably sell for a small loss, so about the same as renting in terms of money out of my pocket.

I think the A7C is one of the best-looking modern FF cameras and I just wish it had a few more of the features I would miss from the A7III (joystick, bigger EVF).
