Looks like a very clean copy. That white paint usually falls off if you just look at it too hard, so that one's obviously had a charmed life.
My 'new' 80-200mm has been well loved.
I was not looking for great cosmetics as my main worry was haze and fungus which is pretty common with older lenses.
Luckily my copy was in great condition and surprisingly well-centered. Hard to believe how fast it was delivered!
My 100/2 is coming next.

It's weird, but I am excited for you to get it. I remember when I loaned mine to Nehemiah while he was reviewing the 85's. I wanted confirmation of my own experiences, and to finally know I wasn't overly fond of a lens with a fairly odd focal length for portraits. It's weird, but it's reassuring when others whose opinions I respect like this lens. Here's to hoping!

I would not recommend the (Haoge) adapter. It is not ribbed internally, and has the exposed chrome aperture lever. Sure to cause ghosting/flaring.
I really dislike this adapter. The ring is a bit loose and it's super ugly. However it does the job of testing the lenses before the real thing arrives.

I've seen many samples here and others sites and really like the look. Can't wait to try it out. Thanks for you and Nehemiah for suggesting it.

I just hope the support for screw drive lenses would come soon for a9.
Main reason being, I finally pulled the trigger on a 85 ltd. I wanted one all the way back when I got my A7, and whenever I thought about buying, I just tell myself, it’s more of a collector piece and how bad la-ea4 worked.
So, come on Sony, I’m not changing camera so I can af this lens!

I was in a similar situation to you—I had known about it for years and seen photos and had shot most other nice a-mount gear, but had not picked up the 100 until Emyrs kindly loaned me his.

I don’t think Sony will back support the a7ii generation, but I bet they FW the a7iii/a9/a7riii
And congrats on the 85 ltd—make sure to post some photos for us!

I think it will do fine for af-s and eye detect on the a7III. It looks like it is only for tracking. And there isn't an 85 or 100 Minolta I would use for tracking. The 80-200 or 200, sure. But I don't think tracking would come into play for me.

Yeah, I don't think there's any hardware limitation other than software needed (firmware) that opens up the support. I mean, at the very least, the A9II should be just as capable as the RIV.
I have the EA5 on pre-order. Will post back once I have that. No plan for now to buy a dumb adapter for it.

For those interested. I've ordered a Minolta 1.4x teleconverter (version 1 which is optically the same as version 2) and can post crops with the 1.4x + Minolta 200 2.8 making the Minolta a compact 280/4.
I've heard the 1.4x converter doesn't take much off IQ wise, maybe adds a little CA, so we'll see.

Are teleconverters supported by the LA-EA5 adapter?

I don't think anyone knows. There are a confusing multitude of compatibilities with SSM versus screw-driven with different LAEA adapters with varying AF abilities (from not at all to works fine) and third party TC's versus Sony's own versus Minolta's.
Honestly, it's a mess. I am hoping it works, but we'll see.

I hope it does. I'm glad you got one to test with the 200/2.8 + LA-EA5.

They haven't said anything about TC support. Hopefully they're either supported or, like with the MC-11, aren't officially supported but the adapter doesn't do anything to stop the function with some lenses (my APO DG 1.4x works with the 180/2.8).

Yeah, I believe this is Sony saying goodbye to a-mount cameras, so I'd hope for full support. I think they go the non-official route, so when we have a million idiosyncratic compatibility issues Sony isn't responsible. But hopefully the simple stuff, like this, works.
